Recent technological advances allow modification and fine-tuning of the wireless network characteristics. By modifying wireless properties such as transmission timeslots or frequencies, the wireless links quality can be optimized in order to reach optimal communication at the network level. In this paper, we approach the wireless network optimization problem as a distributed constraint optimization problem. As an inherently distributed task, the number of constraints, variables, and their domain sizes can be very large. Therefore, incomplete and local-search solutions such as the distributed Stochastic Algorithm (DSA) are best suited to solve this class of problems. In this work, we study the wireless network optimization procedure of such solvers considering wireless messaging cost. Furthermore, we introduce Weighted-DSA a stochastic algorithm for wireless optimization. By reducing the search-space of the variables and re-exploring periodically, results show that this algorithm is able to reach optimal solution quality under minimal messageing costs.

Analysis of sliding frame R-ALOHA protocol for real-time distributed wireless networks

In this article, performance of sliding frame (SF) R-ALOHA protocols for real-time distributed wireless networks is investigated analytically and by simulation. First, a discrete Markov chain and Monte Carlo modeling are constructed to evaluate dynamic behavior of the protocol in transient state including distribution of the system stabilization time (SST) and the average number of successful terminals. Furthermore, a hierarchical decomposition is conducted to simplify steady state analysis, thus generating two one-dimensional Markov chains for closed-form performance of SF R-ALOHA under local wireless environment. Terminals with Poisson message arrivals and Poisson message length are analyzed. Consequently, performance indices, such as throughput, the average message delay, and packet dropping probability, are derived from the proposed analytic models. Capture effects on the SF R-ALOHA system in the presence of multipath and shadowing are also obtained by the Markov chain analysis. The numerical results from the analytic models are compared with that from simulation and equilibrium point analysis, proving correctness, accuracy, and scalability of the decomposition. The results also reveal performance characteristics of the SF R-ALOHA system.

A noncontact positioning measuring system based on distributed wireless networks

A new type of distributed wireless network which combines a laser range finder with binocular vision sensors is developed to improve the accuracy of measurement along the direction of optical axis. By obtaining the coordinate of the target by the binocular vision sensor, the laser range finder which is installed at a two-axes rotary table is able to measure the distance between the target and the turntable of the current position. Then, an adaptive weighted fusion algorithm of multi-sensor information fusion is proposed to improve the utilization efficiency of the multi-sensor information and to make the results more accurate. Finally, the parameters of the system are calibrated through the simulations and the experiments show that the system is feasible and effective.

Throughput and reliability analysis of a scalable broadcast MAC for distributed wireless networks

In carrier-sense-multiple-access-based distributed wireless networks, the legacy mechanism of arbitrating the access attempts of multiple broadcast users (using a fixed-size temporal contention window consisting of multiple contention slots having uniform selection probability) has been well understood to be inefficient in avoiding collisions, especially when the network is large. Recently, it has been found that this inefficiency can be mitigated by exploiting an additional degree of freedom (DoF) over the contention window, referred to as contention slot selection distribution (CSSD). In this article, the authors examine how the additional DoF contributes to enhancing network performance and quantify the performance gains that the network can achieve in terms of easily understandable performance indicators like network throughput efficiency and broadcast reliability. A discrete-time Markov chain is formulated to characterize the access arbitration process involving a reverse exponential CSSD and its steady-state solution is fed to a renewal-reward process-based network model to estimate the performances of interest. Validated numerical results are presented which confirm that this new channel access arbitration mechanism can significantly enhance the scalability of distributed broadcast networks.

An intelligent access algorithm for large scale multihop wireless networks based on mean field game

In a distributed wireless network with a large number of nodes, competitive access of nodes may result in the deterioration of throughput and energy. Therefore, in this paper we propose an intelligent access algorithm based on the mean field game (MFG). First, we formulate the competitive access process between nodes as a game Query ID="Q1" Text="Please check and confirm that the authors and their respective affiliations have been correctly identified and amend if necessary." process by a stochastic differential game model, which maximizes the energy efficiency of nodes and obtain the optimal behavior strategy while meeting the requirements of channel access. However, as the number of nodes increases, the dimension of the matrix used to characterize the interaction between nodes becomes too large, which increases the complexity of the solution procedure. Therefore, we introduce the MFG and the interaction between nodes can be approximately transformed into the interaction between nodes and the mean field, which not only reduces the complexity, but also reduces the computational overhead. In addition, the HJB-FPK equation is solved to obtain the Nash equilibrium of the MFG. Finally, a backoff strategy based on the Markov model is proposed, and the node obtains the corresponding backoff strategy according to the network situation and its own state. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has good performances on optimizing network throughput and energy efficiency for a large scale multi-hop wireless network.

