Recent approaches to compression of deep neural networks, like the emerging standard on compression of neural networks for multimedia content description and analysis (MPEG-7 part 17), apply scalar quantization and entropy coding of the quantization indexes. In this paper we present an advanced method for quantization of neural network parameters, which applies dependent scalar quantization (DQ) or trellis-coded quantization (TCQ), and an improved context modeling for the entropy coding of the quantization indexes. We show that the proposed method achieves 5.778% bitrate reduction and virtually no loss (0.37%) of network performance in average, compared to the baseline methods of the second test model (NCTM) of MPEG-7 part 17 for relevant working points.

This paper presents CRICM (Cross point Regions for lossless Image Compression on Multiple bit planes), an algorithm for losslessly encoding and decoding images, especially medical images, by optimizing on the probability of bits on different bit planes of cross points that are neighbor points of grey levels 2". Based on Gray coding, Gray codes of cross points are determined on an adjacent data set because images characteristically contain data that does not change much in a specific area; then this effect is generalized for real data without losing generality for their statistical properties. This is especially true for medical images that have many regions with the same grey levels. The Gray code transformation makes the bit states of cross points change from the original data bits, so first the probabilities of data bits on specific bit planes in cross point regions and then the entropies of the messages are changed. These probabilities are estimated and compared with the probabilities of the original data bits. This change of probability has important effects on the encoding and decoding processes in lossless medical image compression.

The shortcomings of sparse representation of remote sensing images and the on-board post-transform-based image compression algorithm are analyzed. In this paper, an improved posttransform based compression algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is improved in terms of computational complexity, optimal post-transform basis selection and post-transform entropy coding algorithm. Experimental results show that the improved compression algorithm has higher compression performance, compared with the traditional compression algorithm, the SNR is improved 0.3-1.1dB. Which effectively solves the problem of sparse representation of wavelet transform and low efficiency of post-transform. And suitable for on-board CCD camera applications.

Space missions are increasingly requiring high resolution imagery and, hence, high data compression-two tasks which are inherently incompatible. A tradeoff must, therefore, be made between the available bandwidth and achievable resolution. An efficient visual communication channel-the process from image acquisition to image display-is key to the efficient transmission of the high resolution data. Our algorithm uses wavelet decomposition followed by entropy coding for compression as an integral part of the design of the visual communication channel, where the encoding process constitutes an additional noise source. This allows the development of analysis and synthesis filters which depend not only on the wavelet function, but also on the critical factors which constrain the visual communication channel itself. We feel that this approach is essential in designing a channel which provides the most information, and hence the highest resolution, for the least data.

One of the more effective data compression systems that has been recently proposed is the relatively simple embedded wavelet image coder developed by J.M. Shapiro (1994). Two key components of Shapiro's system are the use of zerotrees to keep track of insignificant subband coefficients and progressive transmission of successive bit planes of significant coefficients. Shapiro's quantization mechanism is the use of scaled successive approximation uniform scalar quantizers. This paper investigates ways of improving the performance of embedded wavelet coders with the use of optimized successive approximation direct sum quantization structures.

Through recent wireless technologies, such as Centralized Radio Access Network, baseband unit aid remote radio heads are physically separated and connected using fronthaul links. Compressing complex baseband signal samples prior transmission over fronthaul link is an effective Way to satisfy the pressing need to decrease the huge required transported data rates. In this paper, we analyze the easting IQ data compression schemes exploiting time and spectral signal characteristics. We consider compression system evaluation parameters to have a smooth trade-off between required signal quality and complexity performance while achieving an acceptable compression gain. We propose an optimized uniform quantization technique combined with entropy coding achieving non-uniform quantization performance by exploiting signal temporal statistical characteristics with much less computational complexity. We also present a comparison between simulation results analyzing the trade-off between the removal of the signal spectral redundancies and vector quantization in terms of performance and complexity.

entropy coding, as used for lossless compression in image coding, is dominated by serial bit processing and recursive conditional branches. Digital signal processors (DSPs), in which pipeline processors play a central role, fail to yield adequate performance for this kind of application. This paper focuses on arithmetic coding in order to design a high speed and fully programmable entropy codec using a high-level behavioral description based LSI-CAD system. The design of the arithmetic encoder and decoder with the hardware description language is detailed as well as the simulations performed on this design. The results concerning the logic synthesis show that this approach attains complete success for practical applications and ensures flexible hardware design involving relatively complicated functions within reasonable time and cost requirements.< >

The major complexity source in H.264 is the rate distortion (R-D) optimization. This work proposes a method to reduce the complexity of R-D analysis, paying a little video degradation, by estimating the encoding modes that are more likely used by the encoder. Since the encoding modes depend mainly on the typology of the video and on the quantization parameter used to encode each block, the work proposes to group the modes into subsets that depend on the quantizer level and the characteristics of the video. In particular, the motion compensability of each frame modulates the intra modes, while texture difficulty addresses the inter modes. The R-D algorithm evaluates only the modes included into the resulting subset. The usage of subset modes reduces the complexity of the encoding process (40-70%) with respect to the original R-D optimized encoder, with a slight PSNR reduction (0-0,30 dB).

The basic building blocks of most state-of the art source coders are: a linear transformation; scalar quantization of the transform coefficients; probability modeling of the sequence of quantization indices; an entropy coding stage. The weakness of conventional separated source-channel coding approaches lies in the catastrophic behavior of the entropy coding stage. Hence, we replace this stage with linear coding, that maps directly the sequence of redundant quantizer output symbols into a channel codeword. We show that this approach does not entail any loss of optimality in the asymptotic regime of large block length. Furthermore, for practical block lengths and moderate complexity, our approach yields very significant improvements. We develop a full implementation example based on the JPEG2000 image coder and punctured turbo codes. The gain over a conventional separated scheme is demonstrated by extensive numerical experiments on test images.

JPEG-XR is a still-image compression standard with high compression ratio and low computation cost. It supports lossy and lossless coding for still images. To further improve the compression performance of JPEG-XR in both lossy and lossless modes, in this paper, we propose an improved JPEGXR by using gradient-based coefficient prediction (JPEG-XRGCP). The proposed JPEG-XR-GCP predicts the coefficients based on the estimating of local gradients, and predicts the value of coefficients adaptively by using its neighboring and secondorder neighboring coefficients in gradients. The experimental evaluations demonstrate that our proposed coding scheme has a better compression performance in both lossy and lossless modes compared with the original JPEG-XR.
