Effect of post-encoding emotion on recollection and familiarity for pictures

Although prior studies have examined the effect of post-encoding emotional arousal on recognition memory for words, it is unknown whether the enhancement effect observed on words generalizes to pictures. Furthermore, prior studies using words have showed that the effect of emotional arousal can be modulated by stimuli valence and delay in emotion induction, but it is unclear whether such modulation can extend to pictures and whether other factors such as encoding method (incidental vs. intentional encoding) can be modulatory. Five experiments were conducted to answer these questions. In Experiment 1, participants encoded a list of neutral and negative pictures and then watched a 3-min neutral or negative video. The delayed test showed that negative arousal impaired recollection regardless of picture valence but had no effect on familiarity. Experiment 2 replicated the above findings. Experiment 3 was similar to Experiment 1 except that participants watched a 3-min neutral, negative, or positive video and conducted free recall before the recognition test. Unlike the prior two experiments, the impairment effect of negative arousal disappeared. Experiment 4, where the free recall task was eliminated, replicated the results from Experiment 3. Experiment 5 replicated Experiments 1 and 2 and further showed that the impairment effects of negative arousal could be modulated by delay in emotion induction but not by encoding method or stimuli valence. Taken together, the current study suggests that the enhancement effect observed on words may not generalize to pictures.

We build upon the idea of Physiological Value Based Security schemes as a means of securing body sensor networks (BSN). Such schemes provide a secure means for sensors in a BSN to communicate with one another, as long as they can measure the same underlying physiological signal. This avoids the use of pre-distributed keys and allows re-keying to be done easily. Such techniques require identifying signals and encoding methods that can be used in the scheme. Hence we first evaluate step interval as our physiological signal, using existing modular encoding method and our proposed learned partitioning function as the encoding methods. We show that both of these are usable with the scheme and identify a suitable parametrisation. We then go on to evaluate arterial blood pressure using our proposed learned mean FFT coefficients method. We demonstrate that with the correct parameters this could also be used in the scheme. This further improves the usability of PVS schemes, by identify two more signals that could be used, as well as two encoding methods that may also be useful for other signals.

We introduce Spatio-Temporal Vector of Locally Max Pooled Features (ST-VLMPF), a super vector-based encoding method specifically designed for local deep features encoding. The proposed method addresses an important problem of video understanding: how to build a video representation that incorporates the CNN features over the entire video. Feature assignment is carried out at two levels, by using the similarity and spatio-temporal information. For each assignment we build a specific encoding, focused on the nature of deep features, with the goal to capture the highest feature responses from the highest neuron activation of the network. Our ST-VLMPF clearly provides a more reliable video representation than some of the most widely used and powerful encoding approaches (Improved Fisher Vectors and Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors), while maintaining a low computational complexity. We conduct experiments on three action recognition datasets: HMDB51, UCF50 and UCF101. Our pipeline obtains state-of-the-art results.

Aiming at the firepower allocation problem of strategic bomber in its multi-target attack, the optimal firepower allocation model is established based on the principle to obtain the maximum damage value of targets. Then the genetic algorithm (GA) is improved. A new genetic encoding method is proposed, by which the constraints of the firepower allocation problem can be included in each individual. Meanwhile the corresponding genetic operators of selection, crossover and mutation are designed and individuals will still meet the constraints after these genetic operations. Finally the inversion operator is introduced to enhance the local search ability of GA. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm is a simple, accurate, effective and fast algorithm. Compared with simple GA (SGA) based on binary code and GA based on general decimal code (DGA), the solution quality and solving efficiency of the improved GA (IGA) are greatly increased.

We propose a predictive compression scheme for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data based on the analysis-by-synthesis encoding method. The algorithm is inspired by the code excited linear prediction (CELP) algorithm used in speech compression and exploits the correlation across azimuth of the range-focused SAR data. We also extend this approach to include multiple codebooks and obtain the performance of the proposed methods on recorded data. Numerical results show that these algorithms outperform the open-loop predictive quantization schemes.

A Novel Locally Linear Embedding and Wavelet Transform Based encoding method for Prediction of MHC-II Binding Affinity

The binding between peptides and MHC molecules is an important event to the cellular immunity against pathogens. The binding peptides are recognized as the epitopes, which are useful for the epitope-based vaccine design. Accurate prediction of the MHC-II binding peptides has long been a challenge in bioinformatics. Recently, most researchers are interested in predicting the binding affinity instead of categorizing peptides as "binders" or "non-binders". In this paper, we introduced a novel encoding scheme based on Locally Linear Embedding (LLE) and Wavelet Transform (WT), in which important amino acid properties were firstly selected from all properties (described in AAindex database) by using LLE, and then amino acids of peptides were replaced with these novel properties. Further, WT was adopted to extract the frequency attributes of the numerical sequences;thereby the peptides were transformed into homogeneous-length vectors. Finally, Support Vector machine Regression (SVR) was used to make quantitative prediction models based on these numerical vectors. When applied to the 16 datasets from IEDB database, our encoding scheme produced consistently better performance than other encoding schemes, indicating that our encoding scheme is an effective tool for the prediction of MHC-II binding affinity.

As Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits are shrinking aggressively, interconnect length is becoming longer. So interconnect power consumption due to capacitive coupling is increasing. Again, as operating frequency is increasing and rising time is very short, the inductance effect between interconnects can no longer be ignored. So, capacitive coupling and inductive coupling are both power and performance bottlenecks of modern interconnect design. In our paper, we have proposed an encoding method of data based on odd and even inverts of encoding. Our simulation results show that peak power is due to capacitive coupling and can be reduced up to 43.64%. Average power consumption decreases by 17.38%. Inductive ringing can be minimized up to 83.33% at logic high level and up to 30% at logic low level.

With the advancement of technologies, interconnect circuits are shrinking dramatically. Capacitances of interconnects are increasing due to minimized wire size and inter wire spacing. As a result, interconnect power consumption, delay, and crosstalk are increasing significantly, which is affecting overall interconnect performance. Various techniques such as buffer insertion, shielding, skewing, and encoding are used to minimize delay, crosstalk, and power consumption. This paper studies a set of encoding methods for reducing power consumption, crosstalk, and delay, and also presents a comprehensive comparison and analysis of these encoding techniques.

Improving Software Implementation of Computer Generated Holograms

It is difficult to produce diffractive optical elements as a computer generated hologram (CGH) of a complex transfer function, because the amplitude and phase vary in a complicated manner. To perform operations on images it is required to intervene on optical spatial frequency which is the field implementation of a CGH. In this paper, synthesizing such an element by a performed software on binary aspect is described and optimal parameters for improving are determined. The sensitivity of the reconstruction quality of image at high and low frequencies due to the sampling and the quantization process is identified.

With an increasing number of Electric Vehicles (EV), the optimal planning of electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) into distribution system has become more and more important. However, the problem of optimal planning is complex, nonlinear and combinatorial optimization problem. Thus a multi-objective and multivariate planning model based on hierarchic genetic algorithm (HGA) is proposed, considering the investment costs of EVCS and feeder and the energy losses and constraint conditions. The innovation points of this paper are encoding method and checking operator, changing the infeasible solutions in filial populations into feasible solutions. Finally the proposed approach is tested on 33 nodes distribution power system of IEEE with EVCS, based on the MATLAB programming language. Study results indicate the validity of this method.
