Many link formation mechanisms for the evolution of social networks have been successful to reproduce various empirical findings in social networks. However, they have largely ignored the fact that individuals make decisions on whether to create links to other individuals based on cost and benefit of linking, and the fact that individuals may use perception of the network in their decision making. In this paper, we study the evolution of social networks in terms of perception-based strategic link formation. Here each individual has her own perception of the actual network, and uses it to decide whether to create a link to another individual. An individual with the least perception accuracy can benefit from updating her perception using that of the most accurate individual via a new link. This benefit is compared to the cost of linking in decision making. Once a new link is created, it affects the accuracies of other individuals' perceptions, leading to a further evolution of the actual network. As for initial actual networks, we consider both homogeneous and heterogeneous cases. The homogeneous initial actual network is modeled by Erdos-Renyi (ER) random networks, while we take a star network for the heterogeneous case. In any cases, individual perceptions of the actual network are modeled by ER random networks with controllable linking probability. Then the stable link density of the actual network is found to show discontinuous transitions or jumps according to the cost of linking. As the number of jumps is the consequence of the dynamical complexity, we discuss the effect of initial conditions on the number of jumps to find that the dynamical complexity strongly depends on how much individuals initially overestimate or underestimate the link density of the actual network. For the heterogeneous case, the role of the highly connected individual as an information spreader is also discussed. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The dynamical complexity and stochastic resonance (SR) of a time-delayed asymmetric bistable system are studied. Firstly, The effective potential function and steady-state probability density function are deduced based on Born-Oppenheimer approximation theory, and we find that the asymmetric item and time-delayed feedback item can both affect the curve of these two functions, especially the asymmetric item can induce phase displacement. Secondly, the mean first-passage time (MFPT) which plays an important role in research on particles escape rate is derived and we obtain an approximate asymmetric item r which can maintain a steady MFPT. Finally, the influences of different parameters on SR are researched by signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The analytic expression of SNR is derived and three dimensional graphs and contour maps of SNR with different parameters are obtained. The results indicate that time delay tau and time delay strength e can enhance the SNR and the asymmetric item r has a non-monotone effect on SNR. Notably, adjusting time delay strength e is more sensitive than that of the time delay tau in controlling SR. (C) 2016 The Physical Society of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Factors leading to chaotic dynamics in metapopulation are studied, including Allee effect, rescue effect and overcrowding effect. We use theoretical bifurcation diagram and lattice simulation to investigate the dynamics of metapopulation in time and space. The influence of habitat destruction on the complexity of dynamics, which can decrease the fraction of suitable patches and induce the change of colonization rate and extinction rate, is also discussed. The whole scene of the implicit relationship between dynamical complexity and metapopulation persistence is given, which has five primary results. First, metapopulation persistence reaches the maximum at moderate dynamical complexity, which can occur at moderate intensity of habitat destruction. Second, the intensity of habitat destruction can be approximated by the dynamical complexity because the habitat destruction regulates the dynamics. Third, Allee effects can amazingly regulate dynamics and improve the persistence slightly before extinction. Fourth, rescue effects stabilize dynamics and improve persistence. Finally, overcrowding effect is the key to incur chaos and increase the dynamical complexity, and to improve the persistence of metapopulations. Anyway, there is no uniform correlation between dynamical complexity and metapopulation persistence. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Characterization of joint dynamics of multivariate financial time series calls for the analysis based on joint intrinsic temporal and information-theoretic scales. Yet a rigorous account of dynamical complexity of such time series is hampered by the univariate natures and mathematical artefacts associated with the existing methods. To that end, we employ multivariate multiscale entropy (MMSE) in order to associate multivariate complexity with long-range correlations, direct and indirect couplings, and synchronies among the data channels. Simulations on major stock indices support the approach.

The dynamical complexity of a typical nonlinear system will be clarified in this paper. These stochastic symbolic sequences bear three features. The distribution of frequency, inter-occurrence times, the first passage time and the r-th passage time are discussed carefully. Especially, one introduces ordinal passage time and gives certain distribution functions in this typical nonlinear system. Finally, the visitation density function is obtained by Frobenius-Perron(F-P) operator P.

