Phase-based side information generation in distributed video coding

In distributed video coding, the quality of side information (SI) directly affects the final compression efficiency and rate-distortion performance. In the process of generating SI, many methods require accurate pixel matching and produce intermediate frames based on calculating motion vectors. As a result, they perform poorly in scenarios such as light changes, motion blur, and so on. In this case, phase-based frame interpolation for video (PBFI) is proved to be effective. And it has the advantages of simple implementation and easy parallelization. However, this method cannot get a good result when interpolating the video sequence of large motion. This paper proposes a phase-based SI generation method, which applies PBFI to distributed video coding and improves it from two aspects. (1) Move the high frequency information to the low frequency, reduce the proportion of the high frequency components, so that more frequency components can be interpolated in phase;(2) By correcting the phase difference again, more accurate phase shift information can be obtained when facing the video sequence of large motion. Simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the quality of the generated SI. Thereby the overall performance of the distributed video coding system can be improved.

Aiming for low complexity encoding video coders based on Wyner-Ziv theory are still unsuccessfully trying to match the performance of predictive video coders One of the most important factors concerning the coding performance of distributed coders is modeling and estimating the correlation between the original video signal and its temporal prediction generated at the decoder One of the problems of the state of the art correlation estimators is that their performance is not consistent across a wide range of video content and different coding settings To address this problem we have developed a correlation model able to adapt to changes in the content and the coding parameters by exploiting the spatial correlation of the video signal and the quantization distortion In this paper we describe our model and present experiments showing that our model provides average bit rate gains of up to 12% and average PSNR gains of up to 0 5 dB when compared to the state of the-art models The experiments suggest that the performance of distributed coders can be significantly improved by taking video content and coding parameters into account (c) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

Efficient bit rate control method for distributed video coding system

An efficient bit rate control method for the transform domain distributed video coding (DVC) system is proposed. In order to decide quantization levels of each transform coefficient in the proposed distributed video decoder, a new bitplanewise zigzag scanning method is used. The bit rate can be controlled precisely in the proposed system, since the number of available bit rates is equal to the number of bitplanes. On the other hand, the bit rate is controlled by changing fixed quantization tables in conventional methods. In the proposed DVC system, Wyner-Ziv frames can be efficiently reconstructed by refining the side information with transmitted parity bits. If there is no transmitted parity bit, the side information is not refined and it is considered to be a decoded Wyner-Ziv frame. The side information is refined more precisely, as the amount of transmitted parity bits increases. The proposed DVC system provides superior coding performance with a precise bit rate control compared to conventional methods.

Turbo trellis coded modulation for transform domain distributed video coding

A transform domain distributed video coding (DVC) codec is proposed using turbo trellis coded modulation (TTCM). TTCM symbols are generated at the DVC decoder using the side information and the parity bits received from the DVC encoder. These generated symbols We used Lit the TTCM-based DVC decoder to decode the bit stream. Simulation results show that a significant rate-distortion performance gain call be achieved using the proposed codec compared to the best state-of-the-art transform domain DVC codecs discussed in tire literature.

Multiple Description distributed video coding Using Redundant Slices and Lossy Syndromes

During the last years, video coding designers have proposed robust coding approaches that combine Multiple Description coding (MDC) schemes with distributed video coding (DVC) principles. In this way, it is possible to obtain a better error resilience since the distortion drifting through the sequence is significantly mitigated by the DVC coding unit. The paper presents a Multiple Description distributed video Coder (MDDVC) that codes the input video signal generating a set of "lossy" syndromes for each pixel block and creates different descriptions multiplexing primary and redundant video packets. Experimental results show that at high loss probabilities the proposed solution improves the results of the original MDC approach.

Key frame quantisation error reduction in distributed video coding

Proposed is a post-processing scheme to reduce the quantisation noise of the key frames by using the decoded neighbour Wyner-Ziv frames in a distributed video coding framework. The proposed scheme results in a quality gain of up to 2 dB for the key frames and improves the overall rate-distortion performance of the codec without adding any additional complexity at the encoder.

Reducing quantisation loss and improving side information in distributed video coding

A new architecture combining pixel-domain processing and transform-domain processing in distributed video coding is proposed to reduce quantisation loss. A side information updating algorithm corresponding to the new architecture is also presented. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme brings up to 2 dB gains in rate-distortion performance without sacrificing encoder complexity significantly.

Efficient Real-Time distributed video coding by Parallel Progressive Side Information Regeneration

distributed video coding (DVC) provides a different compression paradigm that consists of lightweight encoder and complex decoder. This compression paradigm shed a light for nowadays mobile devices which equipped with limited battery and computing resources while the corresponding multimedia service is backed up by cloud computing infrastructures. After years of developing, the coding performance and the decoding speed of DVC are still facing serious challenges, for example, DVC's rate-distortion (RD) performance is far behind the traditional prediction based video codec (e.g., H. 264) and the required decoding complexity handicaps its value in practical usage. In order to meet these challenges, we propose an efficient real-time DVC framework with progressive side information regeneration by taking GPGPU-based parallel computing into account. The proposed system can resolve one of the achilles' heels, i.e., the large group of picture scenario, of DVC codec with good RD performance and much improved decoding speed. The Bjontegaard Delta peak signal-to-noise ratio improvement of our system is up to 2.87 dB as compared with DISCOVER codec, which is also comparable with that of the state-of-the-art optical flow-based DVC codecs. The average decoding speed goes up to 22.44 frames per second (FPS) and even up to 76.35 FPS for Hall sequence. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first DVC codec which tackles the RD performance and the decoding speed issues simultaneously.

A joint correlation noise estimation and decoding algorithm for distributed video coding

distributed video coding is relatively a novel video coding paradigm that enables a lower complex video encoding compared to conventional video coding schemes, at the expense of a higher-complexity decoder. Improving the rate-distortion and coding efficiency is a challenging problem in distributed video coding. Using a suitable correlation noise model along with an accurate estimation of its parameter can lead to an improved ratedistortion performance. In a distributed video codec, theWyner-Ziv frames are not available at the decoder. In addition, the correlation noise is not stationary and its statistics vary within each frame and in its corresponding transform coefficient bands. Hence, the estimation of the correlation noise model parameter is not a feasible task. In this paper, a new decoder is proposed to estimate the correlation noise parameter and carry out the decoding process progressively and recursively on an augmented factor graph. In the proposed decoder, a recursive message passing algorithm is used for decoding the bitplanes corresponding to each DCT band in a WZ frame, and simultaneously, for estimating and refining the correlation noise distribution parameter. To approximate the posterior distribution of the correlation noise parameter, and consequently, derive a closed-form expression for the messages on the augmented factor graph, a variational Bayes algorithm is employed. Extensive simulations are carried out to show that using the proposed decoder leads to considerable improvement in the rate-distortion performance of the distributed video codec, particularly on video sequences with fast motions.

Sequential motion estimation using luminance and chrominance information for distributed video coding of Wyner-Ziv frames

Proposed is a novel side information refinement technique for Wyner-Ziv video frames in distributed video coding using sequential motion compensation with luminance and chrominance information for a given bit plane to update the side information for the next bit plane. Simulation results show that over 3 dB PSNR gain can be obtained with the proposed algorithm over the best available pixel domain Wyner Ziv codec from the literature [Natario et al.] at the same bit rate.
