Modeling and analysis of distributed feedback quantum dot passively mode-locked lasers

In this paper, we investigate numerically two proposed monolithic distributed feedback quantum dot passively mode-locked lasers (DFB-QDMLLs) with and without gratings in the saturable absorber (SA) section in order to enhance two important performances of QDMLLs for ultrahigh-bit-rate and single-mode applications. We find out that depending on the length of the grating, optical pulses with durations of about 3-8 ps at approximately 2nd and 4th harmonics of cavity round-trip frequencies can be generated by the proposed structures. We also compare the temporal and spectral behaviors of these structures under specified bias conditions and SA lengths. It is shown that DFB-QDMLLs have the ability to generate optical pulses with more peak power than grating-embedded saturable absorber (GESA-DFB-QDMLL) structures which generate shorter pulses with narrower spectral bandwidths. We also show that DFB-QDMLLs operate in a larger range of absorber voltages while the other structure is very sensitive to absorber voltage and operates well for middle ranges of this parameter. Highly efficient solid-state distributed feedback dye laser based on polymer-filled nanoporous glass composite excited by a diode-pumped solid-state Nd:LSB microlaser

Realization of a compact, robust, highly stable, and efficient solid-state distributed feedback (DFB) dye laser based on pyrromethene 580-doped modified poly-(methyl methacrylate) embedded into nanoporous glass host is reported. A diode-pumped solid-state STA01SH-500 Nd:LSB microlaser (lambda = 532 nm;tau(0.5) similar to 0.5 ns;EP <= 80 mu J;f <= 500 Hz) is used as a pump source. When pumped well above threshold, a DFB laser emits a train of ultrashort pulses (tau <= 1 ns;tau(0.5) < 0.5 ns;Delta lambda(0.5) <= 0.01 nm), while at excitation intensities not far from threshold, single transform-limited picosecond pulses (tau(0.5) <= 40 ps;tau(0.5)Delta nu(0.5) similar to 0.3), tunable from 541 to 598 nm, are generated. The DFB lasing efficiency reaches similar to 60% upon an energy stability of similar to 1.4% and an overall service life of the active element of similar to 9 x 10(7) laser shots. More than an order of magnitude increase in the temperature stability of a lasing wavelength as compared with ethanol solutions of laser dyes is practically demonstrated. Near-infrared methane sensor based on a distributed feedback laser

In this article, a near-infrared methane detection system using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology was designed and implemented. The distributed feedback laser was driven by a self-developed temperature and current controller to allow scanning the selected absorption wavelength at 1654nm. Laser temperature fluctuation was lower than 0.01%, and the output emission wavelength was linear and stable. The emitted beam passed a reflective gas chamber and was received by the Indium Gallium Arsenide photodiode detector. Through a data acquisition card, a digital lock-in amplifier was developed to extract the second harmonics with real-time monitoring and adjustment. Based on Allan deviation analysis, the limit of detection was about 48ppm with a path length of 30cm, at an integration time of 6s. The experimental results revealed a maximum detection error of less than 3% at a gas concentration higher than 100ppm. The fluctuations rates in long-term (9hr) stability measurements for 1x10(3)ppm and 1x10(4)ppm methane samples were 0.8% and 0.48%, respectively, indicating good stability for the sensor. In the control module design, compared with previous reports on methane detection systems, the current system uses a self-developed temperature controller, a current driver and a signal processor, to allow real-time display and adjustments. The potential for adjustable wavelength scanning is available for multi-gas detection based on a single detection system.

Narrow-Strip 670 nm Gain-Coupled distributed feedback Laser Based on Periodic Anodes Fabricated by I-Line Lithography

A narrow-strip single-longitudinal-mode gain-coupled distributed feedback semiconductor laser with a central wavelength of approximately 670 nm is demonstrated. We fabricate a novel micro-scale regrowth-free gain-coupled grating with an island-like shape without nanoscale gratings by i-line lithography only. The maximum output power from the fiber of the device with butterfly package is 48.1 mW at 100 mA and its slope efficiency is 0.79 W/A. The laser can be continuously tuned from 670.750 to 670.784 nm with a side-mode suppression ratio of over 40 dB, covering the absorptive peak of lithium atoms. Our easily fabricated devices have great potential as light sources in many applications such as lithium atom detectors.

