Gain-coupled distributed feedback laser based on periodic surface anode canals

A single-longitude-mode, broad-stripe, gain-coupled, distributed-feedback laser based on periodic surface anode canals (PSACs) is demonstrated. The PSACs, produced by i-line lithography, enhance the contrast of periodic current density in the active layer without introducing effective photon coupling;calculated grating kappa L is only 0.026. Power of 144.6 mW at 968.8 nm, with spectrum linewidth less than 0.04 nm on every uncoated cleavage facet, is obtained at a current of 1.2 A with a side-mode suppression ratio >29 dB. A multiwavelength generation in a random distributed feedback fiber laser based on hybrid Raman and erbium gain and a Lyot all-fiber spectral filter is demonstrated for the first time. The use of erbium-doped fiber allows a multi-wavelength generation to be achieved at lower pump powers in comparison with random fiber lasers based on Raman gain only. The operating bandwidth and flatness of power distribution between different lines in generation are also improved in the hybrid gain configuration.

We propose and demonstrate a symmetric step-apodized distributed feedback (DFB) fiber laser, which has an improved efficiency and a narrow linewidth. This special DFB laser cavity is based on a unique symmetric step-apodized pi-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (FBG) directly inscribed in a heavily erbium-doped fiber. The symmetric step-apodized phase-shifted grating is equivalent to a weak uniform phase-shifted FBG embedded in a pair of strong FBGs, and this design could increase the effective cavity length of a DFB fiber laser. Moreover, the symmetric step-apodized DFB laser cavity proposed in this work has a phase shift located in the cavity center. It could simplify the design process significantly due to the symmetry in the laser cavity. Experimental results show that the slope efficiency of a symmetric step-apodized DFB fiber laser could be increased to 1.06%, which is significantly higher than that of a uniform DFB fiber laser (i.e., 0.45%) under the same cavity length and pump conditions. In addition, the proposed DFB fiber laser exhibits a high stability. The fluctuations in lasing wavelength and output power were less than 12 pm (corresponding to a frequency shift of 1.49 GHz) and 0.13 dB within 24 h, respectively. Moreover, the full-width at half-maximum linewidth of the symmetric step-apodized DFB fiber laser was similar to 2.6 kHz, measured by the delayed self-heterodyne method with a 50-km fiber delayed line. As such, the proposed symmetric step-apodized DFB fiber laser could potentially be used as high-performance light source for fiber-optic sensors or coherent optical communication systems.

In this paper, we propose a delayed transmission/reflection ratiometric reflectometry (DTR3) scheme using a long-gauge fiber Bragg grating (FBG), which can be used for dynamic structural deformation monitoring of structures of between a few to tens of meters in length, such as airplane wings and helicopter blades. FBG sensors used for multipoint sensing generally employ wavelength division multiplexing techniques utilizing several Bragg central wavelengths;by contrast, the DTR3 interrogator uses a continuous pulse array based on a pseudorandom number code and a long-gauge FBG utilizing a single Bragg wavelength and composed of simple hardware devices. The DTR3 scheme can detect distributed strain at a 50 cm spatial resolution using a long-gauge FBG with a 100 Hz sampling rate. We evaluated the strain sensing characteristics of the long-gauge FBG when attached to a 2.5 m aluminum bar and a 5.5 m helicopter blade model, determining these structure natural frequencies in free vibration tests and their distributed strain characteristics in static tests. Three-straight-line approximation for phase delay on fiber Bragg grating reflection and its application to the mode analysis of a distributed Bragg reflector laser for single-frequency operation

A new mathematical algorithm for representing the phase delay on uniform fiber Bragg grating (FBG) reflection by a three-straight-line approximation has been developed to facilitate the mathematical treatment of the FBG response. The validity of the approximation is numerically demonstrated. By means of the developed algorithm, the mode equation in a distributed feedback reflector (DBR) linear cavity has been analytically solved, to the best of the author's knowledge, and thereby the single-mode operation of the cavity could be theoretically analyzed by tractable mathematics. It is found that the mode selectivity is dependent on the ratio of cavity spacing to FBG length, rather than the spacing itself. The developed algorithm numerically has revealed the mode selectivities that remain unknown in single-frequency DBR fiber laser studies to date. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America
