It is shown that lasing can be achieved in commercial organic liquid scintillators. Using a dynamic grating induced by an interference pattern in the scintillator volume, distributed feedback lasing is shown to occur in four out of five commercial liquid scintillators that have been investigated. Although these scintillators are not designed for lasing application, their purpose being to measure radioactivity, induction of a laser effect, furthermore with a tuning range of approximately 30 nm, has been attained. We report on a thin-film polymer distributed feedback (DFB) laser, composed of an active waveguide and an external volume Bragg grating providing second-order distributed feedback, and its output properties. The volume noncorrugated Bragg gratings were inscribed holographically in an organic -inorganic nanocomposite containing high refractive index inorganic nanoparticles. The active waveguide doped with PM576 was fabricated on top of the Bragg grating. The DFB laser presented exhibits both surface and edge emission by transverse optical pumping with nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. A theoretical model to analyze the influence of the parameters of the active waveguide and the Bragg grating on the laser performance has been developed. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Two-dimensional (2D) distributed feedback (DFB) lasers with gratings imprinted by thermal nanoimprint lithography on the active film are reported. They show thresholds for lasing of similar to 10 kW/cm(2), similar to the most efficient imprinted DFB lasers reported;and long operational lifetimes (under ambient conditions) of similar to 12 x 10(4) pump pulses. The key for their successful operation has been the selection of a highly efficient and stable dye, perylene orange (PDI-O), and a proper matrix to host it, the fluoro-modified thermoplastic resist mr-I7030R, which has enabled 2D imprinting while preserving the dye optical properties. The use of the UV-curable resist SU8 as an alternative matrix for PDI-O to be imprinted by combined nanoimprint and photolithography was also investigated, and was concluded to be unsuccessful due to severe photoluminescence quenching. By replacing PDI-O with Rhodamine 6G, lasers with reasonable thresholds, but with significantly inferior operational lifetimes in comparison to PDI-O/mr-I7030R devices, were obtained. Heterogeneously integrated III-V-on-silicon second-order distributed feedback lasers utilizing an ultra-thin DVS-BCB die-to-wafer bonding process are reported. A novel DFB laser design exploiting high confinement in the active waveguide is demonstrated. A 14 mW single-facet output power coupled to a silicon waveguide, 50 dB side-mode suppression ratio and continuous wave operation up to 60 degrees C around 1550 nm is obtained. distributed feedback (DFB) fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) are widely used as narrow-band filters and single-mode cavities for lasers. Recently, a nonlinear generation has been shown in 10-20 cm DFB gratings in a highly nonlinear fiber. First, we show in this Letter a novel fabrication technique of ultra-long DFBs in a standard fiber (SMF-28). Second, we demonstrate nonlinear generation in such gratings. A particular inscription technique was used to fabricate all-in-phase ultra-long FBG and to implement reproducible phase shift to form a DFB mode. We demonstrate stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) emission from this DFB mode and characterize the resulting laser. It seems that such a SBS based DFB laser stabilizes a pump's jittering and reduces its linewidth. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

We present first experimental investigation of fast-intensity dynamics of random distributed feedback (DFB) fiber lasers. We found that the laser dynamics are stochastic on a short time scale and exhibit pronounced fluctuations including generation of extreme events. We also experimentally characterize statistical properties of radiation of random DFB fiber lasers. We found that statistical properties deviate from Gaussian and depend on the pump power. Low-cost and wideband frequency tunable optoelectronic oscillator based on a directly modulated distributed feedback semiconductor laser

A novel scheme to realize a low-cost and wideband frequency tunable optoelectronic oscillator based on a directly modulated distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed scheme, neither an external modulator nor an electrical filter is used, and no more than 25 dB of the electrical loop gain is required due to the high modulation efficiency of the relaxation oscillation frequency of the DFB laser. Microwave signals with frequency coarsely tuned from 3.77 to 8.75 GHz are generated by changing the bias current and operation temperature of the DFB laser. The single sideband phase noise of the generated 6.97 GHz microwave signal is measured to be -103.6 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

We demonstrate GaSb-based laterally-coupled distributed-feedback type-I cascade diode lasers emitting near 2.9 mu m as potential sources for OH measurements. The laser heterostmctures consist of two GaInAsSb quantum well stages in series separated by GaSb/AlSb/InAs tunnel junction and InAs/AlSb electron injectors. Single-mode emission is generated using second order lateral Bragg grating etched alongside narrow ridge waveguides. The lasers were fabricated into 2-mm-long devices, solder-mounted epi-up on copper submounts, and operate at room temperature. With an anti-reflection coating at the emission facet, the lasers exhibit a typical current threshold of 110 mA at 20 degrees C and emit more than 14 mW of output power. The Bragg wavelength temperature tuning rate was 0.29 nm/degrees C.
