distributed video coding (DVC) is a coding paradigm where video statistics are exploited, partially or totally, at the decoder. The performance of such a codec depends on the accuracy of the soft-input information estimated at the decoder, which is affected by the quality of the side information (SI) and the dependency model. This paper studies the discrepancies between the bit planes of the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frames and the corresponding bit planes of the SI. The relationship between these discrepancies is then exploited to predict the locations where the bit plane of the SI is expected to differ from that of the original WZ frame. This information is then used to derive more accurate soft-input values that achieve better compression efficiencies. Simulation results demonstrate that a WZ bit-rate reduction of 9.4% is achieved for a given video quality.

The Laplacian model is the standard distribution for correlation noise estimation at the turbodecoder in Wyner-Ziv coding schemes. In practice, this hypothesis is not always satisfied and, regularly, the estimated model sensibly differs from the error distribution. In this work, we prove that using a model better fitted to the true distribution improves the performances, and we thus propose to use the more general exponential power distribution (EPD) which has never been tested in a distributed video coding context. Gains in rate-distortion over the Laplacian model are illustrated by results on several video sequences, showing that the EPD model outperforms the Laplacian one in off-line (oracle) as well as in on-line (practical implementation) modes. These results also indicate that, in some cases, the online EPD model reduces the bitrate even over the off-line Laplacian model.

Wyner-Ziv video coding is a new video compression paradigm based on distributed source coding theory of Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv. Wyner-Ziv coding enables light-encoder/heavy-decoder structure by shifting complex modules including motion estimation and compensation task to the decoder. Instead of performing the complicated motion estimation process in the encoder, the Wyner-Ziv decoder performs the motion estimation for the generation of side information in order to make the predicted signal of the Wyner-Ziv frame. The efficiency of side information generation deeply affects the overall coding performance, since the bit-rates of the Wyner-Ziv coding is directly dependent on side information. In this paper, an improved side information generation method using field coding is proposed. In the proposed method, top fields are coded with the existing SI generation method and bottom fields are coded with new SI generation method using the information of the top fields. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves the quality of the side information and rate-distortion performance compared to the conventional method.

distributed video coding is a new video coding paradigim, with the ability to shift coding complexity from encoder to decoder. Turbo code based pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv codec is one of the most practical lossy DVC schemes. The performance of Wyner-Ziv codec significantly depends on the modeling of correlation noise statistics between the side information and the original Wyner-Ziv frames. It was observed that the correlation noise statistics differs temporally and spatially. In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to model the non-stationary col-relation noise statistics. The experiments show that the proposed algorithm has led to significant improvement for Wyner-Ziv coding performance.

We consider the design of a low-complexity video encoder in a scenario where an unconstrained receiver can help the encoder reduce complexity by exploiting feedback. To aid us in making design choices, we propose a simple model for video data that captures key properties of the temporal correlation between video frames and the predictability of motion vectors. Our analysis identifies the strengths and weaknesses of previous approaches and motivates a hybrid approach in which the decoder sends motion information to reduce motion estimation workload, the encoder uses incremental distributed source coding on the blocks with poor motion estimates, and the decoder performs decoder motion search and requests additional bits when necessary. Under the model, our analysis shows that such a hybrid scheme outperforms prior approaches. Experimental results of comparable implementations indicate that the hybrid scheme, while not fully implemented, is very promising in practice.

distributed video coding (DVC) is very different from traditional video coding structures due to its property of simple encoder and complex decoder. The generation of side information is a crucial part of DVC and has been attracting much attention, but research on the reconstruction also important for DVC is just a little. In current work, we propose a variable reconstruction scheme (VRS) by exploiting side information and the turbo decoded quantization bin efficiently. Simulation results demonstrate that the VRS gains up to 0.85dB compared with the commonly used reconstruction scheme at the same bit rates and similar computation cost.

distributed video coding (DVC) has become increasingly popular in recent times among the researchers in video coding due to its attractive and promising features. DVC primarily has a modified complexity balance between the encoder and decoder, in contrast to conventional video codecs. Side information generation, carried out at the decoder, is a major function in the DVC coding algorithm and plays a key-role in determining the performance of the codec. In this paper, a novel enhanced algorithm is proposed for the side information generation process where the side information is evolved over the processing of each bit plane. Simulation results of the proposed technique depict a consistent improvement in performance in comparison to the state-of-the-art in pixel domain DVC.

In order to improve the quality of the reconstructed Wyner-Ziv frame, based on the introduction of a basic way to generate the side information, two strategies was proposed to optimize the side information. Firstly, during the unidirectional motion estimation process, we made full use of intra-correlation and inter-frame correlation to adaptively obtain the motion search starting coordinates of the current macro-block and the size of the search window. After the bidirectional motion estimation, a motion vector smoothing method was introduced to optimize the reconstruction of the motion vector field, and to further enhance the authenticity of the motion vectors. Compared with the existing conventional interpolation algorithm, the experimental results show that the average PSNR of side information generated by the proposed method can be improved by 1.33 similar to 1.66dB, and the subjective quality of the side information is significantly improved.

This paper presents a parallel Linear Hashtable Motion Estimation Algorithm (LHMEA). Most parallel video compression algorithms focus on Group of Picture (GOP). Based on LHMEA we proposed earlier [1][2], we developed a parallel motion estimation algorithm focus inside of frame. We divide each reference frames into equally sized regions. These regions are going to be processed in parallel to increase the encoding speed significantly. The theory and practice speed up of parallel LHMEA according to the number of PCs in the cluster are compared and discussed. Motion Vectors (MV) are generated from the first-pass LHMEA and used as predictors for second-pass Hexagonal Search (HEXBS) motion estimation, which only searches a small number of Macroblocks (MBs). We evaluated distributed parallel implementation of LHMEA of TPA for real time video compression.
