A sort of arithmetic for wavelet embedded block coding based on low memory and block bit-length search is brought forward in this article. The memory occupancy can be reduced through four measures which adopted in the arithmetic in the process of coding and coding efficiency can be increasingly improved, respectively. The four measures mentioned above are: (1)LLn sub-band separate coding;(2)Establish block bit-length chart, the bit-length is defined by the author;(3)Save the space of memory by employing bit-length chart instead of using lists;(4)Swift search key blocks according to the construction of bit-length chart to overcome repeat scan and increase the coding speed. According to the experimental results, the arithmetic can reduce memory occupancy in the process of coding and increase the coding speed effectively, meanwhile, it can keep the high quality of PSNR. It has great availability in hardware design for wavelet coding.

For images with textures, the high frequency wavelet coefficients are likely to become significant after few coding passes of the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm, which degrades substantially the coding performance. A hybrid image coder using SPIHT and embedded block coding (EBC) is thus proposed. In which, wavelet coefficients of the low frequency subbands representing the low frequency components of images are still coded by using SPIHT;wavelet coefficients of the high frequency subbands most likely representing the high-detail textures are coded by using EBC. The intermediate coding results of SPIHT can be used as estimates to facilitate the coding operations of EBC, which takes both of the well defined hierarchical tree structure across wavelet subbands and energy clustering within each subband into account to improve the compression performance. Experimental results show that EBC outperforms SPIHT for coding images at middle-high rates of bits per pixel, whereas SPIHT is preferable to EBC at low rates of bits per pixel. As expected, the hybrid SPIHT-EBC coder is comparable with SPIHT and EBC at low and middle-high rates of bits per pixel, respectively, which demonstrates the overall coding performance. can be improved by using the proposed hybrid coder.

In this paper, an image coding algorithm based on a rate-distortion optimized wavelet-based contourlet transform (WBCT) decomposition and on an improved listless blockpartitioning coding scheme which quantizes each subband separately is proposed. The Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform (WBCT) can provide optimally sparse representation of objects with singularities along c(2) edges. Instead of lists, a state table with four bits per coefficient keep s track of the significance of the set and pixel. Each subband is encoded by a quadtree based set partitioning process. This algorithm needs no lists and thus can avoid unfixed memory requirement and the operations of list nodes. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm runs faster than SPIHT and JPEG2000 and set partitioning in hierarchical trees. The proposed algorithm significantly outperforms SPIHT and JPEG2000 schemes and also surpasses WBCT based image coding algorithms, it has a fixed predetermined memory requirement of about 50% of the image size.

The ridgelet transform can provide optimally sparse representation of objects with singularities along straight edges and the orthonormal finite ridgelet transform( OFRIT) can decompose the high frequency parts of the images. A linear indexing technique is used to rep resent the coordinate of a coefficient with a single number instead of two for computational efficiency and algorithm simplicity. Instead of lists, a state table with four bits per coefficient keep s track of the significance of the set and pixel. Each subband is encoded by a quadtree based set partitioning process. This algorithm needs no lists and thus can avoid unfixed memory requirement and the operations of list nodes. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm runs faster than SPIHT and JPEG2000 and set partitioning in hierarchical trees. The proposed algorithm outperforms SPIHT and JPEG2000 schemes in novel image with straight lines significantly or curve lines significantly coding in terms of both PSNR and visual quality, it has a fixed predetermined memory requirement of about 50% of the image size.

embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) is a critical part in JPEG2000 systems. There are bit-plane and pass dual parallel methods that can speed up the encoding, but the acceleration is always companied with the complication of the circuit structure and the increase of the circuit resources. In this paper, we present an improved bit-plane and pass dual parallel architecture (IEBPDP), which not only achieves a high encoding speed but also reduces the logic circuit requirement and the coding delay. Experimental results show that about 45% of the logic circuit is reduced and that the average fall of the delay per code-block is 10% compared with BPDP.
