Enabling advanced environmental management via remote and distributed visual data exploration and analysis

We present amethodology that has proven useful in surmounting technical obstacles encountered while producing mobile-enabled, remote visual data exploration and analysis capabilities. Our results focus on a environmental remediation case study. Using a desktop or mobile device, a scientist is able to perform subset selection of a large collection of time-varying observational, well-log data, then to view this data in 3D from arbitrary orientations, and to view output from visualizations of a time-varying 3D fluid flow simulation showing the spread of analytes over time through the same spatial region as the observational data. This infrastructure is capable of delivering imagery to handheld devices at (modestly) interactive rates, supports a variety of different types of mobile devices, and is useful to scientists who may need to access this kind of capability from field locations.

Remote visualization is an enabling technology aiming to resolve the barrier of physical distance. Although many researchers have developed innovative algorithms for remote visualization, previous work has focused little on systematically investigating optimal configurations of remote visualization architectures. In this paper, we study caching and prefetching, an important aspect of such architecture design, in order to optimize the fetch time in a remote visualization system. Unlike a processor cache or Web cache, caching for remote visualization is unique and complex. Through actual experimentation and numerical simulation, we have discovered ways to systematically evaluate and search for optimal configurations of remote visualization caches under various scenarios, such as different network speeds, sizes of data for user requests, prefetch schemes, cache depletion schemes, etc. We have also designed a practical infrastructure software to adaptively optimize the caching architecture of general remote visualization systems, when a different application is started or the network condition varies. The lower bound of achievable latency discovered with our approach can aid the design of remote visualization algorithms and the selection of suitable network layouts for a remote visualization system.

Advanced visualization technologies are gaining major importance to allow presentation and manipulation of high dimensional data. Since new health technologies are constantly increasing in complexity, adequate information processing is required for diagnostics and treatment. Therefore, the German D-Grid initiative started to build visualization centers in 2008, which have recently been embedded into the existing compute and storage infrastructure. This paper describes an analysis of this infrastructure and the interplay with life science applications for 3D and 4D visualization and manipulation. Furthermore, the performance and business aspects regarding accounting, pricing and billing are investigated. The results show the viability and the opportunities for further optimization of this novel service approach and the possibilities for a sustainable business scenario.

In this paper, we describe a feature extraction and tracking algorithm for AMR (Adaptive Mesh Refinement) datasets that operates within a distributed computing environment. Because features can span multiple refinement levels and multiple processors, tracking must be performed across time, across levels, and across processors. The resulting visualization is represented as a "Feature Tree". A feature will now contain multiple parts corresponding to different levels of refinements. The feature tree allows a viewer to determine that a feature splits or merges at the next refinement level, and allows a viewer to extract and isolate a multi-level isosurface and watch how that surface changes over both time and space. The algorithm is implemented within a computational steering environment which enables the visualization routines to operate on the data in-situ (while the simulation is ongoing).

VisPartDEM is a novel grid visualization tool for large particle systems simulated by the discrete element method. Architecture of VisPartDEM is designed for grid infrastructure build by gLite middleware. XML interface for remote data is developed to provide grid users with the interactive dataset selection by using GUI. Parallel visualization engine of VisPartDEM runs on working nodes of a computing element while the compressed video stream is efficiently transferred through the network and displayed on the client by Remote Viewer, which offers high interactivity level. Performance analysis of VisPartDEM is made on BalticGrid testbed based on multi-core architecture.

Tiled display systems have emerged as a means to visualize complex scientific data sets, while reducing the need to subsample potentially critical information. This paper presents a global-timestamp-based approach for the development and the control of real-time distributed tiled display systems. Two different techniques are presented that enable the development of multi-tile configurations in combination with distributed render clusters. A single-display-multiple-renderer approach is presented that fuses visuals generated by multiple render nodes into one composite image, which can be assigned to one specific display tile. This approach is subsequently extend to a multiple-display-multiple-rendered approach that facilitates the creation of scalable display systems consisting of multiple display tiles and render clusters. This paper investigates challenges that have to be addressed by these systems and describes a proof-of-concept system based on a high-level object-oriented real-time programming scheme called TMO.

Collaborative and distributed visualization applications generally require access to high-performance and high-end resources that are both expensive to own and maintain. Often there are also a limited number of such resources available. The development of Grid infrastructure allows these resources to be shared by visualization service providers and users. However, effective use of such resources necessitate the development of mechanisms which take into account the particular constraints needed to satisfy particular application resource demands as some visualization applications may be dependent on requiring data to be stored and delivered in a timely manner. Therefore, these applications must adhere to stringent real-time constraints and Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements. In this paper we proposed a novel approach to matching visualization service requests with service advertisements using QoS attributes. A prototype was developed, and experiments were performed and results were discussed.

A new parallel volume rendering method for large unstructured data has been developed for the Earth Simulator. Concurrent visualization can be performed with numerical computation modules on the supercomputer. The supervoxel partition and voxel resampling techniques were adopted to get high parallel performance for extremely large complicated unstructured datasets. In order to reduce the number of voxels and keep enough precision in the resampling method, a detail-preserving voxel resampling method is presented in which some original unstructured grid elements are added into important voxels. Four kinds of details are defined in the method, including volume, interval, boundary and isosurface details. The implementation and optimization strategies for the Earth Simulator are described according to its hardware architecture. The experimental results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

We present SPVN (Scalable Parallel Visual Networking), a new application framework for interactive visualization of large datasets. We designed SPVN with four main goals in mind. First, we wanted to make it easier for developers to write visualization applications that can handle massive datasets and deliver interactive frame rates. SPVN provides developers with efficient implementations of many optimization techniques such as spatialization, simplification, view-frustum culling, occlusion culling, multithreading, and prefetching. Second, we wanted developers to better leverage the performance and scalability of a cluster of inexpensive rendering servers, while insulating them from the complexities of distributed programming. SPVN provides implementations of sort-first rendering with dynamic load balancing, sort-last rendering with depth-order and binary-swap image compositing, and a distributed shared memory mechanism that gives programmers the illusion that all machines have all the data at all times. Third, we wanted to support multiple low-level rendering libraries. SPVN separates modeling from rendering so that the same scene can be rendered by different back-ends (e.g., OpenGL, DirectX, or ray tracing). Finally, we wanted SPVN to be easy to use and extend. SPVN uses the familiar concept of a scene graph, applies many well-established design patterns (e.g., smart pointers, factories, observers, and visitors), and allows for extensions of shape classes, rendering algorithms, and file formats using registry and plug-in mechanisms. We have used SPVN to develop both remote and immersive visualization applications, and found that SPVN reduces the amount of time and money it takes to write such applications.
