Location and size selection using hybrid Jaya-Luus-Jaakola algorithm for decentralized generations in distribution system considering demand-side management

In the distribution system, decentralized generation is incorporated to maximize the system reliability and economic stability, and to avoid redundancy in system. The efficient implementation of distributed-generations (DGs) in a distribution-system (DS) can be done by employing demand-side management (DSM). In this research proposal, location and size selection of DGs in a DS considering DSM is accomplished using a hybrid Jaya-Luus-Jaakola (JLJ) algorithm. The hybridization of Jaya algorithm (JA) with Luus-Jaakola algorithm (LJA) is done with a view to improving the rate of convergence of the algorithm. Three design objectives of minimization of active power loss and voltage deviation along with maximization of voltage stability index are considered in this research proposal. These design objectives under consideration are integrated together to form a problem of a single objective by assignments of weights. The formulated problem is minimized using proposed hybrid algorithm subjected to system constraints such as balance of power, limits on bus voltage and line capacity, and generation level of DGs. A static penalty is added to the formulated problem in case of any constraint violations. A photo-voltaic-based DG is used in the 33-bus standard radial-distribution-system (RDS). A DSM scenario is created by shifting some loads of peak hours to off-peak hours in view of minimizing the total cost of generation. The potency and superiority of the proposed algorithm is validated with the help of comparison of the results obtained by exploiting proposed method with results acquired from available state-of-art algorithms in literature. The comparison proves the comparative superior performance of the proposed algorithm.

Power Sharing in Solar PV: Microhydro Hybrid System Using Power Angle Control Strategy

The most crucial control challenge in the hybrid system is the frequency stability, especially when they are in the face of load-generation imbalance and numerous uncertainties. In this paper, the synchronverter (SV) based on a micro-hydropower system is proposed to handle the intermittent power output of solar photo-voltaic. The standalone microgrid is modeled in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Then, the power control form SV is performed using power angle control method. Several case studies are performed, and the simulation results show the dynamics of appropriate sharing of power for both the linear and nonlinear loads by the hybrid system. Both the frequency and total harmonic distortion of load voltage are kept within the standard limits. The application of SV shows a quick and smooth synchronization with micro-hydro. The change in irradiance level has been appropriately managed by power-sharing with micro-hydro to save the system from frequency imbalance during low light conditions. The power has been shared by providing an appropriate load angle between sources based on the irradiance level available at the time. Moreover, the dynamic response of the system's voltage, power, and frequency due to the induction motor load has also been studied.

The role and benefits of residential rooftop photovoltaic prosumers in Brazil

With the declining costs of photovoltaics (PV), a recent and widespread uptake of residential rooftop PV is underway in Brazil and many other sunbelt countries. Electricity consumers produce some or all their energy and become prosumers 1/4 producers thorn consumers. We present a method to evaluate the role and benefits of residential rooftop PV to prosumers and show a case-study using one of the 1250 PV-powered households in the "Celesc PV Bonus Project", promoted by the local distribution utility Celesc to demonstrate our method in Florian?opolis-Brazil. The methodology was divided into five principal stages: (i) Solar resource at the site;(ii) PV system performance indicators;(iii) Consumption profiles;(iv) CO2 emissions avoided and;(v) Comparative analysis between the individual PV rooftop case study with the average of PV households in the Florian?opolis region. From the utility's perspective, the annual electricity consumption was reduced by 18% after PV integration. From the prosumer's perspective, the total annual consumption increased by 8%. However, the annual reduction in electrical utility expenses was 54%. The adoption of rooftop PV in residential households in Brazil was demonstrated to be advantageous, and payback times are still on a downward trend due to the continuing price reductions experienced by the PV technology. Power system structure is becoming large and more complex to comprehend due to high demand for electrical energy caused by an increase population growth globally and the need for a balanced standard of living of citizenry. The inability of the Centralized generations (CGs) which are mainly from fossil fuels to meet this growing need has necessitated the need for distributed generations (DGs) from renewable energy sources to augment the existing system at the distribution level. Although, connecting these generators to an existing distribution system may create technical, economic, environsmental and regulatory challenges which may impact either positively or negatively on the distribution system with the power system stability as one of the major issues to be addressed. This paper, therefore, presents a review on the impact of distributed generation on power system stability. The results from the study indicated that earlier research on this field have centered their findings on parameters such as power losses, voltage profile, reliability, protection and stability of power system when distributed generations are injected into the distribution network using different types of software with only few studies using artificial intelligence and supervisory control and data acquisition system during the course of their research thereby creating a gap that must be filled.

