Wyner-Ziv video coders perform simple intra-frame encoding and complex inter-frame decoding. This feature makes this type of coder suitable for applications that require low-complexity encoders. videocoding algorithms provide coding modes and parameters so that encoders can fulfill rate constraints and improve the coding efficiency. However, in most Wyner-Ziv video coders, no algorithm is used to optimally choose the coding modes and parameters. In this paper, we present a rate control algorithm for pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv video coders. Our algorithm predicts the rate and distortion of each video frame as a function of the coding mode and the quantization parameter. In this way, our algorithm can properly select the best mode and quantization for each video frame. We show experimentally that, even though the rate and distortion cannot be accurately predicted in Wyner-Ziv video encoders, rate constraints are approximately fulfilled and good coding efficiency is obtained by using our algorithm.

Over the past few decades, distributed video coding (DVC) has been considered as a compression paradigm suitable for applications which require simple encoding. Yet, the performance obtained with practical architectures is still far from the theoretical bound, mainly due to the inaccurate Side Information (SI) predicted at the decoder. The work presented in this paper tries to improve the correlation between the bit-planes of the SI and the corresponding bit-planes of the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frame. The proposed algorithm uses the adjacent key frames to predict the quantization intervals for the SI and for the WZ frame. It then chooses whether the quantization module should use the floor or the ceiling operation such that the indices generated for the two frames differ by the smallest number of bits possible. Experimental results show that, for a given target quality, the proposed method can reduce the WZ bit-rate by up to 8.4% compared to the traditional coding schemes.

This paper proposes a novel framework called distributed Compressed video Sensing (DISCOS) - a solution for distributed video coding (DVC) based on the Compressed Sensing (CS) theory. The DISCOS framework compressively samples each video frame independently at the encoder and recovers video frames jointly at the decoder by exploiting an interframe sparsity model and by performing sparse recovery with side information. Simulation results show that DISCOS significantly outperforms the baseline CS-based scheme of intraframe-coding and intraframe-decoding. Moreover, our DISCOS framework can perform most encoding operations in the analog domain with very low-complexity. This makes DISCOS a promising candidate for real-time, practical applications where the analog to digital conversion is expensive, e.g., in Terahertz imaging.

We consider the problem of video compression with free viewpoint interactivity. It is well believed that allowing the user to choose its view will incur some loss in terms of compression efficiency. Here we derive the complete rate-storage region for universal lossless coding under the constraint of choosing the view at the receiver. This leads to a counterintuitive result: freely choosing its view at the receiver incurs a loss in terms of storage only and not in the transmission rate. The gain of the optimal scheme with respect to interactive schemes proposed so far is derived and a practical scheme that achieves this gain is proposed.

Today's the paradigm for video compression has been significant development represented by the emergence of an important number of international standards efforts of ITU-TVCEG and ISO-IEC MPEG. The main objective of the current systems (such as the standards of MPEG-X and H-E6X) is to compress the original information in order to reduce the transmission rate. These tools generate encoders whose complexity is generally higher (5-10 times) than the decoder. This difference is related to the fact that the power estimation and motion compensation are calculated and made at the encoder while the decoder will simply use the motion vectors to reconstruct the decoded frame. However, in recent years, with emerging applications such as multimedia sensor networks and wireless low-power surveillance, the traditional videocoding architecture is being challenged. In fact, in these applications where low-power and low-complexity encoder device is essential, new types of coding algorithms have to be proposed. In this context, we propose a transform-domain videocoding scheme which fits well in these senarios. In this system, both the arithmetic and turbo codes are used to encode the video sequence's frames. Simulations results show significant gains over DCT-based Wyner-Ziv video coder.

In this paper, a bandwidth efficient error resilience scheme aiming to protect region of interest (ROI) in frame based on Wyner-Ziv(WZ) coding for wavelet based video transmission is proposed. By utilizing additional WZ coding, all the corresponding wavelet coefficients related to ROI will be specially protected during transmission on error prone channel and eventually ROI area can be better reconstructed. Comparing to FEC algorithm fully applied to all wavelet coefficients to realize protection, the proposed scheme has distinct advantages in saving bandwidth and robust transmission.

A novel multi-view camera system based on distributed video coding (DVC) scheme is described in this paper. Unlike other systems that use camera arrays, the proposed system consists of multiple uncalibrated and vastly different still-image cameras. The relative positions and viewing angles of these uncalibrated cameras are not known a-priori. Images captured by these cameras are first registered using sparse, low level image features. Inter-view correlation is then exploited iteratively using a DVC scheme. Our results demonstrated that it is feasible to generate high-quality multi-view images from different and uncalibrated cameras based on DVC methods.

This paper focuses on side information (SI) refinement in Wyner-Ziv videocoding and proposes to exploit the intrinsic property of channel coding for improving the joint decoding performance. In this paper, we propose to use syndrome and information bits from the encoder to help the decoder in refining the SI. We use extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis to deduce the mutual information variation in LDPC iterative decoding during the SI refinement process. The objective is to obtain the same decoding quality under lower coding rates. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

The coding efficiency of Wyner-Ziv frames relies considerably on the quality of side information and the capability to model the statistical dependency between the original frame and side information. In the field of distributed multi-view videocoding. (DMVC), there are two kinds of side information, namely temporal side information (TSI), which is generated by exploiting the temporal correlation, and inter-view side information (IVSI), which is generated by exploiting the inter-view correlation. This paper proposes a new fusion method to get better side information by the region-based combination of TSI and IVSI. Besides, an improved statistical model of "correlation channel" is proposed to estimate the statistical dependency between the original frame and side information at the decoder. We call it Region-based Correlation Channel Model (RCCM). The RCCM models the "correlation channel" between original frame and side information At a fine granularity level by detecting the spatial quality variation of side information within each Wyner-Ziv frame. Experimental. results demonstrate that the RCCM can more accurately model the "correlation channel" between the original frame and side information and thus, less bits are required for decoding a Wyner-Ziv frame.
