Short term load forecasting is an essential part of electric power system planning and operation. The fundamental problem is how to represent the time series data in load forecasting. One of the common approaches is coding, that is transforming the time series to another domain. This paper presents a novel dynamic coding method for time series. The method integrates the whole series information and the position of each point to present the trend of the time series. The method can enhance and smooth the global features by dynamic adjusting the weights;such improve the performance of the similarity calculation for time series. The method has been evaluated on the short term load forecasting, the main application of time series processing. The experimental results have shown that this method provides accurate predictions.

In this paper, we study stealthy cyber-attacks on actuators of cyber-physical systems(CPS), namely zero dynamics and controllable attacks. In particular, under certain assumptions, we investigate and propose conditions under which one can execute zero dynamics and controllable attacks in the CPS. The above conditions are derived based on the Markov parameters of the CPS and elements of the system observability matrix. Consequently, in addition to outlining the number of required actuators to be attacked, these conditions provide one with the minimum system knowledge needed to perform zero dynamics and controllable cyber-attacks. As a countermeasure against the above stealthy cyber-attacks, we develop a dynamic coding scheme that increases the minimum number of the CPS required actuators to carry out zero dynamics and controllable cyber-attacks to its maximum possible value. It is shown that if at least one secure input channel exists, the proposed dynamic coding scheme can prevent adversaries from executing the zero dynamics and controllable attacks even if they have complete knowledge of the coding system. Finally, two illustrative numerical case studies are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and capabilities of our derived conditions and proposed methodologies.

The visual system can be considered as a multi-layered and dynamic image processing system. According to experimental evidence, the receptive field (RF) organization is characterized by spatio-temporal properties. The modified extended Gabor (MEG) function model was proposed to describe the main spatio-temporal properties of RF at different levels of visual pathway. Based on the MEG model, a three-layered dynamic coding model was constructed for a complex cell. The responses of the complex cell depend on synaptic events from a simple cell assembly within a time window. The membrane potential evolution equation was applied to the analysis of the length of a time window. Working memory involves the short-term maintenance of information and is critical in many tasks. The neural circuit dynamics underlying working memory remain poorly understood, with different aspects of prefrontal cortical (PFC) responses explained by different putative mechanisms. By mathematical analysis, numerical simulations, and using recordings from monkey PFC, we investigate a critical but hitherto ignored aspect of working memory dynamics: information loading. We find that, contrary to common assumptions, optimal loading of information into working memory involves inputs that are largely orthogonal, rather than similar, to the late delay activities observed during memory maintenance, naturally leading to the widely observed phenomenon of dynamic coding in PFC. Using a theoretically principled metric, we show that PFC exhibits the hallmarks of optimal information loading. We also find that optimal information loading emerges as a general dynamical strategy in task-optimized recurrent neural networks. Our theory unifies previous, seemingly conflicting theories of memory maintenance based on attractor or purely sequential dynamics and reveals a normative principle underlying dynamic coding.

For over 45 years, neuroscientists have conducted experiments aimed at understanding the neural basis of working memory. Early results examining individual neurons highlighted that information is stored in working memory in persistent sustained activity where neurons maintained elevated firing rates over extended periods of time. However, more recent work has emphasized that information is often stored in working memory in dynamic population codes, where different neurons contain information at different periods in time. In this paper, I review findings that show that both sustained activity as well as dynamic codes are present in the prefrontal cortex and other regions during memory delay periods. I also review work showing that dynamic codes are capable of supporting working memory and that such dynamic codes could easily be "readout" by downstream regions. Finally, I discuss why dynamic codes could be useful for enabling animals to solve tasks that involve working memory. Although additional work is still needed to know definitively whether dynamic coding is critical for working memory, the findings reviewed here give insight into how different codes could contribute to working memory, which should be useful for guiding future research.

The lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC) plays crucial roles in executive functions, including working memory and behavioral planning. The functions of lPFC require conservation of its limited neuronal resources. Herein, we examined lPFC neuronal activities in monkeys during a path-planning task that required behavioral planning and working memory. We analyzed the codingdynamics of final-goal neurons, and found selective and sustained activities toward the final goal, reflecting working memory. Putative excitatory pyramidal neurons shifted their scheme from discrete to collective coding during the preparatory period of the task, whereas inhibitory interneurons used a collective coding scheme.

This paper presents the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) proposal to MPEG-4 video coding standardization activity [1]. The proposed technique is based on a novel approach to audio-visual data compression entitled dynamic coding, The newly born multimedia environment supports a plethora of applications which cannot be covered adequately by a single compression technique. dynamic coding offers the opportunity to combine several compression techniques and segmentation strategies. Given a particular application, these two degrees of freedom can be constrained and assembled in order to produce a particular profile which meets the set of specifications dictated by the application. The basic principles of this approach are presented together with the data representation system. The major characteristics of dynamic coding are reviewed, along with simulation results showing the performance of such an approach in a very low bit-rate video coding environment.

The multihop ridesharing system generates a ridematching solution with an arbitrary number of transfers that respects personal preferences of the users and their time constraints with detour willingness. As it is considered to be NP-complete, an efficient metaheuristic is required in the application to solve the dynamic multihop ridematching problem. In this context, a novel approach, called Metaheuristics Approach Based on Controlled Genetic Operators (MACGeO), which is supported by an original dynamic coding, is developed to address the multihop ridematching problem. The performance of the proposed approach is measured via simulation scenarios, which feature various numbers of carpool drivers (vehicles) and riders (passengers). Experimental results show that the multihop ridematching could greatly increase the number of matched requests while minimizing the number of vehicles required.
