The field of application of aspheric optics is steadily expanding Aspheric surfaces can be found in photographic optics, astronomical optics and other optical systems that are now at the forefront of the optical science. The production of elements with aspherical surfaces is a very long and time-consuming process both from the design and the technological points of view. In CAE-systems the information is placed in accordance with the developed dialog interface and the traditions of a country / programming language and others. These data are specific for each program, which greatly complicates the processing of data. The purpose of this work is to investigate the possibility to automate the production of design documentation for optical elements with aspherical surfaces in accordance with international ISO standards It was decided to develop an application software package, embedded in the CAD-environment. The presented software package solves the problem of producing design documentation based on the data from such CAE-systems as OPAL PC and Zemax. The methodical material, developed during the research, contains information about work with parameters of aspherical surfaces in the CAE-systems indicated above. The design documentation must be complied in accordance with Russian standards and ISO 10110-12: 2007. Dialog windows of the software request all the data necessary for the release of drawings. The report presents different approaches of algorithmic solutions of the tasks, the dialog interface and examples of document automatic execution results.

A large number of tutorials for popular software development technologies are available online, and those about the same technology vary widely in their presentation. We studied the design of tutorials in the software documentation landscape for five popular programming languages: Java, C#, Python, Javascript, and Typescript. We investigated the extent to which tutorial pages, i.e. resources, differ and report statistics of variations in resource properties. We developed a framework for characterizing resources based on their distinguishing attributes, i.e. properties that vary widely for the resource, relative to other resources. Additionally, we propose that a resource can be represented by its resource style, i.e. the combination of its distinguishing attributes. We discuss three techniques for characterizing resources based on our framework, to capture notable and relevant content and presentation properties of tutorial pages. We apply these techniques on a data set of 2551 resources to validate that our framework identifies valid and interpretable styles. We contribute this framework for reasoning about the design of resources in the online software documentation landscape.

This report examines current research regarding effective document and interface design for users with varying levels of visual acuity. We argue for ongoing technical and professional communication (TPC) inclusive design practices that adopt a version of evidence-based practice (EBP) as a potentially effective approach towards optimizing research and development. We also discuss best practices and dynamic guidelines for building an encompassing accessibility experience that addresses a more complex set of user needs than is often considered. We focus on design issues affecting users with low vision in this study and detail an emerging research partnership with our local Veteran's Affairs Visual Impairment Specialist Team (VIST).

Providing usable instructional documentation to users requires understanding their needs and best ways to meet those needs. This article reviews the types of instructional documentation for users of the Grinbath EyeGuide eye tracking system and discusses the lessons learned from each iteration of instruction. Media richness played a major role in the effectiveness of the documentation, with richer media providing better instruction for the user.

This paper describes a desk study in which a user manual dating from 1925, describing how to operate a table loom, was verified for conformance to an ISO standard that lists requirements for software user documentation and was last revised in 2008. A remarkably high degree of conformance was established. It is discussed whether this is coincidental, or more fundamentally related to the way in which the documentation of software tools is regarded as quantitatively rather than qualitatively different from the documentation of physical tools. The paper concludes by making a case for academic research resulting in guidelines for software documentation that take into account the specific nature of software, and the specific problems that users encounter when working with software.

User documentation is a structurally under-valued aspect of information systems and end user assistance. Popular belief has it that documentation is required only where insufficient attention has been paid to the design of usability, user satisfaction and user experience;and that documentation is not referred to by users anyhow. Both lines of reasoning are shown to be faulty, and a case is made for an interest in user documentation from the pertinent research communities.

The ACT testing service had suspicions that their 16-page booklet, "Using Your ACT Results" was not well suited to today's high-school seniors. They enlisted the Seattle-based consultancy Blink Interactive to conduct user research with high school students in three cities. It was determined that (1) the students resisted the text-intensive design and that (2) there were nuggets of information that the high-school students would have found valuable, if they had found them. The study prompted a redesign in which expository text was in large part replaced by infographics and a narrative focused around the experience of an individual student. This project recommends ways in which information will need to be communicated to future generations of young readers.
