The paper presents a framework for jointly designing motion compensation, quantization and entropy coding in a hybrid video coding structure to minimize a rate distortion cost. Given motion compensation, a soft decision-based quantization algorithm is first designed to reduce the rate distortion cost by adapting quantization outputs to the baseline entropy coding method in the newest standard H.264. Motion compensation is then optimized by searching for a prediction to reduce the rate distortion cost further based on given quantization outputs. By alternating these two steps, an iterative method is then proposed. The proposed algorithms have been implemented based on the reference encoder of H.264 with complete baseline decoder compatibility. Comparative studies show that the baseline-based iterative optimization method achieves coding performance comparable, or sometimes superior, to that afforded by the main profile encoder.

In this paper, we present an integrated rate control and entropy coding (IREC) scheme for JPEG 2000. Based on an efficient heap-based rate allocation algorithm, the characteristics of image content, the subband coefficient and bitplane weighting models, and the user-specified optimization criteria, the proposed IREC scheme can selectively perform entropy coding only on those parts of image data that are likely to be included in the final bitstream. Since entropy coding is the most time and power consuming part, the IREC scheme can then reduce the overall computation and power consumption of JPEG 2000 encoding procedure. Both theoretical analysis and empirical results validate the advantages of the IREC scheme. For example, when encoding the Lenna color image with a targeted compression ratio of 128:1, compared with the separate rate control and entropy coding schemes, about 93% savings in computation and power consumption can be achieved on the entropy coding procedure.

Much of the progress in wavelet image compression came from better context modeling and entropy coding of quantized wavelet coefficients. In the past few months many papers on the subject were published. They reported rate-distortion performance results that are the best or near the best in the literature. Given seemingly ever smaller improvements on R-D performance with increasing sophistication and complexity of current R-D optimized quantizers and context models of wavelet coefficients, two tantalizing questions are whether there still exists some room for even higher coding efficiency of wavelet image coders, and if so, whether the improvement can be made with an embedded code stream. This paper sheds some lights on, and offers modestly encouraging answers to these questions.

A study of a subband-based compression algorithm for still pictures is reported. A nonuniform band splitting is performed, then each subband signal is quantized by an adaptive vector quantizer with dynamic bit allocation. The output of each vector quantizer is processed by an arithmetic coder. Simulation results are reported, and it is shown that images of size 256*256 pixels with 265 gray levels can be encoded with excellent quality at rates between 0.5 and 1 bit/pixel and with good quality at rates below 0.3 bit pixel.< >

When applied to signal quantization, it is well known that entropy coding allows to obtain results closest from the limit of the rate distorsion function, than optimum quantizers. However, the entropy coding results in a variable number of bits per signal sample. This drawback can be partially avoided by using an algorithmic procedure which allows to keep the number of bits constant per block of signal samples. In the first part of the paper, three conventional feed-forwardly adapted quantizers: namely the Block Companded PCM (BCPCM) quantizer, the Max optimum quantizer, and the optimum uniform quantizer, are briefly reminded and the algorithmic procedure of the proposed quantizer is described. Then, the performances of the four methods are compared in terms of signal to quantizing noise ratio, when operating on signals having a Laplacian probability density function, assuming various block lengths of samples, and bit rates. The quantizer using entropy coding is shown to provide significant improvements over the other quantizers. Finally, the four quantizers are incorporated in an adaptive predictive coder (APC), and used to quantize residual signals produced by inverse filtering. Again, the quantizer using entropy coding is shown to provide the best performances.

Spectral envelope modelling is a central part of speech and audio codecs and is traditionally based on either vector quantization or scalar quantization followed by entropy coding. To bridge the coding performance of vector quantization with the low complexity of the scalar case, we propose an iterative approach for entropy coding the spectral envelope parameters. For each parameter, a univariate probability distribution is derived from a Gaussian mixture model of the joint distribution and the previously quantized parameters used as a-priori information. Parameters are then iteratively and individually scalar quantized and entropy coded. Unlike vector quantization, the complexity of proposed method does not increase exponentially with dimension and bitrate. Moreover, the coding resolution and dimension can be adaptively modified without retraining the model. Experimental results show that these important advantages do not impair coding efficiency compared to a state-of-art vector quantization scheme.

For memory constrained high-order entropy coding, (i) the number of Huffman tables and (ii) the size of each Huffman table have to be appropriately reduced. Recently, we developed a Huffman table sharing and a memory allocation methods, each of which efficiently reduces either (i) or (ii) to meet the given memory constraint while keeping the increase in average bitrate as small as possible. However, given a memory constraint, the Huffman table sharing and the memory allocation methods have to be employed at the same time to achieve the better result. This paper presents several efficient schemes for combining the two methods along with simulation results.

The paper argues that the JPEG coder is based on a non-optimal entropy coding method. It is shown that for frequency domain coders using uniform quantization it is optimal to use entropy coders optimized for the entropy in each frequency component. A subband coder model with uniform quantization followed by optimal entropy coding is presented, where each subband is allocated an entropy coder based on its entropy. The theoretical coding gain limit for this model is shown to be the same as for frequency domain coders employing explicit bit allocation. However, the new model exploits the advantage associated with variable length coding. In addition, it is possible to efficiently use midtread quantizers, which have higher mean square error performance and, more important, better visual performance than midrise quantizers. Advantages for practical subband image coders are discussed in the paper.< >
