Wireless video sensor networks (WVSNs) have drawn significant attention in recent years due to the advent of low-cost miniaturized cameras, which makes it feasible to realize large-scale WVSNs for a variety of applications including security surveillance, environmental tracking, and health monitoring. However, the conventional video encoding paradigms are not suitable for WVSNs due to resource constraints such as limited computation power, battery energy, and network bandwidth. In this paper, we evaluated and analyzed the performance of video encoders based on emerging video encoding paradigms such as distributed video coding (DVC) and distributed compressive video sensing (DCVS) for WVSN. The main objective of this work is to provide an insight about the computational complexity and energy consumption of these video encoders, and the quality of reconstruction from the encoded frames. Based on the findings, this paper also provides some guidelines for the selection of appropriate video encoders for a given WVSN application.

In 2002, the video coding community faced the emergence of a new video coding paradigm, the so-called Wyner-Ziv video coding, which was represented by two early solutions designed by the Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley research teams. This paper intends to briefly review, and compare these two early Wyner-Ziv video coding solutions, notably from the functional point of view. Moreover, this paper reviews some important developments of the Stanford Wyner-Ziv coding architecture, which has become the most popular in the literature.

Wyner-Ziv coding has been recognized as the most popular method up to now. For traditional WZC, side information is generated from intra-coded frames for use in the decoding of WZ frames. The unit for intra-coding is a frame and the distance between key-frames is kept constant. In this paper, the unit for intra-coding is a block, and the temporal distance between two consecutive key blocks can varying with time. A block is assigned a mode (WZ or intra-coded), depending on the result of spatio-temporal analysis, and encoded in an alternative manner. This strategy improves the overall coding efficiency, while maintaining a low encoder complexity. The performance gain can achieve up to 6 dB with respect to the traditional pixel-domain WZC.

distributed video coding (DVC) systems described in the literature often make use of a feedback channel to determine the rate. However, supporting such a feedback channel in practice may be difficult, particularly considering that current approaches are unable to incorporate constraints on feedback channel usage. Therefore, in this paper we propose a system in which the number of requests per Wyner-Ziv frame can be constrained to a fixed value. Our technique involves decoder-side rate estimation, modeling of its accuracy, and finally defining the number of Wyner-Ziv bits for each of the requests allowed. The experimental results indicate that the performance loss is limited when compared to a configuration operating without constraints on the feedback channel.

distributed video coding (DVC) is an increasingly popular approach among the researchers in video coding during past few years due to its attractive and promismig features. In DVC, the majority of the computational complexity has been shifted from encoder to the decoder in comparison to its conventional counterparts, including MPEG and H.26x enabling a dramatically low cost encoder implementation. Side information generation, carried out at the decoder, is a major function in the DVC coding algorithm and plays a key-role in determining the performance of the codec. In this paper, a novel iterative refinement technique is proposed for the side information generation process. Simulation results of the proposed technique depict a consistent improvement in performance in comparison to the state-of-the-art in pixel domain DVC.

In wireless video broadcast system, analog JSCC joint source-channel coding schemes have attracted extensive attentions recently as they can avoid the cliff effect that occurs along with the conventional separate digital source/channel coding schemes. User cooperation is a new promising technology in wireless broadcast system, but conventional digital cooperative coding scheme is not very suitable to the present analog broadcast system because of the cliff effect. In this paper, we propose an adaptive cooperative video coding (ACVC) scheme for video broadcast in wireless cooperative system based on the analog JSCC and coset coding principles. Specifically, ACVC adopts a series of adaptive algorithms to adjust the transmission parameters and the coset code steps according to the channel condition and the feature of each packet. From the experimental results we can see that, in comparison with existing cooperative schemes, ACVC shows stronger adaptability, especially when the cooperative channel condition is worse than the source-relay channel or when the cooperative bandwidth is limited.

distributed video coding is a coding paradigm that shifts the computational intensive motion estimation from encoder to decoder. The lightweight encoder is far more attractive for wireless sensor network and wireless video communication application. But there is seldom successful DVC application in the real world, because of the decoder is too complex to realize, also the performance of DVC is far from the H.264 codec. In fact as the development of the hardware, the mobile device is far stronger than before. In this paper, we propose a coding paradigm that makes the complexity of the encoder and decoder is comparable, which is called balanced video coding. The motion estimation of distributed video coding was moved from the decoder to encoder. The results of motion estimation computation were sent back to decoder. The experimental results show that the complexity of the encoder and decoder from balanced video coding was comparable.

A novel Compressed-Sensing-based(CS-based)distributed video coding(DVC)system,called distributed Adaptive Compressed video Sensing(DISACOS),is proposed in this *** this system,the input frames are divided into key frames and non-key frames,which are encoded by block CS *** key frames are encoded as CS measurements at substantially higher rates than the non-key frames and decoded by the Smoothed Projected Landweber(SPL)algorithm using multi-hypothesis *** the non-key frames,a small number of CS measurements are first transmitted to detect blocks having low-quality Side Information(SI)generated by the conventional interpolation or extrapolation at the decoder;then,another group of CS measurements are sampled again upon the decoder’s *** fully utilise the CS measurements,we adaptively allocate these measurements to each block in terms of different edge ***,the residual frame is reconstructed using the SPL algorithm and the decoded non-key frame is simply determined as the sum of the residual frame and the *** results have revealed that our CS-based DVC system yields better rate-distortion performance when compared with other schemes.

Application of Bit Error Rate Information Based on Weighted Error Estimating Code

Error Estimating Code (EEC) is a new channel coding method to estimate the Bit Error Rate (BER) information of the transmitted sequence. However, the estimated BER is not precise enough if the practical value of BER is high. A weighted EEC estimation method is proposed to improve the accuracy performance of BER estimation by classifying the raw estimation results into intervals and multiplying them by different coefficients separately. The applications of weighted EEC in modulation selection scheme and distributed video coding are discussed. Simulation results show that the EEC-based modulation selection method can achieve better performance at a cost of little redundancy and computation, and the EEC-based rate estimation method in distributed video coding can save the decoding time.

Energy- and Thermal-Aware video coding via Encoder/Decoder Workload Balancing

video coding and compression are essential components of multimedia services but are known to be computationally intensive and energy demanding. Traditional video coding paradigms, predictive and distributed video coding (PVC and DVC), result in excessive computation at either the encoder (PVC) or decoder (DVC). Several recent papers have proposed a hybrid PVC/DVC codec which shares the video coding workload between encoder and decoder. In this article, we propose a controller for such hybrid coders that considers energy and temperature to dynamically split the coding workload of a system comprised of one encoder and one decoder. We also present two heuristic algorithms for determining safe operating temperatures in the controller solution: (1) stable state thermal modeling algorithm, which focuses on long term temperatures, and (2) transient thermal modeling algorithm, which is better for short-term thermal behavior. Results show that the proposed algorithms result in more balanced energy utilization, improve overall system lifetime, and reduce operating temperatures when compared to strictly PVC and DVC systems.
