Environmental monitoring network along a mountain valley using embedded controllers

This paper presents the design and implementation of an atmospheric observing system to study down slope winds in the Laja River Valley, southern-central Chile. Practical design issues are discussed based on the first two years of operation, as well as scientific results that demonstrate the potential of the measurement system. The system consists of a network of eight meteorological stations that characterize the winds along the Laja River Valley, Chile. The meteorological network extends over 90 km, beginning with the station at the Antuco Ski Center .at 1395 m.a.s.l. and ending at the Charrua Electric Plant at 153 m.a.s.l. The meteorological stations were designed to employ an embedded controller and high-performance instruments with low power consumption. In order to transmit data to the base station, a communication protocol was developed using SMS messages. Graphic tools are also available in the project webpage to visualize received data. Data reported in this work show that the meteorological network is able to identify and characterize downslope winds. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

For microprocessors used in real-time embedded systems, minimising power consumption is difficult due to the timing constraints. Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) has been incorporated into modern microprocessors as a promising technique for exploring the trade-off between energy consumption and system performance. However, it remains a challenge to realise the potential of DVS in unpredictable environments, where the system workload cannot be accurately known. By addressing system-level power-aware design for DVS-enabled embedded controllers, an analytical model has been established for the DVS system that encompasses multiple real-time control tasks. From this model, a feedback control based approach to power management is developed to reduce dynamic power consumption, while achieving good application performance. With this approach, the unpredictability and variability of task execution times can be attacked. Thanks to the use of feedback control theory, predictable performance of the DVS system is achieved, which is favourable to real-time applications. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach.

This paper describes the IOPT-Tools cloud-based tool-chain, offering a complete set of tools supporting design automation for embedded controller's development, benefiting from adopting a model-driven development attitude. The tools are freely available online at http://***/IOPT- Tools/. The tool-chain relies on IOPT nets (Input-Output Place-Transition nets) to describe the controller behavior, allowing an explicit representation of constraints on input and output signals and events, which is necessary for the development of controllers. The IOPT-Tools tool-chain includes tools for interactive graphical IOPT nets models editing, simulation and test (token-player, timing diagram, remote debugging), as well as a state-space generator, state-space visualization, and a query system for properties verification. The tool-chain also supports the automatic generation of execution code to be directly deployed in the controllers' implementation platforms, such as FPGA boards, as well as Arduino, Raspberry, and other Linux-based boards. Most notably, it is possible to obtain C code and VHDL code to be directly deployed into the referred boards without writing/changing a line in the generated code. The tool-chain uses the PNML format for storing the models and can import PNML models generated by other frameworks, automatically generating, if necessary, an associated graphical representation. After, it is possible to add input and output signals and events to create controller models. IOPT-Tools also supports net operations, namely net addition, allowing composition of sub-models, and net splitting, which in conjunction with the use of clock domains and dedicated communication channels support the development of distributed controllers.

FIPA-compliant agent platforms must include an Agent Management System, an Agent Communication Channel and a Director Facilitator (DF). The DF is centralized and it administers a register of agents which previously had been registered. Every agent could perform a search for an agent(s) that has specific characteristics or provides a determined service. A centralized DF is a potential point of failure and could cause network overload. The DFs could be distributed through the networked embedded controllers. This paper describes the development of a Distributed Director Facilitator (DDF) which keeps a local register of service providers including the name of the agents and the services provided, this means that every controller could have its own DDF, and agents hosted within a controller could query over the list of service providers.

The presented PROFIBUS DP Slave Shield creates a link between a PROFIBUS DP network and a microcontroller or embedded controller. The hardware can be used as an extension module for different embedded controllers with sufficiently fast TO. The system opens possibilities to connect virtual systems or Hardware-In-the-Loop systems running real-time MATLAB models to a PROFIBUS DP network running up to 12 Mbps. Measurement of signal timing and latency shows that the shield itself does not introduce significant latency.

The paper describe a real time remote measuring system based on a reconfigurable controller system for environment parameters measurements. lye. are integrating embedded controllers for measurements into TCP/IP infrastructure as a remote measurement implementation, and we collect manY heterogeneous types of parameters, as a measurement implementation. We are evaluating the performances of high speed FPGA and/or real time implementation via TCP/IP - 802.11g. The quality, of the evaluation will be described by the time delay of the measurements. Based on these aspects we have developed virtual instruments and we have built zip applications module to optimize measurements performances taking into account the sampling time, measurements delay, time delay processing, and applications behavior. Running VI-s for each criterion, the main related expectations have been fulfilled. For combined criteria, some improvements have to be developed into the software side, and some actual facilities of LabVIEW must be combined with operating system programming.

Implementation of a feedback control scheme and its associated user-interface and data acquisition modules in a distributed real-time computing environment are described. The distributed system consists of an ethernet network interconnecting real-time processor modules to host workstations and other embedded controllers. The goal of the feedback control scheme is to maintain positions of the electron beam in the middle of the vacuum chamber in the presence of electromagnetic interference and noise. Technical details of implementing the data acquisition and control scheme and their integration with the existing control system modules are presented, along with experimental results.

For electric scooters, this work develops linear parameter-varying systems (LPV) control synthesis to fulfill the trade-off between energy consumption per distance and propulsion capability in transience. The synthesized regulator functions as the transmission in the transient state, which is analogous to gear transmission in the steady state. Simulations and experiments are provided to verify the proposed synthesis, wherein a per-distance strategy is shown to have better performance in terms of energy and motion than a per-time strategy. Application-specific processor architectures for embedded control: Case studies

This paper illustrates certain design techniques and tradeoffs for application-specific processors by considering the design of fully integrated speed and torque controllers for electric motors. We begin with the algorithmic requirements of two controller ASICs leading to a top-level partitioning of each system. Critical partitions are then allocated to dedicated processors with customised instruction sets and architectures. The implementation of the ALU and the control unit of each processor is described and we conclude by reviewing the performance and design costs of the resulting systems. Our approach is suitable for embedded control applications where software requirements are not very extensive (e.g. several Kbytes of code and data) and significant cost and performance advantages can be obtained from integrating all the functions and software in a single chip. The use of application-specific processors simplifies the design and gives a performance advantage of about two to three times over a standard microcontroller or digital signal processor.
