dynamic visualization by GeoGebra for mathematics learning: a meta-analysis of 20 years of research

GeoGebra is an open-source software package for supporting mathematics teaching and learning. It enables a dynamic visualization approach that is beneficial for students' mathematics learning. However, few studies comprehensively investigate the effectiveness of GeoGebra as a scaffolding tool to achieve dynamic visualization in mathematics since its release. To fill this gap, we carried out a meta-analysis of studies examining the use of GeoGebra software for students' mathematics achievement since it was initially published in 2002 until 2022. Nineteen effect sizes were synthesized from fourteen studies in the last two decades, with a total of 1,334 participants. The analysis results demonstrated a positive medium-to-large effect (Hedges's g = 0.653) of GeoGebra as a dynamic visualization tool for improving students' mathematics achievement. Topic, treatment duration, and sample size were significant moderators of the effect size, suggesting that GeoGebra as a scaffolding for dynamic visualization is more effective when implemented with fewer participants (i.e. less than 50), for a short period (i.e. within four weeks), and in the topics of calculus and geometry than other conditions. Location, grade level, publication year, learning theory, group work, and student operation did not show significant moderating effects. Pedagogical implications of the findings for students, teachers, and educational researchers and practitioners are discussed.

Target-switchable nanoprobe based on BRD4 inhibition for induction and dynamic visualization of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway

The exploration of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway in living cells is of great significance for achieving tumor diagnosis and treatment. However, visualization of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway induced by specific proteins has rarely been reported. In this paper, we designed and synthesized a fluorescent probe Cy-JQ1 based on the bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4) inhibition. Cy-JQ1 can affect mitochondrial electron chain transfer and reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential, effectively activating the Bcl-2/Bax/caspase-3 signaling pathway at a concentration of 500 nM and then triggering cell apoptosis. Due to its high specificity and excellent fluorescence properties, the switching of Cy-JQ1 from mitochondria to endoplasmic reticulum could be observed. The difference in fluorescence intensity along the perinuclear aggregates could be well defined as Delta XOR and used as a sensitive indicator of apoptosis. Upon conjugating with polyethylene glycol (PEG) containing disulfide bonds, the performance of the formed nanoprobe (Cy-JQ1-S-S-M) is further enhanced by improving pharmacokinetics and tumor-specific accumulation. This study provides a new analytical method for the dynamic visualization of mitochondria-induced apoptosis pathways triggered by specific proteins, as well as for the development of apoptosis-related target drugs.

Fluid-assisted injection molding technology, including gas-assisted molding and water-assisted molding, has been widely used to manufacture plastic parts in recent years, due to its light weight, relatively low resin cost per part and faster cycle time. This report is devoted to studying the filling phenomena of fluid-assisted injection moldings by using a dynamic visualization technique. Experiments were carried out on an 80-ton injection-molding machine equipped with gas and water injection systems. The material used was semi-crystalline polypropylene. A flow visualization mold was specially designed and made for this study. A high-speed video camera was used to record the mold filling phenomena of rectangular cavities with different channel geometries and layouts: a flat plate, a plate with two zones of different depths, a plate with symmetrical ribs and a plate with fishbone ribs. The interaction between the assisting media and the polymer melt during molding was observed, and insight into the penetration behavior of the fluid was summarized. In addition, comparisons were made between the mold-filling process by gas-assisted injection molding and water-assisted injection molding. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

dynamic visualization of ultraviolet dose on skin with sunscreen applied using minimum erythema dose

Background Visualizing the ultraviolet (UV) dose on skin serve as an intuitive approach to ensure appropriate sunscreen usage and reduce the risk of erythema. UV dose is determined by a number of external factors, such as properties of sunscreens, weather, and type of outdoor activity. We propose a framework for visualizing UV doses that considers various external factors. Materials and methods First, the skin of a three-dimensional human model was represented using triangular meshes, and various static postures and dynamic motions were simulated to express outdoor activities. Then, we evaluated the persistency and insufficiency properties of sunscreen, which are time dependent and directly affect the effectiveness of the sunscreen skin protection factor (SPF) during UV exposure. Finally, to calculate the UV dose in real time, we tracked the trajectory of the sun and motion of the skin while considering the time-dependent properties of sunscreen. Results An S/W system was implemented based on the proposed framework to visualize the distribution of UV doses through dynamic color changes in exposed skin areas. The color types include true colors, which represent the minimum erythema dose (MED), and pseudo colors representing states before 1 MED is reached. We devised various examples to discuss the usability of the proposed framework. Conclusion The system conveniently displays the MED according to an individual's skin phototype. When the properties of a wide range of commercial sunscreens are added to the system database, it is expected that the rate of appropriate sunscreen usage by customers will increase.