distributed-generation (DG) facilities widely employ gas-turbine (GTU) and gas-piston (GPU) generator sets (GS) capable of islanded operation or running in parallel with the grid. This paper considers various operating conditions that may cause significant GS load throw and load-shedding that entails disconnecting and subsequent consumer power outage. Analysis reveals which GTU/GPU design features may result in damage and/or outage if the unit is exposed to external disturbances in the adjacent grid. It also demonstrates the efficiency of comprehensive solutions that use energy storage and variable-frequency motor-based drives to prevent GS damage and/or outage. Besides, the paper substantiates the need of, and proposes DG GS maneuverability requirements for more efficient use.

A Numerical Simulation of Horizontal Axis Hydrokinetic Turbine with and without Augmented Diffuser

The hydrodynamic analysis of a horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbine is carried out, using a 3rd-generation diffuser. The turbine constituted of three blades and a radius of 0.75 m, using the hydrodynamic profile NREL S822 for the design of both the blades and the housing of the 3rd generation diffuser. Two horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbine with and without diffuser were meshed and subsequently hydrodynamically simulated using the ANSYS CFX 18.2 (R) program in a transient state. As a result, the power coefficient (C-p) of the turbine was obtained with and without a diffuser, in addition to the velocity profile of each model. The maximum power coefficient (C-p,C-max) reached by the turbine with and without diffuser is 0.487 at a TSR of 9.948, and 0.285 at a TSR of 10.472, respectively, equivalent to an increase of 71% of C-p with respect to the turbine without diffuser, and 82.1% with relation to the Betz limit. Speeds are reached between 1.5 to 2.1 m/s and 1.5 to 1.8 m/s, upstream of the turbine with and without diffuser, respectively, and from 2.3 to 2.6 m/s and 1.8 to 2.1 m/s downstream of it, in the same order.

The fundamental roots of micro-grids are different types of renewable energy sources. There are two broad and distinctive control set ups for power systems. They are centralized and decentralized (hierarchical) controls. In market models of micro-grids there are normally groups of electricity sources and loads that operate in synch with a centralized grid or macro-grid. This paper studies the functionality and ideas of micro-grids. Then implementing Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model for the proposed micro-grid in very precise manner is established. It proposes general simulation modeling for micro-grid using MATLAB, Simulink and (ANN). Its goal is to connect between the most important parameters in DC-Microgrid and price. This modeling approach proposes general Modeling and simulation at more probable situations for variable values at each bus. The ANN model for the proposed range of Different parametric characteristics is presented for Extended Analysis on IEEE 14-Bus Test System. Finally, algebraic equations for the ANN model are deduced in order to optimize them in the future for optimal micro-grid's performance. The training, testing and validating data for this ANN model is extracted from a real micro-grid to connect between numbers of units at each DG source (distributed generation), Loads, Minimum/Maximum Power, Marginal Loss Factor and Time (Hour) over 24 hours as inputs, with Cost ($), Saving ($), Revenue ($), Profit ($) as outputs. So, it helps the humanity to understand more about renewable energy sources and techniques. Moreover, it presents an excellent model to predict the price and saving with this trend in power systems especially from the side of humans or customers. The work is useful for creating sustainable business model for energy access to energy deprived population. The paper's presentation includes examples and comparisons for approach's validity. Now, there is a running real-time validation for the work via OPAL real-digital-simulator.

UL1741 rules that to realize the islanding detection, the inverter must stop running within 2s after the main grid failure occurs. However, with the increasing of the capacity of distributed generation system, in order to guarantee the stability and reliability of power supply simultaneously, IEEE Std. 1547 proposed the concept that DG runs off-grid after islanding occurs. The concepts of the traditional islanding protection were attacked, the original islanding detection methods are no longer suitable for the flexible micro power grid operation system. This paper presents a new active islanding detection method which could suitable for micro-grid operation and control. The method, which under the premise of without destroying islanding operation conditions, fine-tunes the PWM modulation wave, realtime acquisition the voltage of point of common coupling, using the mathematical statistics method to extract the quadratic differential of the output voltage, according to the changes of the mathematical characteristic value in the grid connected mode and the islanding mode to judge if there was islanding occurred, and the theory basis of quantitative analysis of the disturbance quantity selection. Simulation and experiment results verify the correctness and feasibility of the proposed method.
