An efficient dynamic load balancing algorithm

In engineering problems, randomness and uncertainties are inherent. Robust design procedures, formulated in the framework of multi-objective optimization, have been proposed in order to take into account sources of randomness and uncertainty. These design procedures require orders of magnitude more computational effort than conventional analysis or optimum design processes since a very large number of finite element analyses is required to be dealt. It is therefore an imperative need to exploit the capabilities of computing resources in order to deal with this kind of problems. In particular, parallel computing can be implemented at the level of metaheuristic optimization, by exploiting the physical parallelization feature of the nondominated sorting evolution strategies method, as well as at the level of repeated structural analyses required for assessing the behavioural constraints and for calculating the objective functions. In this study an efficient dynamic load balancing algorithm for optimum exploitation of available computing resources is proposed and, without loss of generality, is applied for computing the desired Pareto front. In such problems the computation of the complete Pareto front with feasible designs only, constitutes a very challenging task. The proposed algorithm achieves linear speedup factors and almost 100% speedup factor values with reference to the sequential procedure.

The existing dynamic load balancing algorithms usually monitor load on servers and allocate requests to the least loaded server. But load between monitoring intervals is unknown because the monitoring is not real-time. And most of them can not differentiate services. This paper proposes a predictive dynamic load balancing algorithm which takes services types into consideration. The scheduler monitors resource utilization and number of active requests in each server. Considering service's preference for different resources, the average resource overhead of each service can be calculated using multiple reverse differentials. During request allocation, the appropriate server node is chosen to achieve optimal load balancing. Moreover, the resource utilization of each server node between monitoring intervals can be real-time predicted. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve shorter response time, fewer failed requests and more balanced load compared with existing dynamic load balancing algorithms.

With the migration of computational powers and applications to the cloud, Data Center Networks (DCNs) have become the backbone of the underlying infrastructure. Operation of the data centers relies on huge computational resources and bandwidth, that often undergo high operational costs, frequent link congestions, and imbalanced traffic loads. Software Defined Networking (SDN) based traffic load management improves accessing resources by distributing traffic among multiple paths efficiently and in a timely manner. In data centers, SDN-based traffic management techniques control paths of incoming flows and optimize flows during their transmissions. In this paper, we propose an SDN-based dynamic load management algorithm for optimizing link utilization in DCNs while considering the flow priority. The algorithm finds the shortest paths from each host to others and calculates every link's cost. When congestion occurs in a certain path, it replaces the old path with the alternative best route that has the minimum link cost and lower traffic flow. Performance of the algorithm is evaluated by measuring throughput, delay and packets loss in a fat-tree DCN. Simulation results show improved performance in load balancing over time as the algorithm keeps on running.

The problem of load balancing for parallelized particle simulations implemented on MIMD machines is discussed and a simple dynamic load balancing algorithm is introduced. Furthermore a mapping to a deterministic cellular automaton is given which allows detailed studies of this algorithm. In particular it is shown that for strip decomposition, the time, tau, need for the system to convergence from an initially unbalanced state to a well balanced state grows like tau alpha P-alpha, with P being the number of processors and alpha = 0.089 +/- 0.009. This convergence time can be considered 'fast', enabling this algorithm to track fluctuations in the particle density as the simulation progresses.
