Perceptions of Java - Experienced programmers' perspective

A survey of eight different groups of over 100 experienced programmers who had just finished their first course in Java was conducted to statistically study the effect of programmers' background on their perceptions of the importance of various Java language features. The correct perception of the importance of various language features allows a learner to appropriate an adequate amount of time to their study. The survey was also used to assess these programmers' desire to use Java, and to obtain their general opinions of Java as a programming language. These two factors are directly related to motivation, a key component of learning. Training and educators can use results of this study to help them determine the Java language features that need to be emphasized, based on programmer background. They can also use this study to help them gauge the motivation of their students to learn Java.