Using ultrashort pulsed optical excitation and interferometric detection, we dynamically image ultrahigh-frequency surface acoustic phonon wavepackets on two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystals. The samples consist of a square lattice of air-filled holes etched in a silicon substrate. Good agreement is found when compared with time-domain finite element numerical simulations. By Fourier transformation, the dispersion relation is derived and stop bands are revealed. The spatial distributions of the acoustic eigenmodes at specific frequencies are also presented.

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things and smart wearable devices, there is an increasing demand for motion capture and image recognition technology. This study aims to develop an optical motion capture system based on wearable devices of the Internet of Things to achieve accurate recognition and dynamic visual simulation of dance movements. This paper uses a motion capture technique based on optical principle. First, multiple optical sensors were installed on the wearable device to capture the dancers' movements. Then through the image recognition algorithm, the image is processed and analyzed to extract the dancers' posture and movement information. Finally, through the simulation algorithm, the captured dancers' movements are transformed into dynamic visualizations in real time. The experimental results show that the system can accurately capture and identify the movements of different dancers and provide high-quality dynamic visualizations. Through the system, dancers can observe their movements in real time, check and improve dance skills, and improve the quality of dance performance.

One of the approaches applied in data analysis is related to the theory of concept lattices, also known as Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), which is suitable for processing and analysis of object- attribute input data models. Concept lattice represents hierarchically organized structure of clusters of objects (concepts) based on the presence of their shared attributes. While basic FCA framework works only with binary input data tables, several approaches were introduced in order to process fuzzy attributes. The model of Generalized One- Sided Concept Lattices (GOSCL) is suitable to work with different types of attributes used in input data tables, which helped in understanding and interpretation of analysis. One of the main issues which remains is large number of concepts for visualization to user. The solution is to provide user with the reduction methods and advanced dynamic visualization of concept lattices and their reductions. In this paper we introduce and compare some of the implemented visualizations and reductions applied to concept lattices generated from input data.

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) played a key role in the immune system to destroy the tumor cells. Although some mechanisms of CTLs killing the tumor cells are revealed already, the dynamic information of CTLs interaction with tumor cells are still not known very clearly. Here we used confocal microscopy to visualize the whole process of CTLs killing the tumor cells in vitro. The imaging data showed that CTLs destroyed the target tumor cells rapidly and efficiently. Several CTLs surrounded one or some tumor cells and the average time for CTLs destroying one tumor cell is just a few minutes in vitro. The study displayed the temporal events of CTLs interacting with tumor cells at the beginning and finally killing them and directly presented the efficient tumor cell cytotoxicity of the CTLs. The results helped us to deeply understand the mechanism of the CTLs destroying the tumor cells and to develop the cancer immunotherapy.

Many business data applications involve several hierarchies reflecting inherent structure of the underlying domains. Often, these hierarchies are presented in a spreadsheet like format, showing a single hierarchy in a tabular form with drill down and roll up capabilities. Although this approach works for simple hierarchies and small data sets, they tend to break as the hierarchies become more complex or the size of data set increases. An alternative approach, which has the potential to work equally well with complex hierarchies and large data sets, is to devise a visualization front-end for dynamically altering and displaying views of data under user control. Toward this end, we have developed a prototype of a visualization tool to view large financial data sets which typically involve multiple hierarchies. The tool not only acts as a data presentation medium, but also serves as a graphical means to form complex queries and interact with data Its presentation structure uses hierarchical labels, which may be drilled down or rolled up, and displayable cell objects, which may have arbitrary complexity. Its data interface allows users to select data of interest, map data parameters to visual attributes, set threshold values to focus on interesting data, and read data values associated with cell objects.

Scenario simulation plays an integral role in the development, application, and management of intelligent vehicles. However, planning agents and customizing scenarios for complex systems are laborious, making it challenging to implement high-performance simulations. The striking progress made by Sora, a large-scale text-to-video model, suggests a research opportunity for high-performance simulation through dynamic visualizations. This paper reports the prospective effects of Sora on the scenario simulation of intelligent vehicles. Specifically, we review the achievements of Sora, picture the perspectives of artificiofactual experiments on intelligent vehicles based on the performance of Sora-type techniques, and discuss how far are we now.
