As a latest video compression coding standard, the H.264/AVC has significant improvement in coding efficiency compared with the previous H.263, MPEG-4 coding standards, but the large amount of motion estimation greatly affect the coding complexity. In order to reduce the time of motion estimation, the UMHexagonS and EPZS algorithm in JM test model of H.264 coding standard are close analyzed in this paper, meanwhile combining with the advantages of the two algorithms, improving the new SAD of the motion estimation and adaptive all-zero blocks processing. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm greatly reduced the motion estimation time and complexity while maintaining coding efficiency.

Variable length code (VLC) is used in a large variety of lossless compression applications. A specially designed VLC, called "universal variable length code" (UVLC), is utilized in the latest video coding standard H.26L under development. In this work we propose a coding method that we call "alternating coding" (ALT coding) for UVLC. An efficient UVLC decoder is designed (ALT decoder) on the basis of it. ALT coding facilitates a much easier decoding scheme for UVLC. It frees the decoder from codeword tables and the sizes of the barrel shifters are reduced. The codeword tables and barrel shifters usually occupy the largest portion of the area in the traditional VLC decoders and they are also performance limiting in terms of speed and power consumption. We compare the ALT decoder with one of the most efficient VLC decoders called "VLC decoder using plane separation" (PLS). Our results show that the ALT decoder increases 257% in speed, decreases 41% in size, and consumes 45% power of the PLS decoder.

The perceptual subband image coder (PIC) introduced by Safranek and Johnston (1989), selects a noise target level for each subband based on an empirically derived perceptual masking measure. These noise target levels are used to set the quantization level in the DPCM quantizer for every particular subband. It achieves high quality output at bit rates from 0.1 to 0.9 bits/pixel (bpp) depending on the complexity of the image. In this paper, we present an algorithm that locally adapts the quantizer step size at each pixel according to an estimate of the masking measure. This estimate is based on the already coded pixels and predictions of the not yet coded pixels. Compared to the PIC, the proposed method does not require any additional side information. In fact, it eliminates the need to transmit the quantizer step size for each subband. For comparable perceptual quality, the proposed method achieves compression gains up to 40 percent. Typical values are in the order of 20 to 30 percent, depending on the nature of the image. Our algorithm has also better performance for supra-threshold image compression since the perceptual error is distributed more evenly and is not concentrated in the most sensitive regions.

In this paper, we present a scalable entropy-constrained vector quantizer based on Gaussian mixture models (GMMs), lattice quantization, and arithmetic coding. We assume that the source has a probability density function of a GMM. The scheme is based on a mixture component classifier, the Karhunen Loeve transform of the component, followed by a lattice quantization. The scalar elements of the quantized vector are entropy coded using a specially designed arithmetic coder. The proposed scheme has a computational complexity that is independent of rate, and quadratic with respect to vector dimension. The design is flexible and allows for adjusting the desired target rate on-the-fly. We evaluated the performance of the proposed scheme on speech-derived source vectors. It was demonstrated that the proposed scheme outperforms a fixed-rate GMM based vector quantizer, and performs closely to the theoretical optimum.

Scalable video coding is applied to meet the heterogeneity of networks, fluctuation of bandwidth, and diversity of end users. But if the base layer is damaged or missed, the scalable video coding will no longer be effective. To address this problem, a scalable multiple description of video is proposed based on the bit plane and rate allocation of scalable wavelet video coding in an error-prone transmission environment. After spatiotemporal transformation, three-dimensional bit planes of the wavelet frame are sampled in odd and even order except the most significant bit to generate multiple descriptions, which are encoded into scalable video streaming by using entropy coding and Lagragian rate allocation. Combined with multiple path transport, the performance of proposed scalable multiple description coding is demonstrated in Ns2.

We propose an image compression algorithm for the progressive transmission of medical images. Our algorithm permits the user to interactively specify arbitrary portions of a medical image for transmission at various levels of resolution up to lossless. The algorithm is adaptive and is based on quadtree segmentation followed by entropy coding.

A theory is proposed for how to design minimum mean square error (MSE) filter banks for lossy source coding when uniform quantizers and ideal entropy coding are used to compress the subband signals. A signal-dependent correlation model is used to find the auto and cross correlation between the additive quantization noise within the same subband and across different subbands. This theory also shows how to find the cross correlation between the original time-series and the additive quantization noise. The simulation results show that the proposed way of designing the filter banks outperforms the minimum MSE performance results found by using the classical signal independent high-rate quantization noise model.

Sample adaptive offset (SAO) is applied for reducing sample distortion and attenuating ringing artifacts in both HEVC and VVC standards. The rate-distortion optimization process is used to select the best SAO parameter. It accounts for the majority of SAO complexity and determines the SAO filtering performance. Therefore, the rate-distortion cost calculation should be well handled to achieve both low cost and high coding performance. In this paper, we propose a simplified and optimized rate estimation algorithm based on the characteristics of SAO parameter syntax and entropy coding process. And we propose a hierarchical flow for rate-distortion cost calculation to further reduce the computational cost and storage cost for SAO mode decision hardware. The results show that the proposed algorithm achieves an average YUV loss of -0.10%, and the proposed SAO mode decision hardware architecture can be implemented by only 21.8k gates using TSMC 65nm process under 400 MHz.

In the paper we propose a new lossless video coding system utilizing both Motion Compensated Temporal Filtering (MCTF) and integer wavelet transform techniques to explore data redundancy in both spatial and temporal domain, respectively. We elaborate the design issues such MCTF scheme, filter selection, group of picture size, wavelet coefficient coding, and develop an efficient coding system. Simulation results show that the proposed system using 1/3 filter has the best coding performance. The bit rate saving is over 20% compared with lossless still image coder such as JPEG-LS. The saving is also around 10% when compared with other wavelet based lossless video coder.

MPEG-4 Visual Texture coding (VTC) was recently adopted as an image coding technique using a wavelet-based approach. For images with significant texture and sharp contrast, MPEG-4 VTC spreads the signal energy over several wavelet trees. To improve the coding efficiency of zerotree entropy coding, we propose a double transformation coding (DTC) approach. The wavelet trees are reorganized as a sequence of wavelet blocks, which are categorized into four groups where the similarity among the blocks within a group is increased. For each class, we use an adaptive Karhunen Loeve Transform (KLT) bases to predict the quantized AC coefficients of the same class. The classification process is based on the variances of the quantized DC coefficients considering the spatial orientation. Thus, the classification information can be computed at the decoder. At the same time, the property of continuous scalability is maintained using the new approach. For the same bitrate we found that the DTC achieved a coding gain over MPEG-4 VTC by about 0.5-1.0 dB in PSNR.