Polarization characteristics of a near infrared distributed feedback dye laser operated at the first, second and third orders of Bragg condition

The first, second, and third order distributed feedback lasing characteristics of LDS 759 dye in methanol were investigated. Both intensity modulation and polarization modulation were used to generate laser action. Tunable narrow line-width lasing output was achieved by crossing the pump beams at intersection angles matching the Bragg condition. It was observed that the threshold pump energy increased with the increase of the Bragg order. The ratio of the threshold energy required when using polarization modulation to that required when using intensity modulation increased with increasing Bragg order. The laser output showed different polarization characteristics when the feedback mechanism was changed from intensity modulation to polarization modulation. The degree of polarization of the laser output showed an increasing trend with the Bragg order, which changed from 0.13 at the first Bragg order to 0.67 at the second Bragg order under polarization modulation. Wide-band tuning of the distributed feedback lasing was obtained for first-order operation using both intensity modulation and polarization modulation, from 708 nm to 896 nm and 712 nm to 820 nm, respectively. A two-segment regrowth-free gain-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) laser monolithically integrated different gain contrast segments was proposed, realizing both wavelength-tunable (5 nm) and wavelength stabilization characteristics, controlled by a single electrode only. At current larger than 320 mA, side mode suppression ratio reached >30 dB with 3 dB linewidth <80 pm. The CW power reached up to 159 mW/facet at single-mode operation. Considering both uncoated facets all together, it is at the same power level as index-coupled DFB lasers. Periodic surface grooves and 4-mu m-width ridge were patterned merely by one-step i-line lithography. It provides a novel method for low-cost practical gain-coupled DFB laser fabrication, which can be used in either/both wavelength-tunable applications such as sensing and detection, or/and wavelength stabilization fields such as pumping fiber lasers.

Widely tunable dual-mode distributed feedback laser fabricated by selective area growth technology integrated with Ti heaters

A widely tunable dual-mode distributed feedback (DFB) laser fabricated by selective area growth (SAG) technology integrated with Ti heaters was demonstrated. In the device, an original mode spacing of 4 nm was obtained by the simple SAG technology. Ti thin-film heaters were integrated with a novel procedure, which simplifies the fabrication of such heaters greatly. A large electrical resistance of the heaters is obtained at the same time, resulting in a high wavelength tuning efficiency. An accurate mode spacing as small as 0.34 nm and as large as 8.06 nm is achieved, which corresponds to a wide beat frequency range from 42.2 GHz to 1 THz. The simple fabrication process indicates that it is promising for reducing the cost of dual-mode DFB laser in fabricating self-pulsation lasers and THz generators. Arrayed narrow linewidth erbium-doped waveguide-distributed feedback lasers on an ultra-low-loss silicon-nitride platform

We demonstrate an array of erbium-doped waveguide-distributed feedback lasers on an ultra-low-loss Si3N4 platform. Sidewall gratings providing the lasing feedback are defined in the silicon-nitride layer using 248 nm stepper lithography, while the gain is provided by a reactive co-sputtered erbium-doped aluminum-oxide layer. We observe lasing output over a 12 nm wavelength range (1531-1543 nm) from the array of five separate lasers. Output powers of 8 mu W and lasing linewidths of 501 kHz are obtained. Single-mode operation is confirmed, with side-mode suppression ratios over 35 dB for all designs. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Laterally coupled dual-grating distributed feedback lasers for generating mode-beat terahertz signals

We present a laterally coupled dual wavelength 1.56/1.57-mu m AlGaInAs/InP DFB laser, which, by introducing two different grating periods on each sidewall, emits two longitudinal modes simultaneously within the same cavity at a frequency separation of 0.82 THz. The beating signal is stabilized by nonlinear four-wave mixing in an electroabsorption modulator (EAM), located within a monolithically integrated resonant cavity. A stable 0.82-THz beating signal was observed over a wide range of bias parameters in terms of drive currents and bias to the DFB and EAM sections. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Tunable random distributed feedback fiber laser operating at 1 μm

A tunable random distributed feedback (RDFB) fiber laser operating at 1 mu m is presented, which consists of a piece of ytterbium-doped fiber, a manual tunable filter and a 1-km-long single-mode fiber that provides RDFB. The wavelength of the RDFB fiber laser can be tuned continuously from 1040 to 1090 nm with a linewidth of about 0.4 nm. Power output maintains good flatness in the 50 nm tuning range, with fluctuations within 1 dB. It is the first reported tunable RDFB fiber laser working at 1 mu m as far as we know.
