Several approaches to visualizing simulated data are described. It is noted that a centralized video animation facility represents the state of the art in scientific visualization, but is too expensive to replicate widely. Methods used at LANL for connecting supercomputers with display units, ranging from dumb terminals to powerful workstations, are also described. Of particular interest is the Scientific visualization Workbench, an inexpensive and effective way of using `televisualization' to move data from supercomputer to user and to modify the user's display. The implication of higher speed networks are discussed

We report on our iGrid2005 demonstration, called the "Dead Cat Demo";an example of a highly interactive augmented reality application consisting of software services distributed over a wide-area, high-speed network. In this work, we present the design and implementation of distributed visualization and collaboration for an immersive 3D visualizer in a component-oriented fashion. The design follows an MVC approach, isolating all the business objects in the lowest level of the application, making it modular and extensible, therefore providing an easier prototyping of functionality and the isolation of complex business logic algorithms. This design as a solution came from the necessity of an existing visualizer with a monolithic implementation, whose maintainability and improvement are impaired due to the coupling between the business logic and the diverse visualization and distribution algorithms. Our design may be reused as an inspiration for other visualizers that wish to reduce the complexity and cost of the development of new business functionality. We implemented the designed visualizer, where we verified both the synchronism of the distributed visualization and the consistency of the collaboration among multiple nodes. We also evaluated the performance impact caused by the distributed visualization.

Vistle is a scalable distributed implementation of the visualization pipeline. Modules are realized as MPI processes on a cluster. Within a node, different modules communicate via shared memory. TCP is used for communication between clusters. Vistle targets especially interactive visualization in immersive virtual environments. For low latency, a combination of parallel remote and local rendering is possible.

As systems grow at an increasing pace to keep up with the demand for larger data and ever more detailed simulations, failures also occur more frequently on various levels. Traditionally, fault tolerance for visualization is either disregarded due to performance reasons or handled analogously to the state of the art for high performance computing (HPC), for example rollback-recovery. In this paper we summarize the inherent challenges of distributed visualization as well as the applicability and differences of fault tolerance methods used in HPC and distributed visualization. We derive complementary methods to increase the resilience of such systems and present visualization specific methods for failure semantics and masking.

A number of different resources and a body of new technology has been empowering visualization applications. At the same time, supportive and mostly experimental techniques aimed at increasing the representation power and interpretability of complex data, such as sonification, are beginning to establish a foundation that can be used in real applications. This work presents an architecture and a corresponding prototype implementation of a visualization system that incorporates some of these research and technological aspects, such as visualization on the web, distributed visualization, and sonification. The current development of the prototype is presented, as well as its implications and planned improvements.

visualization is a powerful tool for analyzing data and presenting results in science, engineering and medicine. This paper reviews ways in which it can be used in distributed and/or collaborative environments. distributed visualization addresses a number of resource allocation problems, including the location of processing close to data for the minimization of data traffic. The advent of the Grid Computing paradigm and the link to Web Services provides fresh challenges and opportunities for distributed visualization-including the close coupling of simulations and visualizations in a steering environment. Recent developments in collaboration have seen the growth of specialized facilities (such as Access Grid) which have supplemented traditional desktop video conferencing using the Internet and multicast communications. Collaboration allows multiple users-possibly at remote sites-to take part in the visualization process at levels which range from the viewing of images to the shared control of the visualization methods. In this review, we present a model framework for distributed and collaborative visualization and assess a selection of visualization systems and frameworks for their use in a distributed or collaborative environment. We also discuss some examples of enabling technology and review recent work from research projects in this field.

Virtue: Performance visualization of parallel and distributed applications

High-speed, wide-area networks have made it both possible and desirable to interconnect geographically distributed lections of scientific data, remote scientific instruments, and high-performance computer systems. Historically, performance analysis has focused on monolithic applications executing on large, stand-alone, parallel systems. In such a domain, measurement, postmortem analysis, and code optimization suffice to eliminate performance bottlenecks and optimize applications. distributed visualization, data mining, and analysis tools allow scientists to collaboratively analyze and understand complex phenomena. Likewise, real-time performance measurement and immersive performance display systems-that is, systems providing large stereoscopic displays of complex data-enable collaborating groups to interact with executing software, tuning its behavior to meet research and performance goals. To satisfy these demands, the authors designed Virtue, a prototype system that integrates collaborative, immersive performance visualization with real-time performance measurement and adaptive control of applications on computational grids. These tools enable physically distributed users to explore and steer the behavior of complex software in real time and to analyze and optimize distributed application dynamics.
