This paper presents and analyzes the visual assessment process of the MPEG Call for Proposals (CfP) for dynamic mesh coding. The subjective evaluation for this type of data requires an adapted evaluation. In the CfP, a common rendering process of video sequences is applied according to camera paths which are not revealed to the proponents. The formal visual evaluation is performed on the rendered video sequences following the well-established DCR/DSIS protocol. This approach asserts a transparent process, a fair treatment of all proposals, and reproducible MOS results. This is demonstrated by a narrow range of confidence intervals (maximum 0.59) of the resulting MOS. The MOS results are further analyzed with respect to objective metrics used in the context of the CfP as well as objective metrics computed from the rendered video sequences. The results underline the challenges in the relation between objective metrics and MOS. Metrics including texture information are shown to perform better than purely geometry-based approaches. The metrics computed on the rendered video sequences show a generally higher correlation with MOS, VMAF performing best in this category.

The video-based dynamic mesh coding (V-DMC) standard is a cutting-edge technology for the compression of dynamic mesh data. V-DMC enables parallel encoding and partial decoding by introducing submesh frameworks in which dynamic meshes are separated and independently processed. However, V-DMC may raise submesh boundary errors like holes due to misaligning the existence or coordinates of vertices, degrading the objective and subjective qualities of decoded dynamic meshes. To minimize the boundary errors and improve the coding performance, we propose a two-stage boundary error correction method in V-DMC's preprocessing and encoding/decoding stages. Specifically, the first stage rearranges the preprocessing order to minimize boundary errors, whereas the second stage fills holes based on boundary information. Experimental results show that the proposed method can minimize the boundary errors among the V-DMC decoded meshes, and thus significantly improve the objective and subjective quality compared to the V-DMC reference software.

The emerging Video-based dynamic mesh coding (V-DMC) standard is designed on the concepts of subdivision surfaces and the lifting scheme. Subdivision surfaces generate different levels-of-detail (LoD) that enable to decode and render a dynamic mesh sequence at different resolutions. The initial specifications of V-DMC only supported the use of the midpoint subdivision method, that is applied to a so-called base mesh, which is a decimated version of the input dynamic mesh sequence frame being processed. Geometry details, capturing the difference between the subdivided mesh and the original mesh are added after the mesh subdivision and are called displacements. While the midpoint subdivision has the benefit of a low complexity, it also generates large displacement data as subdivided vertices lie on the respective planes of the base mesh triangles. In this paper, we present the adaptation of three subdivision methods to V-DMC: Loop, Least Square Subdivision Surfaces (LS3), and Butterfly. We show that combining different subdivision methods at different LoDs results in significant compression performance gains.

Rate-distortion-optimized predictive compression of dynamic 3D mesh sequences

Compression of computer graphics data such as static and dynamic 3D meshes has received significant attention in recent years, since new applications require transmission over channels and storage on media with limited capacity. This includes pure graphics applications (virtual reality, games) as well as 3DTV and free viewpoint video. Efficient compression algorithms have been developed first for static 3D meshes, and later for dynamic 3D meshes and animations. Standard formats are available for instance in MPEG-4 3D mesh compression for static meshes, and Interpolator Compression for the animation part. For some important types of 3D objects, e.g. human head or body models, facial and body animation parameters have been introduced. Recent results for compression of general dynamic meshes have shown that the statistical dependencies within a mesh sequence can be exploited well by predictive coding approaches. Coders introduced so far use experimentally determined or heuristic thresholds for tuning the algorithms. In video coding, rate-distortion (RD) optimization is often used to avoid fixed thresholds and to select the optimum prediction mode. We applied these ideas and present here an RD-optimized dynamic 3D mesh coder. It includes different prediction modes as well as an RD cost computation that controls the mode selection across all possible spatial partitions of a mesh to find the clustering structure together with the associated prediction modes. The general coding structure is derived from statistical analysis of mesh sequences and exploits temporal as well as spatial mesh dependencies. To evaluate the coding efficiency of the developed coder, comparative coding results for mesh sequences at different resolutions were carried out. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The emerging Video-based dynamic mesh coding standard is designed on the concepts of subdivision surfaces and the lifting scheme applied to a simplified variant of a dynamic mesh. Those processes create displacement data, i.e., residual information that is hierarchically predicted through each subdivision iteration, that is then coded using traditional 2D video codecs. The current draft of the standard defines the packing of the displacement data in a video frame in a way that does not support adaptations based on Level-of-Detail (LoD). In this paper, we describe and evaluate an experimental LoD adaptive displacement packing method that could be used to optimize bandwidth consumption or to save computational complexity and battery at the client side. We show that a modified packing of the displacement video data and a LoDadaptive selection of lifting parameters, combined with HEVC motion constrained tile sets provide this functionality with a low impact on compression performance. The LoD adaptive displacement packing method described in this paper has been recently adopted into the V-DMC standard specifications.

This paper presents the first implementation of temporal scalability in the ongoing standard for Video-based dynamic mesh coding (V-DMC), a crucial enhancement that enables bitstream adaptation to diverse network conditions and device capabilities. While displacement and texture, two of the V-DMC's sub-bitstreams, already benefit from existing video codec temporal scalability, the non-video basemesh sub-bitstream lacks this feature. To address this gap, we propose an adaptive coding structure designed for the basemesh. Moreover, we propose a novel cost function to adaptively select the frame type between intra-frame and inter-frame in this coding structure. Our experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in coding efficiency compared to the original V-DMC, i.e., the total BD-rates of D1, D2, Luma, Cb, and Cr averaged across all eight test sequences are -15.1%, -15.0%, 0.3%, -9.9%, and -8.4%, respectively.

The inter-frame coding of dynamic meshes with time varying topology is still under development in the current Video-based dynamic mesh coding (V-DMC) standard. To address this issue and improve the coding efficiency, we propose a temporally-consistent re-meshing method. In particular, we introduce a robust inter-surface mapping framework to re-mesh the input meshes so that they have one-to-one vertex and face correspondence. Then, we simultaneously decimate the re-meshed input meshes to generate temporally-consistent base meshes, which is a key requirement for applying inter-frame coding in V-DMC. The evaluations on Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) test sequences demonstrate that our method can achieve rate-distortion performance superior to that of V-DMC.

The Video-based dynamic mesh coding (V-DMC) standard exploits the temporal correlation by tracing the motions of the vertices, which applies only to tracked frames with one-to-one vertex correspondence. For non-tracked frames, only intra mode is applied. This paper proposes an embedded graph representation method that can efficiently represent inter-frame differences for both tracked and non-tracked frames. First, we construct an embedded graph by simplifying the given mesh. Then, we compute a set of affine transformations on graph nodes and use their linear combinations to represent the inter-frame difference. Finally, we apply our implementation to increase the number of predicted frames (P-frames) and thus improve the resulting coding performance. Evaluations on Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) test sequences demonstrate the significant rate distortion improvements achieved by our method over V-DMC. The proposed method is highly compliant with V-DMC, and a part of it has been adopted into the V-DMC reference software during the MPEG-3DGH 144th meeting.

Standardization of dynamic mesh coding (V-DMC) has been progressing in MPEG since 2022. The current reference software for V-DMC encodes dynamic meshes by segmenting them into regions (submeshes) and correcting holes occurring at submesh boundaries based on submesh boundary information. However, the encoding performance of submesh boundary information is low in V-DMC because it does not utilize the temporal correlation of submesh boundary information. To address this issue, we propose an inter-coding method for submesh boundary information using reference frame submesh boundary information. Experimental results show that our proposal improves coding performance compared to conventional methods.
