distributed-feedback laser actions in zirconia-ORMOSIL waveguides based on energy transfer between co-doped laser dyes

Laser dyes such as pyrromethene 567 (PM567), perylene red (P-red) and coumarin 540A (C540A) were doped into zirconia-organically modified silicate (ORMOSIL) materials prepared by low temperature sol-gel technique. Narrow line-width distributed feedback (DFB) laser actions were induced in the PM567 and/or P-red doped sol-gel planar waveguide. Tuning of the output wavelength was achieved by varying the period of the gain modulation generated by a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. Compared with those of PM567 and P-red solely doped thin films, tuning range of C540A, PM567 and P-red co-doped sol-gel planar waveguide was greatly extended, from 564.5 nm to 635.1 nm. Effective utilization of quantum-cascade distributed-feedback lasers in absorption spectroscopy

A variable duty cycle quasi-cw frequency scanning technique was applied to reduce thermal effects resulting from the high heat dissipation of type I quantum-cascade lasers. This technique was combined with a 100-m path-length multipass cell and a zero-air background-subtraction technique to enhance detection sensitivity to a parts-in-10(9) (ppb) concentration level for spectroscopic trace-gas detection of CH4, N2O, H2O, and C2H5OH in ambient air at 7.9 mu m. A new technique for analysis of dense high resolution absorption spectra was applied to detection of ethanol in ambient air, yielding a 125-ppb detection limit. Power- or frequency-driven hysteresis for continuous-wave optically injected distributed-feedback semiconductor lasers

Bistabilities between a steady (or pulsating, chaotic) and different pulsating regimes are investigated for an optically injected semiconductor laser. Both numerical and experimental studies are reported for continuous-wave single-mode semiconductor distributed-feedback lasers emitting at 1.55 mu m. Hysteresis are driven by either changing the optically injected power or the frequency difference between both lasers. The effect of the injected laser pumping rate is also examined. Systematic mappings of the possible laser outputs (injection locking, bimodal, wave mixing, chaos or relaxation oscillations) are carried out. At small pumping rates (1.2 times threshold), only locking and bimodal regimes are observed. The extent of the bistable area is either 11 dB or 35 GHz, depending on the varying parameters. At high pumping rates (4 times threshold), numerous injection regimes are observed. Injection locking and its bistabilities are also reported for secondary longitudinal modes. Third-order photonic-crystal distributed-feedback quantum cascade lasers

We demonstrate room-temperature operation of broad-area edge-emitting photonic-crystal distributed-feedback quantum cascade lasers at lambda similar to 4.6 mu m. The lasers use a weak-index perturbed third-order photonic-crystal lattice to control the optical mode in the wafer plane. Utilizing this coupling mechanism, the near-diffraction-limited beam quality with a far-field profile normal to the facet can be obtained. Single-mode operation with a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20 dB is achieved in the temperature range of 85-290 K. The single-facet output power is above 1 W for a 55 mu m x 2.5 mm laser bar at 85 K in pulsed mode. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

FABRICATION AND PERFORMANCE-CHARACTERISTICS OF INGAASP RIDGE-GUIDE distributed-feedback MULTIQUANTUM-WELL LASERS

The fabrication and performance characteristics of InGaAsP ridge-guide distributed-feedback lasers with multiquantum-well active layers are reported. The lasers are 320 ??m long and have four active wells (??300 ?? thick). The lasers have threshold current ??100 mA at 30?°C, external differential quantum efficiency ??0.1 mW/mA/facet at 30?°C and To?? 60 K and can be operated in the same DFB mode up to 70?°C. The measured frequency chirp is about a factor of 3 smaller than that for conventional double-heterostructure lasers. The smaller chirp should allow larger repeater spacing for high-bit-rate long-distance fibre transmission systems applications.

Development of distributed-feedback tunable blue-violet waveguide plastic laser based on fluorene compound

The distributed feedback plastic lasers for blue-violet were developed. The developed fluorene molecules for electroluminescence devices were adopted and doped in poly(methymethacrylate: 2-hydroxyethylemethacryl ate). Laser operation was confirmed at a wavelength of about 410 nm using frequency-tripled and passively Q-switched Nd:Cr:YAG laser. A laser threshold of 70 nJ and the longest lifetime of 3000 shots were demonstrated.

Statistical properties of low-frequency fluctuations during single-mode operation in distributed-feedback lasers:: experiments and modeling

Extensive experimental and numerical investigations of feedback-induced instabilities in single-mode distributed-feedback lasers are presented that confirm the basic assumptions of the Lang-Kobayashi model. We give experimental evidence of the occurrence of low-frequency fluctuation (LFF), alternation between LFF and stable emission, and coherence collapse during single-mode operation of the laser. We have obtained quantitative agreement between modeling and experiment in long-time statistical investigations of the time intervals between subsequent LFF dropouts. In particular, we show that even the dependence of the dynamics on the injection current, which results in a scaling law, is quantitatively identical in modeling and experiment. Highly photostable distributed-feedback polymer waveguide blue laser using spirobifluorene derivatives

In this study, we synthesized the new spirobifluorene derivatives;hexylbiphenyl-spirobifluorene (HBP-Spiro) and triphenylamine-spirobifluorene (TPA-Spiro) and demonstrated the operation of a distributed-feedback polymer waveguide blue laser. In addition, we investigated the optical and lasing properties of spirobifluorene derivatives including photostability. The experimental slope efficiency and the energy threshold of a HBP-Spiro-doped waveguide laser were 3.6% and 1.9 mu J, respectively. An operation lifetime of 27,000 shots was obtained for a pump-pulse duration of 1.2 ns and energy of 3.0 mu J at a wavelength of 355 nm. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Threshold gain due to distributed-feedback in two-dimensional triangular- and square-lattice photonic crystal lasers

Numerical simulation of 2D square (SQ)- and triangular (TR)-lattice infinitr-width photonic crystal distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers showed that the threshold gain (g(th)) for the 3rd photonic band was the smallest in the Gamma -X direction (SQ-lattice), and was next smallest in the Gamma -M direction (TR-lattice), but one order of magnitude larger. The g(th) values for the 3rd photonic bands were qualitatively proportional to the slopes approximated for the 3rd bands, but the g(th) values for the 1st bands were independent of the lattice structure and direction. All the g(th) values for the 1st and 3rd bands decreased to about 1/50 of the original values when the thickness was increased from 8 to 32 cylinders because of the approaching of the threshold wavelength to the band edge and the longer optical path.

LINEWIDTH ENHANCEMENT IN distributed-feedback SEMICONDUCTOR-LASERS

It is demonstrated that the linewidth enhancement in distributed-feedback (DFB) laser diodes can differ significantly from (1+ alpha 2), where alpha is Henry's linewidth enhancement factor. The influence of the relevant laser parameters, the detuning of the gain peak wavelength, a pi /2 phase shift and a reflecting end facet on the linewidth enhancement is discussed with respect to an improved DFB laser design.
