High confidence detection for moving target in aerial video

The moving target detection and tracking in aerial video is a challenge task because of its moving background, smaller target sizes, lower resolution and limited onboard computing resources. In this study, a high confidence detection method based on background compensation and three-frame-difference method is designed, which can detect moving objects in a dynamic background accurately. First, the authors use local feature extraction and matching for image registration and demonstrate that speed-up robust feature key points are suitable for the stabilisation task. Then, they estimate the global camera motion parameters using affine transformation which are obtained by the random sample consensus algorithm. Finally, they detect moving object by three-frame-difference method. As the detection results of the frame-difference method generally exists 'empty' and noise, in order to select the two higher-quality differential images to perform the logic AND operation, they add image quality assessment to the three-frame-difference method to obtain more accurate moving objects. Moreover, the edge detection algorithm and morphological processing are integrated together to further boost the overall detecting performance. The extensive empirical evaluations on aerial videos demonstrate that the proposed detector is very promising for the various challenging scenarios.

Assessment of blasting impacts on the discontinuities in a salt stope and pillar mine using a developed image processing

Salt rocks exhibit a complex mechanical behaviour by reflecting large deformations at low deviatoric stresses. Since the propagation and creation of cracks due to blasting can disrupt the mine safety and cause irreparable failures in underground spaces, it is important to assess the impacts of blasting on different parts of a salt stope and pillar mine after each blasting round. This study assessed the impacts of blasting operation on discontinuities in a salt stope and pillar mine by using a developed image processing-based methodology. Various photo samples were collected from different parts of the mine pillars and walls. Photographs were taken at four different blasting rounds before and after each round. The Sobel filter for edge detection was developed in Matlab, and the photographs were processed to assess the impacts of blasting on the discontinuities. The assessment was performed by comparing the processing results before and after each blasting round for the photographs. The effects of distance from blasting points, detonation direction and the amount of charge per each blasting round were considered in the assessment process. The amount of charge per blasting rounds and distance from the blasting points indicated higher effects than detonation directions. The assessment results indicated that the impacts of the blasting operation on the discontinuities decreased and became almost ineffective at distances greater than 30 m. Also, the points located at the end of the mine, as a closed space, experienced the greatest impact of the blasts.

Automated and unsupervised detection of malarial parasites in microscopic images

Background: Malaria is a serious infectious disease. According to the World Health Organization, it is responsible for nearly one million deaths each year. There are various techniques to diagnose malaria of which manual microscopy is considered to be the gold standard. However due to the number of steps required in manual assessment, this diagnostic method is time consuming (leading to late diagnosis) and prone to human error (leading to erroneous diagnosis), even in experienced hands. The focus of this study is to develop a robust, unsupervised and sensitive malaria screening technique with low material cost and one that has an advantage over other techniques in that it minimizes human reliance and is, therefore, more consistent in applying diagnostic criteria. Method: A method based on digital image processing of Giemsa-stained thin smear image is developed to facilitate the diagnostic process. The diagnosis procedure is divided into two parts;enumeration and identification. The image-based method presented here is designed to automate the process of enumeration and identification;with the main advantage being its ability to carry out the diagnosis in an unsupervised manner and yet have high sensitivity and thus reducing cases of false negatives. Results: The image based method is tested over more than 500 images from two independent laboratories. The aim is to distinguish between positive and negative cases of malaria using thin smear blood slide images. Due to the unsupervised nature of method it requires minimal human intervention thus speeding up the whole process of diagnosis. Overall sensitivity to capture cases of malaria is 100% and specificity ranges from 50-88% for all species of malaria parasites. Conclusion: Image based screening method will speed up the whole process of diagnosis and is more advantageous over laboratory procedures that are prone to errors and where pathological expertise is minimal. Application of fingerprint image fuzzy edge recognition algorithm in criminal technology

In the context of the rapid development of science and technology and the modernization of the legal system, criminal activities are becoming more and more intelligent and technological, which also puts forward higher requirements for criminal technology. The current criminal technology equipment is relatively backward, and the technical level is not high enough, resulting in a low utilization rate of trace material evidence extraction, which directly affects the role of criminal technology in the investigation and solving of cases. In recent years, fingerprint recognition algorithms and image edge detection algorithms have been widely used in various fields. This work studied the application of fingerprint image fuzzy edge recognition algorithm in criminal technology, in order to improve the level of criminal technology and the utilization rate of physical evidence extraction. The criminal technology system is upgraded and optimized by combining fingerprint recognition algorithm and image edge detection algorithm. And fuzzy theory is added to ensure the feasibility of the research. The experimental results show that the fuzzy edge recognition algorithm of fingerprint image can improve the level of criminal technology and the utilization rate of material evidence to a certain extent. The utilization rate is increased by 7.04%. The recognition accuracy of the fuzzy recognition method is also 13.2% higher than that of the methods in the literature.

