A novel, optical temporal encoding/decoding method is proposed and demonstrated. This can be accomplished by passing a short optical pulse through cascaded long-period fiber gratings. It has the advantages of constructing ultrafast codes and developing resistance to interferometric perturbations among the coded pulses. To verify the feasibility as a code generator, two types of codes are generated and compared with the predicted code patterns. In addition, to show an application for an optical code-division-multiplexing system, decoding performances with matched and unmatched decoders are compared. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

We proposed and demonstrated a novel time domain spectral phase encoding/decoding scheme by time domain stretching and high speed phase modulating short optical pulses. 16 chips, 40 GHz/chip optical codes have been generated and recognized successfully using long chirped fibre Bragg grating (LCFBG) as dispersive components, respectively. Transmission experiments have been carried out successfully with 2.5 Gbps over up to 50 km SMF.

As an outstanding representative of British Cultural Studies, Stuart Hall has long been occupied as the leader of the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) in its theories, thoughts and factual work. He has been concentrated on the critical topics such as culture, ideology, and identity. In the field of mass communication, major contribution of Hall lies in his attempts to connect the ideological encoding of cultural formation to the decoding position of the audiences. His thought develops the critical theories of mass communication. Given the importance of Hall’s role in the contemporary cultural studies and his significant contribution to mass media research, it is worthwhile for us to probe deeper into his thought to explore valuable contents. In this essay, it mainly concerns Hall’s new model of encoding/decoding and the theory of the audience.

Museums are sites of contested meaning that bring together artifacts of the other with the sense-making practices of patrons. The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit in Charlotte, North Carolina exemplifies a similar struggle as patrons negotiate between appeals to the authority of science and appeals to the authority of the Bible. Our analysis demonstrates that religion-rather than class struggle-permeates the encoding and decoding practices there. This struggle is exacerbated in part because of the religious nature of the artifacts on display;and also because when read as a text, the site's latent discourse reinforces the collective belief among many Evangelical Christians in the accuracy of the Bible. Furthermore, the exhibit's public relations campaign, its layout and design, and the predominantly Christian background of its guests coalesce to amplify a sense of the numinous.

This article notes the 'vernacular aesthetic' at work in the new breed of experience-centred heritage museums, which foreground and celebrate the ordinary lives of 'the people'. It seeks to understand how constructs of 'the people' are produced at such museums. Many existing treatments of heritage museums have analysed them as symptoms of totalizing trends, rather than coming to terms with how they work as sites of cultural communication. By drawing on Stuart Hall's theory of encoding/decoding, the article presents a linked analysis of the encoding and decoding of 'the people' at a heritage museum in South Wales. Ir discusses how this museum was set up, through particular relations of production and frameworks of knowledge, and shows how the heritage texts are the negotiated and hybrid outcome of the conflicts that shaped encoding. It then traces the circuit of communication through to a visitor study, which asked visitors what impressions of 'the people then' they had formed during their visit. A particular concern was to explore how visitors positioned their Present lives in relation to the past, and how popular mythologies of 'community' are deployed in this process.

This paper focuses on a pattern design method for a 3D triangular garment surface. Firstly, some definitions of 3D style lines are proposed for designing the boundaries of patterns as drawing straight lines or splines on the triangular surface. Additionally some commonly used style lines are automatically generated to enhance design efficiency. Secondly, after style lines are preprocessed, a searching method is presented for quickly obtaining the boundaries and patches of a pattern on the 3D trian- gular surface. Finally a new pattern design reuse method is introduced by encoding/decoding the style line information. After style lines are encoded, the pattern design information can be saved in a pattern template and when decoding this template on a new garment surface, it automates the pattern generation for made-to-measure apparel products.

Estelle currently does not support ASN.1 and encoding and decoding rules. Tools developed for Estelle and ASN.1 have been developed independently of each other. As such, ASN.1 tools do not support Estelle and vice versa. At present, due to these two separate specifications, implementation is time consuming. It is imperative to find a way for ASN.1 and Estelle specifications to be efficiently integrated to facilitate fully automatic implementation. This paper describes how Estelle and ASN.1 can be integrated to give a unified specification which can then be fed into a software environment to produce a truly automatic implementation of an application protocol, including encoding and decoding of protocol data units, when application layer protocols are specified in Estelle and in ASN.1. The integration approach is based on the powerful programming concept, Data Abstraction. The software that implements this integrated specification approach to automatic implementation of application protocol is called EASE (Estelle and ASN.1 Software Environment). To demonstrate the viability of the approach, the unified specification of the ISO ACSE and Presentation protocols are also presented.

Compressed sensing (CS) decoding algorithms can efficiently recover an N-dimensional real-valued vector x to within a factor of its best k-term approximation by taking m = O(k log N/k) measurements y = Phi x. If the sparsity or approximate sparsity level of x were known, then this theoretical guarantee would imply quality assurance of the resulting CS estimate. However, because the underlying sparsity of the signal x is unknown, the quality of a CS estimate (x) over cap using m measurements is not assured. It is nevertheless shown in this paper that sharp bounds on the error parallel to x - (x) over cap parallel to(l2N) can be achieved with almost no effort. More precisely, suppose that a maximum number of measurements m is preimposed. One can reserve 10 log p of these m measurements and compute a sequence of possible estimates ((x) over cap (j))(j=1)(p) to x from the m - 10 log p remaining measurements;the errors parallel to x - (x) over cap parallel to(l2N) for j = 1, ..., p can then be bounded with high probability. As a consequence, numerical upper and lower bounds on the error between x and the best k-term approximation to x can be estimated for p values of k with almost no cost. This observation has applications outside CS as well.

This paper presents customer participating 3D garment design methods for mass personalization. Complex fashion design is separated into garment surface modeling, pattern designing and texture mapping. Based on the modularization of the garment, we propose a component option sheet to describe the Garment surface Style (GS). Customers can choose components flexibly to construct a basic GS fast. Individual GS can be further modeled by editing the contour curves. Thus, we encode contour curves to save GS information and construct a GS library. The user can drag a favorite GS onto a 3D mannequin model and recover it by decoding the contour curves as a prototype for individual surface design. The users can also draw or drag style curves freely on a 3D triangular garment surface to design individual 3D pattern styles. Total or partial style curves encoding/decoding methods are proposed to store the 3D Pattern Style (PS), and to form a library. Customers can also choose a favorite PS and decode them on another garment surface as a prototype for individual pattern design. Through flexible choices from the garment component library, GS library, PS library, and simply dragging or drawing of contour curves and style curves, customers can easily and conveniently participate in 3D garment design for mass personalization.

In this paper, a deconvolution preprocessing module for ECG codec performance improvement (DPM-ECPI) is presented. The idea is simple but efficient. Primary, it consists in transforming an ECG signal to an impulsional one using a deconvolution process. The obtained signal is then encoded for either transmission or storage. In this work we take into consideration the well known SPIHT algorithm, used also for efficient comparison purpose. To reconstruct the signal, a simple convolution is however applied to the decoded impulsional signal. For high compression ratios, we show that this new compression scheme is particularly interesting than a direct coding. As it is common, real signals from MIT-BIH arrhythmia database have been used to validate the proposed scheme. (c) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
