A Classroom-Based distributed workflow Initiative for the Early Involvement of Undergraduate Students in Scientific Research

Engaging freshman and sophomore students in meaningful scientific research is challenging because of their developing skill set and their necessary time commitments to regular classwork. A project called the Chondrule Analysis Project was initiated to engage first- and second-year students in an initial research experience and also accomplish several scientific objectives. Students take part in a classroom-based, distributed workflow project that aims to produce high-quality data on the physical dimensions of chondrules, mm-sized spherules contained in primitive meteorites called chondrites. Such data are needed to test astrophysical models for processes acting in the early solar system. Student investigators process X-ray microtomography data with resources contained on portable USB flash drives distributed to them. Students are exposed to data collection, data quality evaluation, interpretation, and presentation of their results. Herein, an introduction to the scientific objectives is given along with an evolutionary history of the project. A description of the current implementation of the course is presented, and future directions are discussed. Anonymous student evaluations of the course are used to demonstrate the educational and engaging nature of the project. Finally, we reflect on the possible benefits of such a project for first- and second-year students within STEM disciplines.

Data-centric workflows across organizations are gaining more and more popularity. To automate this process, the traditional approaches centralise related data from different organizations to the cloud, and then use a workflow engine to complete cross-organizational collaboration. There are limitations of those approaches, such as the requirement of data centralisation which could lead to the leakage of critical data. In this work, we present a workflow platform for consuming distributed data based on Kubernetes and JupyterFlow, and use blockchain technology to guarantee security and privacy through empowering the data owner with control of their own data. To reduce replication and network throughput, the blockchain only contains the meta data referring to the data in off-chain storage. We develope a JupyterHub extension to support data registration and query, and used the RESTFul API to connect the web application with the blockchain network. Finally, we demonstrate a simple data processing use case as proof-of-concept to validate our proposed platform.

Blockchain technology, originally popularized by cryptocurrencies, has been proposed as an infrastructure technology with applications in many areas of business management. Blockchains provide an immutable record of transactions, which makes them useful in situations where actors must cooperate but may not fully trust each other. In this paper, we examine the use of proof-of-work blockchains for executing inter-organizational workflows. We discuss architectural options and describe two prototype implementations of a blockchain-based workflow management system (WfMS), highlighting differences to traditional WfMS. Our main contribution is the identification of potential problems raised by proof-of-work blockchain infrastructure and recommendations to address them. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Blockchain technology provides an auditable and tamper-proof distributed infrastructure that can support distributed workflow management. Blockchains based on a Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) ordering consensus protocol address many of the shortcomings of proof-of-work chains, such as latency and non-finality of consensus. They are a suitable technology to support workflow execution, in large part because applications do not need to be adapted to deal with eventual consistency and delayed consensus of proof-of-work blockchains. Moreover, in contrast to earlier work that has typically developed custom workflow engines using smart contracts, we port an existing, full-featured workflow engine, the YAWL workflow engine, to a blockchain-based workflow management system (WfMS) without smart contracts.

A complex workflow is often executed by geographically dispersed partners or different organizations. As a solution for dealing with the decentralized nature of workflow applications, a workflow can be fragmented into small pieces and scheduled to different servers for its execution. An important challenge in distributed workflows is to optimize the fragmentation and distribution to achieve efficiency with respect to time and server resources. To tackle this challenge, we propose the application of process mining to the fragmentation of a workflow for distributed execution. The workflow model discovered through process mining records the actual execution of a workflow and allows in-depth analysis of its temporal behavior. Based on examination of the model resulting from process mining, we demonstrate how to determine the minimum time to finish a workflow and how to partition the workflow in order to achieve efficient server usage.

This paper specifies the definition of distributed workflow and analyzes the basis modeling and executing service of collaboration product exploitation process and gives a realizing method and several effective model of distributed workflow modeling. On the basis of summarizing the interaction models of business processes proposed by workflow Management Coalition, the characteristics of the interaction between the sub-processes within a collaborative product development process are analyzed. The implementation of workflow execution services based on Web services is studied to support the required interaction in collaborative product development process.

The 1999-2007 Irish National Seabed Survey is one of the largest ocean floor mapping projects ever attempted. Its aim is to map the ocean floor of the Irish territorial waters (approximately 525 000 km(2)). To date, the Geological Survey of Ireland has gathered in excess of 4TB of multibeam sonar data from the Irish National Seabed, and this data set is expected to exceed 10TB upon completion. The main challenge that arises from having so much data is how to extract accurate information given the size of the data set. Geological interpretation is carried out by visual inspection of bathymetric patterns. The size of this, and similar, data sets renders the extraction of knowledge by human observers infeasible. Consequently, the focus has turned to using artificial intelligence and computational methods for assistance. The commercial and environmental sensitivity of the data means that secure data processing and transmission are of paramount importance. This has lead to the creation of the MarineGrid project within the Grid-Ireland organisation. New methods have been developed for statistical analysis of bathymetric information specifically for automated geological interpretation of rock types on the sea floor and feature extraction from the sea floor. We present a discussion on how to provide Marine and Geological researchers convenient yet secure access to resources that make use of grid technologies including pre-written algorithms in order to exploit the Irish National Seabed Survey data archive. Situations of crisis management are often part of a global distributed system which involves several partners or collaborators, and it may be hard to take decisions if only partial information is available. In this paper, we propose to solve such issue by elaborating on (i) fuzzy logic approaches and (ii) distributed workflows. This combination supports the decision maker by suggesting possible actions for the management of occurring events. We base our work on a fire emergency situation, capitalizing on existing case studies and lessons learned. Our solution relies on the combination of fuzzy workflow for addressing uncertainty, and distributed workflow for addressing collaboration.

Dynamic workflow model fragmentation for distributed execution

workflow fragments are partitions of workflow model, and workflow model fragmentation is to partition a workflow model into fragments, which can be manipulated by multiple workflow servers. In this paper a novel dynamic workflow model fragmentation algorithm is proposed. Based on the well-known Petri net formalism, this algorithm partitioned the centralized process model into fragments step by step while the process is executed. The fragments created can migrate to proper servers, where tasks are performed and new fragments are created and forwarded to other servers to be executed in succession. The advantages of the proposed dynamic model fragmentation method include the enhanced scalability by outsourcing the business functionalities, the increased flexibility by designating execution sites on-the-fly, the avoidance of redundant information transfer by judging their pre-conditions before forwarding fragments, etc. An industrial case is given to validate the proposed approach. Later some discussions are made on the correctness of the algorithm and the structural properties of the workflow model. Finally the future research perspectives are pointed out.