This paper is the continuation of a work presented at ICORR 07, in which we discussed the possibility of improving eye-hand coordination in children diagnosed with this problem, using a robotic mapping from a haptic user interface to a virtual environment. Our goal is to develop, implement and refine a system that will assess and improve the eye-hand coordination and grip strength in children diagnosed with poor graphomotor skills. A detailed analysis of patters (e. g., labyrinths, letters and angles) was conducted in order to select three very distinguishable levels of difficulty that could be included in the system, and which would yield the greatest benefit in terms of assessment of coordination and strength issues as well as in training. Support algorithms (position, force, velocity, inertia and viscosity) were also developed and incorporated into the tasks in order to introduce general computer assistance to the mapping of the user's movements to the computer screen without overriding the user's commands to the robotic device. In order to evaluate performance (given by %accuracy and time) of the executed tasks, a sophisticated evaluation function was designed based on image analysis and edge detection algorithms. This paper presents the development of the haptic tasks, the various assistance algorithms, the description of the evaluation function and the results of a study implemented at the Motor Development Clinic at Cal Poly Pomona. The results (Accuracy and Time) of this function are currently being used as inputs to an Intelligent Decision Support System (described in [5]), which in turn, suggests the next task to be executed by the subject based on his/her performance.

A team of students at Southern Methodist University (SMU) is working with the U.S. Department of Defense (USDOD) to improve the U.S. Marine Corps training program, specifically training simulations in the U.S. to help soldiers understand non-verbal communication clues such as facial ticks. Without using facial markers an actor's face is captured and in real time transferred onto a 3-D avatar. Using one scientific camera and a process called structured light, the user's image is captured using a sinusoidal wave pattern projected over the user's face which creates a depth map of the face similar to a topographical map of the user's face. an edge detection algorithm is then applied to the depth map capturing the desired facial features, creating a wire frame. This wire frame rendering of the user's face is translated onto a mesh, creating a realistic looking avatar. Then the image is rendered and displayed to the soldier.

This paper examines how to recognize the dynamic object and find its position using a real-time binocular visual image system, which describes contours of the object using edge detection algorithm. The system finds the object of image with shape matched method, which procedures include color segmentation of input image, finding the candidate area of matching color histogram, binary image morphologic management, convex hull process, and finding the object and its contours. Image recognition technique is used to find the features of the object on the image plane. Intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the features are captured using calibration board to form a fundamental matrix for analysis that increases the accuracy of corresponding points. Finally, it performs the three-dimensional reconstruction to combine and associate the feature messages with camera parameters. We can hence obtain three-dimensional coordinate information of the object with reference to the camera system. Experimental results demonstrated that the high achievable accuracy and stability of position coordinates reconstructed from the features and three dimensional coordinates of the object with the camera system's real-time binocular visual subsystem that provides three-dimensional position coordinate for the robotic arms of an intelligent robot.

Throughout the history of the construction industry, many fatalities and injuries have occurred in construction sites. One of the major causes of accidents is unsafe site conditions, which basically is due to inadequate supervision. To improve upon the traditional supervision approach, this study proposes a construction safety visualization approach. In this research paper, we provide a computer vision algorithm to detect in real time if any safety violations occur caused by one or more people in the site not wearing their hard hats. Our algorithm is an extension of our previous work in computer vision, and consists of a detection algorithm that is relatively fast and yet has an accurate edge. This is followed by a video object plane algorithm for each person, which is followed by an algorithm for detecting if a person does or does not wear a hard hat.

Segmentation of images plays a key role in Image Processing as it simplifies further processing by separating a broad image into many parts. White Blood Cells (WBC) microscopic images allow haematologists to predict vulnerability, to several diseases. Our intension is to identify Nucleus of White Blood cells. Colour is a significant reference point for discerning segmented WBCs from microscopic images. Results reveal that in identifying the nucleus of various types of WBC: including Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Eosinophils, Monocytes, Basophils. In this study, we will evaluate the efficiency of the edge detection algorithm (log & Canny) methods, k-Means algorithm, Linear Transformed Image, Color-based technique, and will compare the results with the original image. This will allow haematologists for clear identification of WBC. Analysis of the results using algorithms shows that edge detection and k-means based segmentation is the most suitable approach for segmenting WBC cells.
