In this paper the boundary control of linear 2 x 2 hyperbolic systems with spatially-varying coefficients and dynamic boundary conditions is considered. This leads to the stabilization problem for a bidirectionally coupled PDE-ODE system. For its solution a twostep backstepping approach is developed, that yields the usual kernel equations and additional decoupling equations of simple form. The latter can be traced back to a Volterra integral equation of the second kind, which is directly solvable with a successive approximation. This paper introduces a new optimal H-infinity control framework for controlling vibration of flexible structures with spatially varying disturbance. The spatially distributed nature of disturbance is taken into account in control design by introducing the concept of spatial H-infinity norm for systems with spatially distributed input. A control design approach is then introduced to allow a systematic control design for controlling structural vibration caused by spatially distributed disturbance. Simulation studies on a flexible beam demonstrate that the proposed spatial control can minimise vibration for spatially varying bending moment disturbance.

This contribution presents a backstepping-based state feedback design for the tracking control of a two-phase Stefan problem which is encountered in the Vertical Gradient Freeze crystal growth process. A two-phase Stefan problem consists of two coupled free boundary problems and is a vital part of many crystal growth processes due to the time-varying extent of crystal and melt during growth. In addition, a different approach for the numerical approximation of the backstepping transformations kernel is presented. Copyright (C) 2020 The Authors.

An algebraic method to the fault detection for parabolic systems with distributed inputs and outputs is presented in this contribution. The modulation functions method is used to derive an algebraic expression for the fault detection, that only depends on known signals. This allows the detection of the absolute value of piecewise constant faults without a system approximation, despite the occurrence of disturbances. It is shown that the modulation function can be described by a distributed-parameter signal model with a distributed input. For its derivation a systematic approach is proposed, which involves the introduction of suitable in domain pointwise and boundary measurements. Then, the modulation function follows from solving a trajectory planning problem for its signal model. The results of the paper are illustrated for the actuator and sensor fault detection of a heat conductor. (C) 2017, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. The paper proposes a model-based control approach for thermal processing of silicon wafers such as rapid thermal processing. Heating of the wafer is achieved with a large number of high-power LEDs which enable targeted heating over the entire spatial domain. Taking advantage of this feature, a distributed PI controller is first designed assuming an idealized distributed input. This control signal is then approximated by the actual control that enters the system through shape functions using an optimization procedure. A formal analysis of the input-to-state stability with respect to the actuator error, extension with an anti-windup scheme and an experimental validation of the proposed approach are presented. This paper addresses state estimation for spatially distributed systems governed by linear partial differential equations from discrete in-space-and-time noisy measurements provided by sensors deployed over the spatial domain of interest. A decentralised and scalable approach is undertaken by decomposing the domain into overlapping subdomains assigned to different processing nodes interconnected to form a network. Each node runs a local finite-dimensional Kalman filter which exploits the finite element approach for spatial discretisation and the parallel Schwarz method to iteratively enforce consensus on the estimates and covariances over the boundaries of adjacent subdomains. The effectiveness of the proposed distributed consensus-based finite element Kalman filter is demonstrated via simulation experiments concerning a temperature estimation problem modelled by the bi-dimensional heat equation.

Backstepping design of robust state feedback regulators for parabolic PIDEs with in-domain outputs

This paper considers the robust output regulation problem for boundary controlled parabolic partial integro-differential equations (PIDEs) of Volterra type, where the output to be controlled is an in-domain distributed or pointwise output. By assuming a finite-dimensional model for the exogenous signals a constructive solution is presented by making use of the backstepping approach. For this, a new backstepping-based stabilization of parabolic PIDE-ODE cascades with an in-domain coupling is proposed. It is shown that the solvability of the output regulation problem can be checked by utilizing the nominal plant transfer behaviour. Robust output regulation is verified for model uncertainties, that do not lead to an unstable closed-loop system. The regulator design for a coupled parabolic/hyperbolic system illustrates the presented results. © 2017

A model based method for kick and loss detection and attenuation in Managed Pressure Drilling is presented. The drilling system is modeled as a distributed parameter system combined with a reservoir flow equation containing reservoir pressure and the so-called productivity index as uncertain parameters. A swapping-based design for state and parameter estimation utilizing bottom-hole pressure measurements available via wired drill pipe is combined with a closed loop controller for kick and loss attenuation. The performance of the proposed method is compared to earlier results on kick attenuation in a simulation, showing significant improvement. In this paper, we present an output feedback controller for systems consisting of n 2 × 2 semilinear hyperbolic systems in series interconnection where actuation and sensing are restricted to one boundary. The output-feedback control law consists of a state-feedback controller combined with an observer. The control and estimation laws are based on the dynamics on the characteristic lines of the hyperbolic system, and achieve stabilization of the origin or tracking at one location, and full state estimation, respectively, globally and in minimum time. We demonstrate the controller performance in a numerical example, and apply the controller to a relevant disturbance rejection problem in oil well drilling. © 2017

In this work an infinite dimensional system representation of a highly dissipative Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation (KSE) is been utilized in the model modal predictive control (MMPC) synthesis framework to achieve asymptotic stabilization of an unstable KS equation in the presence of input and point exerted state constraints. The KS equation is initially defined in an appropriate functional space setting and an exact transformation is used to reformulate the original boundary control problem as an abstract boundary control problem of the KSE partial differential equation (PDE). An appropriate discrete infinite dimensional representation of the abstract boundary control problem is used for synthesis of low dimensional model modal predictive controller (MMPC) incorporating both the pointwise enforced KSE state constraints and input constraints. The proposed control problem formulation and the performance of the closed-loop system in the full state-feedback controller realization have been evaluated through simulations.
