The definition of functions of complex system, like aircraft system, is the first step in a complex system design. The relationship between functions determines all of the behaviors of system. However, the relationship between aircraft functions of previous functional model is static, which means that it is not able to have a deeper analysis of aircraft level functions and the dynamic functional relationship. Finding a method that can model dynamic aircraft system is therefore necessary. This paper presents the results of a research study related to the application of functional modeling and design optimization methods in a Model Based System Engineering Environment. Therefore, the simulation is set to verify that the specified requirements are satisfied by the system model and optimized after a proper selection of the design variables for the aircraft system under analysis. Furthermore, a sample case study of an aircraft functional modeling is presented and the discussion on how to combine the client requirement and design capabilities is given.
