Twisted hi-bi fiber distributed-feedback lasers with controllable output state of polarization

We demonstrate that single polarization, hi-bi fiber DFB lasers are, in general, characterized by elliptical state of polarization (SOP), due to the in-built fiber birefringence axis rotation. Externally applied birefringence axis twist is shown to provide accurate control of the output SOP. Continuous tuning from circular to linear polarization, with polarization extinction ratio of similar to 40 dB, has been demonstrated. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Second-harmonic generation of light at 544 and 272 nm from an ytterbium-doped distributed-feedback fiber laser

We report external cavity second-harmonic generation of light at 544 and 272 nm based on an ytterbium-doped distributed-feedback fiber laser. The nonlinear crystal used to generate light at 544 nm is LiNbO3, and the maximum output of the cavity is 845 mW, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 55%. In a second frequency-doubling step, using a beta-BaBa2O4 crystal, we generate up to 115 mW of light at 272 nm with a conversion efficiency of 14%. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

In this manuscript, we employ a time-domain traveling-wave model with a coupled-mode theory to characterize the dynamic behavior of a mid-Infrared (MIR) Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) in the distributed-feedback (DFB) configuration. Our investigation underscores the crucial influence of the linewidth enhancement factor (LEF) and spatial hole burning (SHB) on the single-mode behavior of DFB QCLs. Disregarding these factors leads to an overestimation of the range of pump currents granting single-mode emission and results in an inaccurate simulation of the multimodal dynamics of DFB QCLs. The numerical simulations presented in this work closely align with experimental observations, specifically focusing on a DFB QCL operating at a wavelength of 9.34 mu m.

In this study, we synthesized the new spirobifluorene derivatives;hexylbiphenyl-spirobifluorene (HBP-Spiro) and demonstrated the operation of a distributed-feedback polymer waveguide blue laser. In addition, we investigated the optical and lasing properties of spirobifluorene derivatives including photostability. The maximum experimental slope efficiency and the energy threshold of a HBP-Spiro-doped waveguide laser were 3.6% and 1.9 mu J, respectively. An operation lifetime of 27,000 shots was obtained for a pump-pulse duration of 1.2 ns and energy of 3.0 mu J at a wavelength of 355 nm.

In this work, we investigate experimentally optimized monolithic distributed-feedback (DFB) tapered master-oscillator power amplifiers (MOPA). The devices consist of three autonomously driven sections: a 1 mm long DFB ridge-waveguide (RW) laser, a 1 mm long RW pre-amplifier and 2 mm or 4 mm long tapered amplifiers. The ridge width and the full taper angle are 5 mu m and 6 degrees, respectively. Both laser facets are anti-reflection coated. The second order Bragg gratings in the DFB laser were realized by holographic photolithography, wet-chemical etching and a two-step epitaxy. The DFB tapered MOPAs emit nearly diffraction limited spectral single mode CW radiation at 1064 nm. The 6 mm long devices provide an optical power of about 12 W at DFB laser, pre-amplifier and tapered amplifier currents of 150 mA, 400 mA and 18 A, respectively. The 4 mm long devices generate more than 4 W at a tapered amplifier current of 7 A. The spectral drift versus output power is below 50 pm/W.

A compact distributed-feedback (DFB) dye laser with a plastic waveguide was developed. The DFB operation was attained by the interference of two pumping beams from a frequency-doubled pulsed Nd:YAG laser, and a wavelength range between 560 nm and 994 nm was continuously covered. The dye chip can instantaneously exchanged in any spectrum region. The threshold energy was decreased to the order of 100 muJ with the waveguide configuration. The maximum life of the dye chip was 10(6) shots.

In this article, we use a time-domain traveling-wave approach with a coupled-mode theory to describe the dynamics of a mid-Infrared (MIR) Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) in the distributed-feedback (DFB) configuration. We demonstrate that linewidth enhancement factor (LEF) and spatial hole burning (SHB) play a crucial role in influencing the device's single-mode behavior. Neglecting them leads to an overestimation of the interval of pump currents granting single-mode emission and to an inaccurate simulation of the QCLs' multimode dynamics. By taking into account these two mechanisms, we inspect the combined action of the DFB grating's coupling strength and end facets' reflectivity. The purpose is to supply designers with a guideline to achieve the optimal structure for efficient single-mode emission, which is a highly required specification in manifold applications, like free-space optical communication. Numerical simulations are in good agreement with experimental findings relative to a DFB QCL operating at 9.34 mu m.

The Fabrication of a distributed-feedback Quantum Cascade Laser Emitting at Around 4.6 μm and its Application in Photoacoustic Detection of Trace CO Gas

Photoacoustic (PA) detection of CO gas was demonstrated by using self-designed distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL) emitting at around 4.6 mu m. Details of the laser fabrication and the PA detection system are described. Single-mode lasers were designed to cover the strong CO absorption lines by using a buried first-order grating. Though the grating period is 0.72 mu m which is not the most appropriate period to get the highest performance lasers made from our epitaxial material, single-mode room temperature continuous wave (CW) operation (side-mode suppression ration (SMSR) above 25 dB) and pulsed operation at 70 degrees C were achieved. By using a differential Helmholtz resonant PA cell with 11 cm path length, the PA spectra for different CO concentrations from 120 to 10 mu mol/mol were obtained at room temperature.
