The effectiveness and sustainability of water utilities depend on minimizing water losses, with apparent losses due to metering inaccuracies having the greatest impact on revenue, billing accuracy, utility management, and resource planning. Ball valves are commonly used upstream and downstream of water meters, and in modern buildings, water meter rooms house meters arranged in a battery arrangement. Each meter is equipped with an upstream valve to shut off mains water and a downstream valve to prevent draining during replacement. Consumers often partially close the upstream valve to conserve water, particularly in areas with sufficient pressure. This study examines the effects of valve positioning and closure percentage on the behaviour of ultrasonic water meters, which are increasingly popular in the domestic market. Analysing meter behaviour under different closure percentages reveals that a 75% valve closure stops water volume registration, resulting in significant errors. These findings underscore the importance of carefully considering valve positioning and closure percentage to ensure accurate measurements, precise billing, revenue generation, resource optimization, and customer satisfaction.

Phosphorus is an element essential for life. Concerns regarding long-term security of supply and issues related to eutrophication of surface waters once released into the aquatic environment have led governments to consider and apply measures for reducing the use and discharge of phosphorus. Examples of source control include legislation to reduce phosphorus use in domestic detergents. This research shows that other domestic sources of phosphorus also contribute significantly to the domestic load to sewer and that overall, domestic sources dominate loads to sewage treatment works. Estimates provided here show that although the natural diet contributes 40% of the domestic phosphorus load, other potentially preventable sources contribute significantly to the estimated 44,000 tonnes of phosphorus entering UK sewage treatment works each year. In the UK, food additives are estimated to contribute 29% of the domestic load;automatic dishwashing detergents contribute 9% and potentially increasing;domestic laundry 14%, including contributions from phosphonates, but decreasing;phosphorus dosing to reduce lead levels in tap water 6%;food waste disposed of down the drain 1%;and personal care products 1%. Although UK data is presented here, it is anticipated that similar impacts would be expected for other developed economies. Consideration of alternatives to all preventable sources of phosphorus from these sources would therefore offer potentially significant reductions in phosphorus loads to sewage treatment works and hence to the aquatic environment. Combining all source control measures and applying them to their maximum extent could potentially lead to the prevention of over 22,000 tonnes-P/year entering sewage treatment works.

Accurate domestic-hot water (DHW) consumption information is useful for solar-thermal-hot-water-system designers and policy makers supporting solar-thermal-incentive programs. Conducting field studies of DHW-consumption patterns is difficult and costly, and as a result, there are few studies available in the body of literature. Several DHW models exist, however these aggregate models are often dated and most fail to identify the influence of the number of occupants in the dwelling, instead relying on a standard-per-capita consumption. The standard of 60 liters/capita/day (lcd) is found to be accurate for households of 4 or more occupants, but significantly under estimates per-capita-hot-water consumption for households with 3 or fewer occupants, consequently, under estimating the energy and GHG-emissions savings of solar-DHW programs [1]. The new estimate presented here addresses these issues. This study was conducted using utility-billing data, and occupant responses from a survey of 1594 residences. The data includes annual total-water use, energy consumption, costs, and basic information about the residence and occupants. The method isolates average-oil used in water heaters and then estimates system performance to calculate the volume of hot water heated. The findings include total-water use, oil consumption for water heating, and DHW use based on occupancy for households of 1 through 6 occupants. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

There is a growing body of evidence available to indicate that there is often a discrepancy between the in situ measured thermal performance of a building fabric and the steady-state predicted performance of that fabric, even when the building fabric has been modelled based upon what was actually built. However, much of the work that has been published to date does not fully investigate the validity of the assumptions within the model and whether they fully characterise the building. To investigate this issue, a typical pre-1920's UK house is modelled in Designbuilder in order to recognise and reduce the gap between modelled and measured energy performance. A model was first built to the specifications of a measured survey of the Salford Energy House, a facility which is housed in a climate controlled chamber. Electric coheating tests were performed to calculate the building's heat transfer coefficient;a difference of 18.5% was demonstrated between the modelled and measured data, indicating a significant prediction gap'. Accurate measurements of air permeability and U-value were made in-situ;these were found to differ considerably from the standard values used in the initial model. The standard values in the model were modified to reflect these in-situ measurements, resulting in a reduction of the performance gap to 2.4%. This suggests that a better alignment between the modelling and measurement research communities could lead to more accurate models and a better understanding of performance gap issues.
