distributed video coding (DVC) is a new compression paradigm in video coding, which is receiving lots of interests nowadays. Side information creation is a key function in the DVC decoder, and plays a key-role in determining the performance of the codec. This paper proposes a novel framework to create side information at the block level with two modes: Wyner-Ziv mode and Intra/ WZ mode, corresponding to Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation and motion compensated quality enhancement technique, respectively. While in the second mode, a low quality Intra block sent by the encoder is used to generate side information by doing motion estimation with the help of the reference frames. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve up to 2.1dB improvement in rate-distortion performance when compared to state-of-the-art DVC codec, especially for high motion video sequences and long group of pictures sizes.

In this paper, we propose a suite of efficient schemes for the representation of spatial and temporal correlations of video signals in distributed video coding (DVC). These schemes consist of zero motion skipping, Gray codes, and sign bits coding of DCT coefficients developed to improve the overall rate-distortion (R-D) performance of distributed video coding. Existing schemes have focused on exploiting the spatial and temporal correlation without sufficient investigation on the efficient representation of the correlation. We believe this is one of the reasons that there still exists sub-stantial gap between current DVC and traditional hybrid video coding. In traditional hybrid coding, a suite of efficient representation schemes such as zig-zag scan, run length code, and skipped macroblock have contributed significantly to excellent R-D performance. The efficient representation schemes we developed for DVC in this research will also lead to improved rate-distortion performance comparing with existing DVC schemes. We present in this paper the overall framework for the proposed zero motion skip and the analysis for efficient representations of both DCT coefficients and their signs. The experiment results show that the distributed video coding based on these efficient representations is able to achieve considerably improved rate-distortion performance over existing schemes.

distributed coding is a new paradigm for video compression based on Slepian-Wolf (1973) and Wyner-Ziv (1976) theorems. In this paper, we propose a new pixel-domain distributed video coding (DVC) scheme, in which both the temporal and the spatial correlations are exploited only at the decoder. A joint source-channel decoding is implemented to exploit the source statistics. Iterations between the Map channel decoder and the BCJR source decoder are made to improve the global decoder performance. Simulations results show that a gain is obtained, in term of rate, with iterative joint source-channel decoding, compared to the basic decoding.

A distributed video coding (DVC) system based on wavelet transform and set partition coding (SPC) is presented in this paper. Conventionally the significance map (sig-map) of SPC is not conducive to Slepian-Wolf (SW) coding, because of the difficulty of generating a side information sig-map and the sensitivity to decoding errors. The proposed DVC system utilizes a higher structured significance map, named progressive significance map (prog-sig-map), which structures the significance information into two parts: a high-level summation significance map (sum-sig-map) and a low-level complementary significance map (comp-sig-map). This prog-sig-map alleviates the above difficulties and thus makes part of the prog-sig-map (specifically, the fixed-length-coded comp-sig-map) suitable for SW coding. Simulation results are provided showing the improved rate-distortion performance of the DVC system even with a simple system configuration.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a new video coding paradigm which mainly, exploits the source statistics at the decoder based oil the availability of some decoder side information. The quality of the side information has a major impact oil the DVC Rate-Distortion (RD) performance in the same way the quality of the predictions had a major impact in predictive video coding. In this paper, a DVC solution exploiting multiple side information is proposed;the multiple side information is generated by frame interpolation and frame extrapolation targeting to improve the side information of a single estimation mode. Compared with the best available single side information solutions, the proposed DVC solution with multiple side information robustly improves the RD performance for the set of test sequences.

The research on distributed video coding (DVC) has been increasingly popular in recent times due to its promising features. Primarily it modifies the complexity balance between the encoder and decoder in the traditional video coding architecture. In this paper, we present a novel architecture for the DVC codec: involving a pixel interleaver/de-interleaver stage. This modification enables the exploitation of the unequal distribution of motion levels on the frame to improve the perceptual video quality at the receiver. This modified codec architecture does not involve a reverse channel and hence is suitable for applications with unidirectional channels and also for video storage based applications. The simulation results show a PSNR gain of up to 12dB compared to a DVC codec not involving pixel interleaver function.

After the great success of the predictive video coding approach, which led to a number of largely deployed MPEG and ITU-T standards, the video coding research community has been working on a new video coding paradigm, so-called distributed video coding (DVC), which is based on some Information Theory results from the 70s: the Slepian-Wolf and the Wyner-Ziv theorems. The first practical solutions have emerged around 2002 at the Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. This talk will address the basics, main solutions and trends on distributed video coding with especial emphasis on the Stanford DVC codec which has deserved a larger research investment. The rate-distortion (RD) performance of a state-of-the-art Stanford based DVC codec will be presented and benchmarked by the relevant alternative standard based video coding solutions. Finally, some trends on the DVC research will be discussed.

In conventional video coding systems, the encoder performs predictive coding (motion estimation) to exploit the temporal similarity, which make its complexity much higher than that of the decoder. The Wyner-Ziv theory or Lossy distributed coding theory suggests that when frames are separately encoded but jointly decoded, similar coding efficiency could be achieved. Trellis coded quantization (TCQ) is a powerful quantization method which has already shown its power in distributed source coding area. Recently, some applicable Wyner-Ziv video coding systems have been proposed. In this paper, based on the PRISM system, TCQ is employed to improve the performance. In order to minimize the complexity increase, only 4-state trellis is used, and no codebook is trained or stored, and we also propose a method to solve the refinement problem. Some other changes are also made to further improve the performance. Experimental results indicate that though the simplest TCQ is used, gain is also achieved over scalar quantization(1).

Compressed Sensing (CS) is a new approach to signal acquisition that can potentially allow us to design very simple video encoders that can be implemented on mobile devices with limited resources. However, previously proposed CS based video codec either require a conventional video codec or a feedback channel for effective operation, thus increasing the complexity. In this paper, a distributed Compressed video Sensing codec is proposed that only makes use of CS at the encoder. A novel Side Information generation scheme is incorporated in the decoder which exploits the correlation between CS measurements of nearby frames. It is much simpler than other schemes found in the literature and yet effective. Simulation results demonstrate that effective video coding can be achieved using this codec.

This letter proposes a distributed video coding (DVC) scheme based on the human visual system (HVS). As we know, HVS can seldom sense any changes below the just-noticeable-difference (JND) distortion threshold due to its underlying sensitivity and masking property. Therefore, the un-noticeable signal differences between the original frame and side information need not to be corrected in DVC. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can save the bits-rates significantly without degrading the subjective quality of the reconstructed frames. © 2009, IEEE.
