A novel bit-by-bit code hopping scheme using single phase modulator is proposed and demonstrated for secure optical communication application. In the experiment, 2.5 Gbit/s DPSK data has been generated and securely transmitted over 34 km by scrambling five 8-chip, 20 Gchip/s Gold codes with prime-hop patterns.
In this paper, we review the advances of using bit-by-bit optical code scrambling and rapid reconfigurable/code-length-variable code shifting technologies for security improvement in optical communication system.

This article intends to revisit David Morley's work, The 'Nationwide' Audience: Structure and decoding , by reanalysing his findings in a way of revealing some distinct decoding patterns. While The 'Nationwide' Audience has been acclaimed as one of the most influential empirical works in audience studies, it has been often misunderstood as if the work failed to find out systemic and consistent influences of viewers' social conditions on decoding practices. On the contrary, by using a statistical method, this paper demonstrates that the audiences' decodings of the programme presented by Morley are in fact clearly patterned by their social positions. The findings reveal the over-determined effects of various social conditions such as class, gender, race and age. Particularly, the results seem to restore the importance of social class on the interpretive process, which has been displaced and ignored in many current media studies. Highlighting audiences' structural social positions, the reading patterns rediscovered here allow us to rebut not only the traditional Marxist view of class determinism but also any relativist accounts of cultural activity.

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the use of representations and symbols of Canadian identity within the event coverage produced by the Ultimate Fighting Cham- pionship Corporation, in the context of its two key events, Ultimate Fighting Champion- ship, and Fight Night, produced in Canada. To establish the historical context in which the sport developed in Canada, a narrative historiography of the political and legal struggles that led to the legalization and increas- ing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts, and the UFCC's version of the sport, in particular. This first major part of the dissertation is contained in Study 1. The second major part of the dissertation consists of two interrelated studies (Studies 2 and 3), both focussing on narratives of Canadian identity produced by the UFCC in its main event and related coverage. Using Stuart Hall concept of encoding/decoding, Study 2 investigated the UFCC's broadcast and narrative production as the encoding stage of the communication process. Study 3, conversely, investigated the responses and comments produced by the UFC fan base, in response to the UFCC's coverage. Certain fan blogs and web sites were investigated as the expression of the fan base perspective. These responses were investigated as the decoding stage, in Hall's conceptualization of the communication process. The findings from studies 2 and 3 show that the strategic use of specific themes of Canadian identity invoked in the context of UFC event coverage, was to a large extent accepted positively by the segment of the fan base investigated here; however, opposi- tional or negotiated readings of the UFCC's coverage was significantly evident in the fan blog responses as well.

Mukbang, in which people broadcast themselves eating large quantities, started to enter the Chinese market around 2014 and gradually became popular. In this thesis, by analyzing the encodings of mukbang videos on Kuaishou, the shared themes across videos were discovered. Also, the decodings of mukbang videos by viewers were examined so as to figure out their different attitudes and emotions toward mukbang videos and mukbangers. Findings suggested that mukbang videos and its viewers have built up a complex relationship. Pursuing the thrill of hunger, vicarious eating, emotional establishment, and relieving anorexia were found as main reasons the viewers choose to watch mukbang videos. However, some viewers also expressed their shock, even disbelief on unusual food intake. Others expressed their desires on owning a slim figure that never becoming overweight even overeating. This thesis also argued that mukbang has indeed caused a certain harmful impact on the perception of eating norms and eating behaviors of some viewers.

The Object-Oriented Data Specification Framework (OODSF) is a C++ framework to facilitate programming in a heterogeneous distributed environment. Using the OODSF, C++ language bindings of commonly used specification languages, such as Abstract Syntax Notation 1 (ASN.l) and Interface Definition Language (IDL), can be defined. The OODSF defines C++ class libraries for ASN.l and IDL to simplify the C++ language bindings. Arbitrary application-level IDL and ASN.l specifications can be translated into C++ representations based on these class libraries. The OODSF contains facilities for encoding and decoding transferred data, allowing interoperability in a heterogeneous distributed system. A general interface is provided to encoding and decoding services so that a flexible choice of an encoding rule can be made. The current implementation of the OODSF contains external encoding Rule (XDR) and Basic encoding Rule (BER).

This paper presents a novel hybrid algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and noising metaheuristics for solving the single-source shortest-path problem (SPP) commonly encountered in graph theory. This hybrid search process combines PSO for iteratively finding a population of better solutions and noising method for diversifying the search scheme to solve this problem. A new encoding/decoding scheme based on heuristics has been devised for representing the SPP parameters as a particle in PSO. Noising-method-based metaheuristics ( noisy local search) have been incorporated in order to enhance the overall search effciency. In particular, an iteration of the proposed hybrid algorithm consists of a standard PSO iteration and few trials of noising scheme applied to each better/improved particle for local search, where the neighborhood of each such particle is noisily explored with an elementary transformation of the particle so as to escape possible local minima and to diversify the search. Simulation results on several networks with random topologies are used to illustrate the effciency of the proposed hybrid algorithm for shortest-path computation. The proposed algorithm can be used as a platform for solving other NP-hard SPPs. Copyright (c) 2007 A. W. Mohemmed and N. C. Sahoo.