Design and Analysis of a distributed and Fair Access (DFA) MAC Protocol for Multihop wireless networks

The distributed and Fair Access (DFA) protocol is proposed for multihop wireless networks. The proposed protocol eliminates several problems existed in the original binary countdown (BCD) algorithm, such as lack of fairness, data collision and the inefficiency of channel usage, by introducing hidden-station elimination and second chance channel contention that are suitable for multihop networks. Further in this paper, numerical analysis of modeling the behavior of DFA in multihop networks are presented. With low computational complexity, the proposed model estimates the transmission probability and the channel throughput. In our analysis, the data transmission influenced by the remote stations is carefully monitored and analyzed. Our extensive simulation results have verified the proposed model and demonstrated the superior performance of DEN comparing with other existing MAC protocols including the IEEE 802.11 and SYN-MAC [1]. Equipped with many attractive features such as high efficiency, fairness, simplicity and robustness, DFA can be served as a promising alternative MAC protocol for the distributed wireless networks.

We propose a general framework to analyze incentives for user cooperation, and characterize the tradeoff between fairness and efficiency for cooperative networks. More specifically, we define the incentive region as a set of action profiles that provides cooperation benefits to all users and focus on the optimization of efficiency and fairness within this region. We introduce a linear resource allocation (LRA) scheme and show that most existing fairness measures can be converted to LRA with different linear coefficient vectors. We then propose the concept of strong price of fairness (SPoF) to study the network efficiency of the strong equilibrium. We show that both the SPoF and fairness measures are connected to the linear coefficient vector of LRA, which makes it possible to study the fairness and efficiency relationship. We then use the random access (RA) system as an example to show how to use the proposed framework to study a specific wireless network.

Multiple antennas have become a common component of wireless networks, improving range, throughput, and spatial reuse, both at the link and network levels. At the same time, carrier sensing is a widely used method of improving spatial reuse in distributed wireless networks, especially when there is limited coordination among non-communicating nodes. While the combination of carrier sensing and multiple antennas has been considered in the literature, physical layer spatial models and the attendant consequences have not been included. The primary reason for this has been the difficulty of analyzing functionals of interacting point processes. Having developed new methods of quantifying physical layer performance with robust spatial network models, we use these techniques to address the following questions: What multiple antenna techniques produce the best network performance, and what is the performance gain? And, how should multiple antennas interact with carrier sensing parameters? Overall, the analysis confirms the significant benefit of multiple antennas in distributed wireless networks.

In this paper, we propose a distributed routing mechanism in dynamic spectrum access (DSA) networks based on a pricing mechanism, in which each node put prices on their relaying services and adjust the price according to the interference condition and the spectrum availability. The proposed mechanism tries to provide required bandwidth for multimedia transmissions in DSA networks. DSA networks employing cognitive radios enable agile transmissions and provide additional transmission capacity that would otherwise be unavailable. Although the technologies applied in DSA networks provide more information than traditional contention-based networks, conventional resource allocation mechanisms cannot fully use these measurements from the MAC layers to regulate the network. The interference pattern in distributed DSA networks is also not the same as it is in contention-based TDMA networks. Consequently, spectrum allocation mechanisms must cooperate with routing algorithms in order to adapt to the rapidly varying environment of distributed wireless networks. Routing decision is made based on the price offered and price for relaying. Resources are allocated during the routing process according to interference predictions based on spectrum measurements. Simulation results show that the proposed approach increased the throughput of the network by approximately 100% in heavy traffic situation relative to an AODV based direct resource allocation approach.

wireless networking has recently witnessed a lot of interest from consumers for its applications in mobile and personal communications. The most important feature of wireless networks is mobility support. However, low and variable bandwidth, high latency, variable transmission delays, and intermittent or unreliable network connections are often encountered in wireless environments. In response to the mentioned problems we adopt agent technology and present a framework which provides the basic functions required by MA-based applications.
