Multi-target development is commonly used in embedded programming where different hardware systems can be used to perform the same set of functionalities defined in the user source code. This is usually handled by lengthy Makefiles or similar, which can be a roadblock for many beginning programmers. Here, we provide a simple approach for multi-target development. Specifically, our approach is based on (1) the project organization in the file system, (2) project management in the toolchain, (3) using a hook function for minimum intrusion to the automatically generated code as well as callback functions for interrupt handling, and (4) leveraging compiler symbol definitions for automatic conditional compilation. Additionally, we use the weak and normal functions organized in two top-level folders to facilitate selective code delivery, which is badly needed in the education area where problem code can be delivered to students and the solutions can be delivered to teaching assistants without project and code duplication. An illustrative project programmed in both C and assembly is provided to illustrate the points we discussed in the paper.

Almost all universities offer introductory courses that focus on microcontroller-based systems and embedded programming. Advanced course offerings vary, and are often not available until the graduate level, leaving a gap in training undergraduates. However, courses are emerging that take advantage of new embedded development platforms that support hardware-software codesign. At Iowa State University, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is developing a new upper-level design course on embedded systems design (CPRE 488) that sits between the introductory course on microcontrollers (CPRE 211) and a graduate course on system-level design (CPRE 588). CPRE 488 pulls together pedagogy from leading textbooks in embedded systems (such as Wolf and also Vahid and Givargis) and puts the concepts into an intensive laboratory incorporating platform FPGA technology. The lab utilizes Xilinx's Virtex H Pro FPGA, which includes a hard-core dedicated processor as well as FPGA fabric, allowing for a complete hardware-software system to be explored entirely within the FPGA.

The advent of Internet of Things - IoT - technology has elevated the embedded solutions employment to level never seen before, both in the problem-solving possibilities as in the complexity of the new systems. SoC-based computers such as those used in embedded systems have been under growing attention due to their low-cost, low-power, reduced footprint and high performance characteristics. These features allow small users as well as industries to design, develop and build wide range of applications with efficiency as the common aspect. A number of platforms that integrate this kind of technology were also proposed by different manufacturers, some employing the open hardware concept. embedded applications spread over a wide range of fields, which make them hard to characterize in a general sense. For this reason, benchmark suites are often used as a tool for system's performance evaluation. However, such suites consist on a large number of different algorithms, which can spend time and energy to run on SoC computers. In order to contribute to the performance assessment of such systems, this paper presents a simple method for comparing different platforms, based on execution time of simple but representative algorithms: sorting, cross-correlation and discrete-cosine transform calculation for vectors. The power consumption was also considered. Six distinct architectures were used as a case study. Several computer experiments were conducted in order to make possible a statistic characterization of different load conditions in distinct platforms, so their comparison can be done in a meaningful way. Results show that the proposed method provides a good estimation of relative system performance, which can be useful as a criterion choice for selecting different embedded platforms.

The paper introduced the embedded programming technology and described the design of pocket-PC based multi-function digital mapping system. It also discussed some problems in the process of implementation of the system, including map display, GPS data acceptance and module communication etc. The system with basic real-time mapping functions is implemented using the embedded Visual C++. This paper analyzed the problem in the application of the system and provided related solutions.

The paper presents two developing approaches of a Controller Area Network signal analyzing tool. The tool enables signal test/diagnose facility for Electronic Control Unit's within a Controller Area Network based communication network without PC (i.e.: vehicle, automated manufacturing line, distributed motor control application). The tool is based on a simple and inexpensive target hardware, and is easily reconfigurable and extendable for different applications. The program has been tested for automotive application.

This research was conducted to allow real-time transmission, processing and presentation of data to swimming coaches and subsequently their swimmers in a training environment. This was done using an integrated system which comprised of a wireless sensor node, vision components and both force and pressure measurement technologies. Filtering approaches and signal processing algorithms were used to allow real-time data analysis on the node. Immediate feedback to the coach and sports scientist on poolside allows for a swimmer to be given quantifiable coaching tips and enables them to adjust their performance based on the results obtained. The system has reduced the time for processing acquired data and has delivered novel monitoring devices suitable for the harshness of the pool environment. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are widely used in telecommunication due their substantial computational power and flexibly designed architecture. These features become especially important for applications of low transmission latency such as those supported by Distributed Multimedia Plays (DMP) architecture. Thus FPGAs are chosen in this work as the core building block of the system. Complex multi-node telecommunication systems require special design methodology contrary to small ICT applications usually implemented in HDL. The methodology should be based on the appropriate tools from FPGA vendors for support and maintenance. This paper presents an architecture of a module to be embedded in all the FPGA-based nodes constituting a platform for the Real Time Internet based on DMP. It is designed using an embedded development kit natively supported by Xilinx and flexible in available cores. We present the implementation results of the network-node module and the description of PCIe-based protocol for inter-FPGA communication.

The work describes the constructions of optical fiber based minimal invasive sensing system to measure pH and dissolved oxygen using sol-gel membranes which are attached internally in any transparent container. The disposable sensing membranes are very thin size and prepared as fluorescent dye doped in silica film using simple procedures. The sensor characteristics such as response time, linearity, repeatability and reversibility are evaluated and the performance of the sensor also compared with commercial meters. The experiments such as, chemical stability and photo stability are also carried out. The detection limit of pH sensor is found between 3 pH and 10 pH, however good sensitivity is obtained for the ranges from 4 pH and 9 pH with the response time of 7 seconds. Non-linear response is obtained for dissolved oxygen sensor and it is made linear by applying Stern-Volmer equation. The oxygen sensor shows good sensitivity in the ranges from 2 mg/L to 8 mg/L.

The SensorQuad is designed as a low cost teaching platform for embedded programming. It focuses on students of mechanical engineering, especially in the field of automation, that need to understand the concepts of control systems. It allows to show the basics, then develop the skills further for example with DC motor control, sensor communication, to more advanced topics such as for example PID control. It uses an STM32 processor, four DC motors, LEDs and several sensors (acceleration, magnetic field, temperature, humidity,...). Commented examples are provided to students to shown how to work with the peripherals. It is designed as a low cost device, so that the student can eventually buy it and use it at home as well. It is also provided with an example application for Android so that the programming of a control interface and bidirectional Bluetooth communication can be shown as well.

In this paper the Linoc prototyping toolkit is presented. It is a sensor toolkit that focuses on fast prototyping of sensor systems, especially on capacitive ones. The toolkit is built around two capacitive and two Electric Potential Sensing (EPS) groups providing unobtrusive proximity detection in the field of Human Computer Interface (HCI). The toolkits focus lies on its usability and connectivity in order to be adapted in future research and novel use cases. A common obstacle in the beginning of a project is the time required to familiarize with present tools and systems, before the actual project can be attended to. Another obstacle while tackling new tasks is the actual physical connection of sensors to the processing unit. This situation can be even worse due to dependencies on previous work, most of the times not fully documented and missing knowledge even if the the original designer is involved. Good toolkits can help to overcome this problem by providing a layer of abstraction and allowing to work on a higher level. If the toolkit however requires too much time to familiarize or behaves too restrictive, its goal has been missed and no benefits are generated. To assess the quality of the Linoc prototyping toolkit, it was evaluated in terms of three different aspects: demonstration, usage and technical performance. The usage study found good reception, a fast learning curve and an interest to use the toolkit in the future. Technical benchmarks for the capacitive sensors show a detectable range equal to its predecessors and several operational prototypes prove that the toolkit can actually be used in projects.
