We address multiresolutional encoding and decoding within the embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) framework for both images and video. By varying a resolution parameter, one can obtain decoded images at different resolutions from one single encoded bitstream, which is already rate scalable for EZW coders. Similarly one can decode video sequences at different rates and different spatial and temporal resolutions from one bitstream. Furthermore, a layered bitstream can be generated with multiresolutional encoding, from which the higher resolution layers can be used to increase the spatial/temporal resolution of the images/video obtained from the low resolution layer. In other words, we have achieved full scalability in rate and partial scalability in space and time. This added spatial/temporal scalability is significant for emerging multimedia applications such as fast decoding, image/video database browsing, telemedicine, multipoint video conferencing, and distance learning.

Digital audio offers increased sound quality and greater signal processing flexibility than its analog counterpart. The key enabling technology for digital audio wireless products is audio compression due to channel bandwidth constraints. However, current audio coding schemes can hardly achieve ultra-low delay of encoding and decoding for live productions. This paper presents an efficient DSP implantation of wavelet audio coding using very short block processing to meet the very low delay requirement. The audio signal decomposition and reconstruction is performed by a two dimensional (2D) spatial-frequency processing of lifting wavelet transform to fully exploits the correlation for better compression performance. The lifting wavelet with boundary effects minimized is developed with lifting coefficient optimally quantized and implanted by fixed-point arithmetic applying only bit shifting and addition operations to replace multiplications and divisions, thus minimizing the computational complexity for real-time applications. A modified 2D embedded SPIHT algorithm with more bits used to encode the wavelet coefficients and transmitting fewer bits in the sorting pass, is implemented in fixed-point computation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed coder is efficient and has low complexity with less memory requirements for digital communication.

As the resolution of monitors and TVs continue to increase, the available bandwidth between host system and monitor becomes more and more a bottleneck. The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) is currently developing standards for screen resolutions beyond 4K and, facing the problem of not having enough bandwidth available on traditional copper wires, contacted the JPEG to develop a low complexity, high-throughput still image coder for lossy transmission of video signals. This article describes two approaches to address this predicament, a simple SPIHT based coded and a Hadamard based embedded codec requiring only minimal buffering at encoder and decoder side, and avoiding any pixel-based feedback loops limiting the operating frequency of hardware implementations. Analyzing the details of both implementations reveals an interesting connection between run-length coding, as found in the progressive mode of traditional JPEG coding, and SPIHT/EZW coding - a technique popular in wavelet based compression techniques.

This paper proposes a new structure for a scalable codec. Our proposed codec works with 10 ms input frame for wideband speech and audio signals at bit rates ranging from 8 to 32 kbit/s. The core layer is the ITU-T G.729 at 8 kbit/s producing a narrowband output. The first enhancement layer is a band-witdh extension providing a wideband output with 2 kbit/s. The second enhancement layer is based on algebraic quantization of wavelet packet coefficients and improves gradually the synthesized signal as the bitrate increases. For speech signals, at bitrates of 24 and 32 kbit/s, the codec is shown to be equivalent to the ITU-T G.722 codec at 56 and 64 kbit/s, respectively. Moreover, the codec at 32 kbit/s is assessed to be equivalent to the recently standardized embedded codec ITU-T G.729.1 at the same bitrate with a lower algorithmic delay.

Cubic data has two notable characteristics, the first being the large size of the datasets, requiring compression for storing or Internet transfer, the second is possible occurrence of many line or plane singularities which need to be preserved in compressed data. Ridgelet, a new analytic tool, has the ability to describe linear or super-plane singularities. The ridgelet transform can be described as the application of the wavelet transform to the coefficients of the Radon transform. In this paper, on the basis of this theory, two compression strategies for compression of cubic data are examined. The first strategy is the concept of 2D ridgelet compression applied to each slice of the cubic data and the second one is the concept of 3D ridgelet compression applied to the entire cubic data directly. In our strategies, the Radon transform is realized numerically by parallel projection (2D) or cone beam projection (3D), and the wavelet transform is realized by the lifting wavelet transform. These strategies have the following characteristics: embedded coding and strong robustness, all of which can be seen in the results of the numerical experiments.

We present the ***-VBR winning candidate codec recently selected by Question 9 of Study Group 16 (Q9/16) of ITU-T as a baseline for the development of a scalable solution for wideband speech and audio compression at rates between 8 kb/s and 32 kb/s. The Q9/16 codec is an embedded codec comprising 5 layers where higher layer bitstreams can be discarded without affecting the decoding of the lower layers. The two lower layers are based on the CELP technology where the core layer takes advantage of signal classification based encoding. The higher layers encode the weighted error signal from lower layers using overlap-add transform coding. The codec has been designed with the primary objective of a high-performance wideband speech coding for error-prone telecommunications channels, without compromising the quality for narrowband/wideband speech or wideband music signals. The codec performance is demonstrated with selected test results.

A lifted wavelet-based compression scheme with effective image-column random access for coding image datasets is proposed. This image dataset compression scheme is based on the approach of a lifted wavelet transform combined with embedded block entropy coding. This approach is adapted to compressing the image datasets used for image-based virtual environment navigation and facilitating a column random access mechanism. A specific data structure is designed to achieve efficient compression and accommodate column random access. The code stream syntax is constructed to efficiently assemble bit streams corresponding to the designed data structure. The two-level index tables in the code stream are used to assist random access. This image dataset compression scheme features a proper compromise between the coding efficiency and the random access flexibility, and thus ensures fast interactive image rendering. It reduces the decoding delay, simplifies the implementation of a random access mechanism and easily facilitates real-time image decoding. Experimental results of the software implementation of this image dataset compression scheme show its superior coding performance over the standard JPEG and JPEG 2000 schemes.

In this paper, we investigate the rate-distortion (R-D) performance of the embedded wavelet coder and the frame dependency between the reference frame and the predictive frame. Then, according to the rate-distortion model and the frame dependency to solve the rate control problem to a bit allocation problem for each frame. Experimental results show that the superior performance of the embedded wavelet video coder with the proposed rate control scheme.

We propose a novel directional lifting-based block-set coding algorithm in this paper. Directional lifting wavelet transform based on region partition is firstly used to remove the correlation along the edges and reduce the amount of high-pass subband energy, then a new multi-symbol arithmetic coding based on residual classified context is exploited to code directional information. A context-based block-set partitioning method is proposed to code the directional transformed coefficients. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm for texture-rich images outperforms JPEG2000 by 1.6dB. Especially, the new algorithm can obtain the PSNR gain which up to 0.4dB, comparing with JPEG2000 (EBCOT) based on directional lifting transform.

This paper describes an algorithm for embedded lossy image compression based on the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and the Zerotree coding scheme (EZW). In this algorithm there are two lossy stages, a rounding operation after the transform and a truncation of the coding output. 4 comparative study of different filter banks (from different wavelet families and with different filter lengths) for the wavelet transform and different image scans for the encoding is presented We show their impact in realistic image compression results for our algorithm, specially in compression ratio and reconstruction error.