Low latitude ionospheric TEC responses to dynamical complexity quantifiers during transient events over Nigeria

In this study, the values of chaoticity and dynamical complexity parameters for some selected storm periods in the year 2011 and 2012 have been computed. This was done using detrended TEC data sets measured from Birnin-Kebbi, Torro and Enugu global positioning system (GPSb receiver stations in Nigeria. It was observed that the significance of difference (SD) values were mostly greater than 1.96 but surprisingly lower than 1.96 in September 29, 2011. The values of the computed SD were also found to be reduced in most cases just after the geomagnetic storm with immediate recovery a day after the main phase of the storm while the values of Lyapunov exponent and Tsallis entropy remains reduced due to the influence of geomagnetic storms. It was also observed that the value of Lyapunov exponent and Tsallis entropy reveals similar variation pattern during storm period in most cases. Also recorded surprisingly were lower values of these dynamical quantifiers during the solar flare event of August 8th and 9th of the year 2011. The possible mechanisms responsible for these observLions were further discussed in this work. However, our observations show that the ionospheric effects of some other possible transient events other than geomagnetic storms can also be revealed by the variation of chaoticity and dynamical complexity. From healthy to pathology through a fall in dynamical complexity of involuntary oscillations of the human hand

The task is to estimate quantitative features in involuntary oscillations of shaking (tremor) of fingers accompanied the performance of the motor task by healthy subjects, patients with Parkinson' disease and individuals with the essential tremor. For solving the task the tremor patterns are examined by the wavelet-transform modulus maxima method and the recurrence quantification analysis. The physiological tremor is characterized by the minimal energy of the wavelet spectrum, the maximal degree of multifractality, the minimal degree of determinism and the maximal recurrence time density entropy, reflecting the greatest uncertainty of the period value. During the essential tremor the significant enhancement of the wavelet spectrum energy and the decrease of the dynamical complexity of involuntary oscillations are observed. It is evident as the fall in the multifractality degree, the growth of determinism in recurrence plots, the decrease of the recurrence time density entropy and the emergence of unstable periodic orbits in involuntary oscillations. For the parkinsonian tremor all the trends are enhanced that lead to more definite dynamics of patterns. Therefore, our results demonstrate that the dynamical complexity of patterns of involuntary oscillations decreases in larger degree for Parkinson' disease, than for patients with the syndrome of the essential tremor, that is, it declines with increasing the severity degree of motor disorders. The results obtained for the first time can be applied for evaluating the degree of deviation of the motor function from the healthy one. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Permutation transition entropy: Measuring the dynamical complexity of financial time series

In this paper, we propose a new approach to measure the dynamical complexity of a single time series. We characterize the changes of the states of the underlying system, by quantifying the Markov states transition between adjacent permutations. Unlike many static-complexity measures, the new method of permutation transition entropy (PTE) is able to identify the dynamical complexity with respect to the change of the temporal structure. With the numerical analyses, we show that the PTE can give the information that other methods, like the permutation entropy (PE), cannot. We apply the PTE method to the financial time series analysis, which reveals the existence of the momentum effect in the daily closing price and the daily trading volume of Chinese stock markets. It indicates that the dynamical complexity of these two indexes in stock markets is lower than that of the random time series. While the logarithm return and the logarithm change of trading volume show very similar PTE values with those of the random time series, which represents higher randomness. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Mechanisms of dynamical complexity changes in patterns of sensory neurons under antinociceptive effect emergence

The aim is to elucidate mechanisms of changes in dynamical complexity of impulse activity patterns of sensory neurons during the emergence of the antinociceptive response on the painful stimulus. To solve the problem we used the method of bifurcation analysis that enabled us to determine relations between parameters of the nociceptive neuron model and a type of the solution before and during the emergence of the antinociceptive effect. We have shown that the mechanism of the suppression of ectopic bursting discharges is the base for the changes in the dynamical complexity of patterns in the nociceptive neurons. Under the conditions of the potassium blocking, the molecular mechanism of suppression of these discharges can be connected entirely with the modification of the activation gating system of slow Na(V)1.8 sodium channels by the specific action of comenic acid that is a drug substance of a new non-opioid analgesic anoceptin. The obtained results explain one of the possible molecular mechanisms of the analgesic suppression of the neuropathic pain. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
