Motion estimation has been shifted from encoder to the decoder in distributed video coding (DVC). In this paper, a simplified skip mode is introduced in the WZ (Wyner-Ziv) frame coding process. In the proposed scheme, a skip mode decision process is performed to determine whether to apply skip mode to the blocks with low motion first. With the skip-mode, the block is reconstructed from the side information in the decoder without any encoding bits. In addition, the non-skip mode blocks are divided into two parts by motion activity. The encoding bitplane is extracted within each set and encoded independently. Simulations show the proposed scheme can achieve up to 54.29% bitrate savings Without visible PSNR sacrifice

Substantial rate-distortion (RD) gains have been achieved in video coding standards by increasing the encoder complexity while maintaining the decoder complexity the lowest possible. On the other hand, the alternative distributed video coding (DVC) approach proposes to exploit the video redundancy mostly at the decoder side, keeping the encoder as simple as possible. One of the most characteristic DVC tools is the statistical reconstruction of the DCT coefficients, which plays a similar role to the inverse scalar quantization (ISQ) in predictive codecs. The main objective of this paper is to propose a statistical reconstruction approach for predictive coding (notably the H.264/AVC standard) as a substitute to ISQ, thus creating a coding architecture with a mix of predictive and distributed coding tools. Experimental results show that the proposed statistical reconstruction solution allows achieving Bjontegaard bitrate savings up to 2.4% regarding the ISQ based H.264/AVC High profile codec.

Correlation Noise Modeling (CNM) is a key factor to influence the performance of distributed video coding (DVC). In most current CNM solutions, the distribution parameter is estimated based on the motion compensated residual frames and kept constant during the decoding process. A progressive correlation noise refinement method is proposed in this paper for transform domain Wyner-Ziv video coding to model the correlation noise more accurately, in which the estimated correlation noise is refined by using previously decoded bitplanes and quantization errors as bitplane decoding proceeds. The experimental results show that our proposed correlation noise refinement method could provide considerable bitrate savings and PSNR gains for transform domain Wyner-Ziv video coding system.

Source coding by exploiting the temporal and spatial correlations in an input video stream is well established in conventional video coding. However, when distributed video coding (DVC) is concerned, shifting the source coding from the encoder to the decoder made this a more complicated and possibly a sub optimal process. Exploiting the temporal correlations has so far been attempted utilizing the key frames, by motion compensation using the interpolated (or extrapolated) motion field. However, exploiting the spatial correlations within the DVC framework is still an unsolved problem. In this paper, we propose to exploit both spatial and temporal correlations to generate the side information at the decoder. The proposed architecture involves a bit plane level side information refinement mechanism extracting both temporal and spatial information available at the decoder. Simulation results show that, the proposed coding scheme can achieve about 40% bit rate saving over 3D refinement algorithm proposed in [1] which is utilized as the basis for implementing the proposed technique.

In this paper, we propose a region-adaptive quantization scheme and progressive side information/channel noise modeling for Wyner-Ziv video coding. The proposed region-adaptive quantization scheme can enhance coding performance and provide an additional functionality of region of interest (ROI) coding. It also improves the accuracy of channel noise modeling by using previously decoded bit-plane information. Simulation results show that the proposed region-adaptive quantization scheme is especially suitable for static sequences, and the progressive side information/channel noise modeling works well in dynamic scenes.

Recently, distributed video coding (DVC) has been actively studied as a solution to the growing demands on light video encoder. However, DVC shifts the complexity from the encoder to the decoder side, and in some applications it needs unacceptably long decoding time and/or big computing power. In this paper, we propose a Wyner-Ziv (WZ) video coding which extracts fast moving regions called Region-Of-Interest (ROI) and compresses them with a Low-Density Parity-Check Accumulate (LDPCA) code. By encoding only ROI, on the one hand, we can have significant complexity reduction both in the decoder and encoder. On the other hand, we can achieve better video compression performance. We confirm our claims by comparing Rate-Distortion (RD) performance of the proposed scheme with that of DISCOVER. Our experiments show that the proposed scheme outperforms DISCOVER by PSNRs of 1.87dB and 0.46dB for Salesman and Mother sequences, respectively.

Three dimensional digital video services are gathering a lot of attention in recent years, thanks to the introduction of new and efficient acquisition and rendering devices. In particular, 3D video is often represented by a single view and a so called depth map, which gives information about the distance between the point of view and the objects. This representation can be extended to multiple views, each with its own depth map. Efficient compression of this kind of data is of course a very important topic in sight of a massive deployment of services such as 3D-TV and FTV (free viewpoint TV). In this paper we consider the application of distributed coding techniques to the coding of depth maps, in order to reduce the complexity of single view or multi view encoders and to enhance interactive multiview video streaming. We start from state-of-the-art distributed video coding techniques and we improve them by using high order motion interpolation and by exploiting texture motion information to encode the depth maps. The experiments reported here show that the proposed method achieves a rate reduction up to 11.06% compared to state-of-the-art distributed video coding technique.

Side information has a strong impact on the performance of distributed video coding. Commonly, side information is generated using motion compensated temporal interpolation. In this paper, we propose a new method for the fusion of global and local side information using Support Vector Machine. The global side information is generated at the decoder using global motion parameters estimated at the encoder using the Scale-Invariant Feature Transform. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can achieve a PSNR improvement of up to 1.7 dB for a GOP size of 2 and up to 3.78 dB for larger GOP sizes, with respect to the reference DISCOVER codec.

In this paper the problem of correlation noise modeling (CNM) for Transform Domain Wyner-Ziv (TDWZ) video coding is considered. The CNM algorithm from DISCOVER codec is analyzed. An extended set of assumptions about correlation noise in transform domain is considered and a new CNM algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm is a generalization of the reference one for the case of non-stationary noise. The evaluation results show that the proposed method demonstrates higher performance than the state-of-the-art approach on test video sequences with complex motion.

In a distributed video coding (DVC) system, the total bit-rate depends on bit-rate of the key frames (Intra frames) and the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frames. The key frames bit-rate is relatively easy to control since they are encoded with an Intra coding scheme (e. g. H.264/AVC Intra), and there are many proposed solutions in literature which address this issue(1, 2). On the other hand, rate control (RC) of the WZ frames at the encoder is more difficult since the bit-rate of WZ frames is difficult to predict and control due to the absence of the side information at the decoder side. In this work, an RC algorithm developed within the VISNET II, the European Network of Excellence, is presented as an efficient solution to achieve and maintain the target bit-rate for the overall Intra frames and WZ bitstream, mainly by changing the degree of compression of the Intra frames which is controlled by quantization parameter (QP). In order to maintain a similar quality for the Intra and WZ frames, the WZ quantization index (Q(Index)) follows the QP changes. A statistical model is used to describe the relationship between Q(Index) and the WZ frames bit-rate. Additionally, an analysis of influence of the key frames residuum complexity on WZ frames bitrate was conducted. The proposed algorithm adapted to the VISNET2 WZ video codec(3) confirms its efficiency in terms of achieving and maintaining the target bit-rate.
