This paper describes the embedded block coding algorithm at the heart of the JPEG 2000 image compression standard, The paper discusses key considerations which led to the development and adoption of this algorithm, and also investigates performance and complexity issues, The JPEG 2000 coding system achieves excellent compression performance, somewhat higher (and, in some cases, substantially higher) than that of SPIHT with arithmetic coding, a popular benchmark for comparison The algorithm utilizes the same low complexity binary arithmetic coding engine as JBIG2. Together with careful design of the bit-plane coding primitives, this enables comparable execution speed to that observed with the simpler variant of SPIHT without arithmetic coding. The coder offers additional advantages including memory locality, spatial random access and ease of geometric manipulation. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present a new embedded video coding system with local motion compensation. An invertible motion compensated 3-D subband filter bank is utilized for video analysis/synthesis. The efficient embedded image coding scheme EZBC is extended to 3-D coding of video subbands. The coded bitstream is rate scalable and fully embedded thus meeting the increasing need for fine granular scalability in video streaming applications. Our experimental results show the new algorithm outperforms nonscalable standard MPEG-2 by 0.8-3.3 dB (luminance component) over a broad range of bitrates, while providing an embedded video bitstream. Unlike conventional SNR hybrid coders, this multirate property is achieved without a loss in compression efficiency. Comparisons are also made to two other competing embedded video coders, LZC and SD-SPIHT, both based on 3-D subband coding as well. The new coder demonstrates a significant advantage for encoding video with high local motion content, thanks to the efficient inclusion of local motion information in the temporal filter bank of our proposed system. Rate control optimization in embedded wavelet coding

To circumvent the lack of knowledge of what measure is more suitable for optimization of the trade-off between image fidelity and coding rate, this paper shall introduce a novel mathematical methodology for rate control by organizing the progressive transmission in accordance with coherence constraints for avoiding forms of behavioral inconsistency. This methodology could be used within a progressive transmission scheme to produce a new compression method (a rational embedded wavelet image coding). Here we compare a new coding scheme based on the proposed rate control technique against the state of art coder in progressive transmission and demonstrate its superior performance based on an objective criterion of evaluation. Novel Scheme for Object-based embedded Image coding

Conventional EBCOT algorithm encodes an image with the same block-based coding strategy and it is difficult to acquire perceptually consistent results in practical applications. This paper presents a new scheme for object-based embedded coding aiming to enhance the flexibility and the coding efficiency. In our scheme, an original image is firstly segmented into objects, which are taken as basic coding units and are encoded independently. Then the compressed streams of all objects are further truncated and reassembled based on rate-distortion optimization principle according to given bit-rate. In our scheme, each object can be encoded independently with different strategy according to its visual interest at the encoder. At the decoder, it can be decoded and reconstructed independently and progressively. As a whole, the new scheme is more flexible and may enhance the overall subjective quality of reconstructed images. Experiments are conducted and the results show the proposed scheme can implement object-based image coding and rate control effectively.

This paper proposes a new quantitative method called the transform coefficients, which is based on the algebraic quantization method. This coefficient is defined as a unique amplitude multiplied by a number of *** order to determine the signs of pulse, location and amplitude, we selected the transmission coefficient by adopting an ideal standard errors. This simple quantification has been implemented in scalable coding of microwave transform, and has been proved that its voice signal and music effect is better than that of the SPIHT.

The contourlet transform provides a flexible directional image decomposition by employing Laplacian pyramid and uniform directional filter banks. Although it is able to efficiently capture the 2-D piecewise smooth functions with line or curve discontinuities, its major drawbacks of 4/3 redundancy and non-ideal filter banks in Laplacian pyramid are the main obstacles for high performance image/video coding. In this paper, we propose a video coding scheme based on the sharp frequency localized contourlet transform (contourlet/SFL) under the sparse representation framework, in which the iterative thresholding algorithm is applied to get an l(1) norm sparser version of the transform coefficients. In the meantime, considering the fact that strong inter-band and inter-scale dependencies exist in the contourlet/SFL coefficients, a directional embedded image coding system is proposed to propagate the significance status by using the neighbor, cousin and parent significant coefficients as seeds. Experimental results show that the coding performance and visual quality of the sparse contourlet/SFL based video compression scheme are superior to the wavelet-based one, especially on those sequences full of directional structures at low bit rates.

This paper proposes a new quantization for transform coefficients based on algebraic quantization. The coefficients are represented by a few pulses multiplied by a unique amplitude. The coefficients to be transmitted are selected by optimizing an error criterion, that determines the signs, positions and amplitudes of the pulses. This simple quantization has been implemented in a wavelet-based wideband scalable coder, and has been proved to provide a perceptually better quality than SPIHT on speech signal and music.

The human visual system (HVS) is highly space-variant in sampling, coding, processing, and understanding. The spatial resolution of the HVS is highest around the point of fixation (foveation point) and decreases rapidly with increasing eccentricity. By taking advantage of this fact, it is possible to remove considerable high-frequency information redundancy from the peripheral regions and still reconstruct a perceptually good quality image. Great success has been obtained recently by a class of embedded wavelet image coding algorithms, such as the embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) and the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithms. embedded wavelet coding not only provides very good compression performance, but also has the property that the bitstream can be truncated at any point and still be decoded to recreate a reasonably good quality image. In this paper, we propose an embedded foveation image coding (EFIC) algorithm, which orders the encoded bitstream to optimize foveated visual quality at arbitrary bit-rates. A foveation-based image quality metric, namely, foveated wavelet image quality index (FWQI), plays an important role in the EFIC system. We also developed a modified SPIHT algorithm to improve the coding efficiency. Experiments show that EFIC integrates foveation filtering with foveated image coding and demonstrates very good coding performance and scalability in terms of foveated image quality measurement.

We describe the wavelets around land masses (WAVAL) system for the embedded coding of three-dimensional (3-D) oceanographic images. These images differ from those arising in other applications in that valid data exists only at grid points corresponding to sea. Grid points that cover land or lie beyond the bathymetry have no associated data, For these images, the WAVAL system employs a 3-D lifting wavelet transform tailored specifically to the potentially sparse nature of the data by processing only the valid sea data points between land masses. We introduce successive-approximation runlength (SARL) coding, an embedded-coding procedure that adds successive-approximation properties to the well known stack-run (SR) algorithm. SARL is employed to code wavelet coefficients resulting from the 3-D transform in the WAVAL system. However, it is a general technique applicable to other coding tasks in which embedded coding is desired but for which zerotree techniques are impractical. Experimental results show that the WAVAL system achieves substantial improvement in rate-distortion performance over the technique currently used by the U,S. Navy for compression of oceanographic imagery.
