As embedded systems become increasingly complex, there is a great need to equip engineering students with the knowledge of advanced embedded software development techniques so as to improve their efficiency in software development and programming. This paper presents our experiences of introducing the model-based design (MBD) methodology to two computer engineering related undergraduate courses: programming Tools and Real-time embedded Systems. MBD is an emerging design methodology whose effectiveness and efficiency have been demonstrated in the development of embedded software systems in industry. Matlab/Simulink from MathWorks supports the MBD and has become the predominant software modeling language in many safety-critical embedded applications. The novelty of this teaching effort is incorporating two on-going research projects on the MBD with the Matlab/Simulink into education. The synergistic benefits of integrating research with teaching have been explored in two different manners. Our experiences demonstrate that the integration of research results with educational practices is efficient to improve the effectiveness of teaching programming and software development to engineering students, and promote undergraduates to participate in research projects as well.

A widely useful technique for implementing complex programs is to use multiple threads of execution. Unfortunately, when we multithread a program we introduce the potential for bugs caused by unprotected critical sections. A widely useful technique for reducing the number of critical sections, and hence the number of bugs, is that of active objects, This paper presents a design for active objects that is easy to understand, implement and use in any sufficiently powerful object-oriented programming language. We show the implementation and use of our design in both the Java(TM) and C++ programming languages. (C) 1998 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A new graduate from electrical engineering education must know about digital signal processing (DSP) to find a secure place in the competitive jobs market. Although this topic can be taught theoretically, its importance comes from practical applications. Therefore, students must be equipped with appropriate tools. Fortunately, DSP platforms serve this purpose. At Yeditepe University, we established a laboratory to guide students in real-time digital signal processing applications. We selected a Texas Instruments TMS320C6713 DSK platform for this purpose. In this study, we provide several laboratory applications on this platform. We also provide more advanced projects developed by our students which emerged from these applications. We observed that this laboratory improved the understanding of theoretical DSP concepts.

In this work, we consider a joint optimisation of real-time deployment and resource allocation scheme for UAV-aided relay systems in emergency scenarios such as disaster relief and public safety missions. In particular, to recover the network within a disaster area, we propose a fast K-means-based user clustering model and jointly optimal power and time transferring allocation which can be applied in the real system by using UAVs as flying base stations for real-time recovering and maintaining network connectivity during and after disasters. Under the stringent QoS constraints, we then provide centralised and distributed models to maximise the energy efficiency of the considered network. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed computational approaches in terms of network energy efficiency and execution time for solving the resource allocation problem in real-time scenarios. We demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms other benchmark schemes.

Construction and programming of an autonomous focus stacker

Focus stacking is a technique of photomacrography and photomicrography that produces images of small three-dimensional subjects with an arbitrarily high depth of field, unencumbered by diffraction, by combining the in-focus portions of a stack of images of the subject recorded at different focal planes. Software packages are available for postprocessing an image stack into the final image, but the stack images are normally shot either with (typically expensive) automated equipment or by a manual, time-consuming, and error-prone procedures. This paper discusses the construction of an autonomous stacker with inexpensive preassembled electronics and a moderate amount of mechanical construction, and its C++ software. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Projecting a Modular Future

Two innovations are enhancing programming languages' capabilities. First, modularity lets you combine independently developed languages without changing their respective definitions. A language is no longer a fixed quantity; you can extend it with domain-specific constructs as needed. Second, projectional editing lets you build editors and IDEs that don't require parsers. Such editors and IDEs support a range of tightly integrated notations, including textual, symbolic, tabular, and graphical notations. In addition, by avoiding parsers, they avoid grammar composition's well-known limitations. Three examples illustrate how these two innovations affect programming-language design. A set of modular extensions of C for embedded programming enables efficient code generation and formal analysis. A language for requirements engineering flexibly combines structured and unstructured (prose) data. Finally, a language for defining insurance rules uses mathematical notation. These examples all rely on the open source JetBrains MPS (Meta programming System) language workbench. This article is part of a special issue on Software Architecture.

As the intelligence and connectivity are ubiquitous, the demand for AIoT devices are huge. But the constraint posed by fragmentation in IoT applications not only complicates development, but also increase the development costs, and impedes future scalability and maintenance. IoT products developed with great efforts invest with low sales volumes and a low return on investment, which dampens success for businesses to enter the IoT field and hinders the paces of IoT application development. In this paper, a scenario-based programming methodology and an effective IoT developer studio for makers and new beginners are presented, which can reduce the cost dramatically. Some use cases are also introduced to demonstrate the effectiveness of the solution for IoT application fragmentation problem.

In many test applications involving high speed digital data buses, the time required to receive data from a Unit Under Test (UUT), process that data, and provide a response to the UUT may be small enough to preclude use of the computer controlling the overall test system, even if the nature of that data processing is not very complex. In these situations, Test Program Set (TPS) developers can use local computing power that is embedded in a particular test instrument. However, developing test programs to run on this embedded computing power can be difficult and involve purchasing additional software tools beyond what is provided with the test system. In addition, the embedded computer program does not run independently, but rather in tandem with and under the control of, the test program running on the test system computer. So, in addition to developing the algorithms to receive, process, and transmit data, the TPS developer must also provide the framework by which the overall test program can control these operations. The solution proposed in this paper helps simplify the TPS development effort by;1) providing a simple scripting language that TPS developers can use to create test scripts that execute on the test instrumentation, 2) providing them with tools to code and compile those test scripts, 3) providing the necessary framework for them to allow the overall test program to control the operation of the test scripts, and relieving the TPS developers of that burden, and 4) providing an alternative to them having to purchase expensive, real-time programming tools. This paper identifies test applications where test scripting may be used effectively in reducing overall TPS development time, lists basic features of a test scripting language, describes the capabilities needed of the accompanying tool set, and how the test scripts would be developed and integrated into a TPS. Multi-target development is commonly used in embedded programming where different hardware systems can be used to perform the same set of functionalities defined in the user source code. This is usually handled by lengthy Makefiles or similar, which can be a roadblock for many beginning programmers. Here, we provide a simple approach for multi-target development. Specifically, our approach is based on (1) the project organization in the file system, (2) project management in the toolchain, (3) using a hook function for minimum intrusion to the automatically generated code as well as callback functions for interrupt handling, and (4) leveraging compiler symbol definitions for automatic conditional compilation. Additionally, we use the weak and normal functions organized in two top-level folders to facilitate selective code delivery, which is badly needed in the education area where problem code can be delivered to students and the solutions can be delivered to teaching assistants without project and code duplication. An illustrative project programmed in both C and assembly is provided to illustrate the points we discussed in the paper.
