Context-based Adaptive Variable Length coding（CAVLC） as a new entropy coding algorithm has been introduced into H264/AVC standardThrough analysing the CAVLC coding algorithm detailedly,the paper proposes an overlapping coverage storage method and a new stream merger method,and gives the specific implementationThis idea improves the structure and performance of the complex module and reduces the implementation complexityThe experimental results show that the proposed entropy encoder is correct,and the highest coding frequency of8170 MHz can be achievedMeanwhile all the hardware resource consumption is less than 2%of total hardware resourcesThe new entropy encoder achieves a better balance in system performance and resource consumption

This paper discusses pattern matching problem on Variable-to-Fixed-length codes (VF codes). A VF code is a coding scheme whose codeword lengths are fixed, and thus it is suitable for comprssed pattern matching. However, there are few reports showing its efficiency so far. We have investigated into the compression ratios and encoding/decoding speeds besides pattern matching performance on Tunstall codes and STVF codes. We have also done how an entropy coding affects to VF codes. In our experiments, we tested Huffman coding and Range coding for entropy codings.

As a latest video compression coding standard, the H.264/AVC has significant improvement in coding efficiency compared with the previous H.263, MPEG-4 coding standards, but the large amount of motion estimation greatly affect the coding complexity. In order to reduce the time of motion estimation, the UMHexagonS and EPZS algorithm in JM test model of H.264 coding standard are close analyzed in this paper, meanwhile combining with the advantages of the two algorithms, improving the new SAD of the motion estimation and adaptive all-zero blocks processing. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm greatly reduced the motion estimation time and complexity while maintaining coding efficiency.

In order to reduce the bit rate and to improve the compression performance in video coding in H.264, this paper presents more scanning patterns for entropy coding. Firstly, we investigate the two designs of entropy coding, termed CA VLC and CABAC. And then according to the DCT transform, we deduce that it is possible to adopt more scanning patterns in entropy coding in H.264 to reduce the coding gain at the cost of bit rate. So this paper deduces some different features of an original or residual block, and proposes eight scanning patterns for entropy coding and the corresponding pattern decision method. In the pattern decision method, we make a full search according to the bit rate cost to select the best pattern out of all scanning patterns. Experimental results based on the H.264 JIT reference software of JM 10.1 show that employing the proposed scanning patterns bit rate reduction by up to 4~7% will be obtained with neglectable computation complexity increased and a better performance is also obtained.

This contribution presents a basic structure of video compression coder based on Three Dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (3D DCT). Mainly, this paper deals with a optimal method of forming the 3D DCT frequency coefficients into output bit stream. It is well known the number of non zero frequency coefficients depends on the video sequence character. The sequence with a slow motion evokes a low number of coefficients and vice versa the dynamic sequence produces a high number of frequency coefficients, thus the compress ratio of an encoded sequence tends to be low. It could be proved the compress properties of 3D DCT encoder do not depends only on scene character but can be improved by the entropy coder and by the way how the coefficients are scanned. The scanning order optimized for the 3D DCT and a content of the dictionary for Huffman coder is proposed in this paper.

Existing video encoders, such as MPEG4, H.263 and H.264, adopt variable length coding (VLC) as entropy coding method, focusing on residue data coding. In low bit-rate video coding, larger quantization parameters are used to give a smaller number of bits spent on residue data. As a result, the header overhead is a dominant factor of yielding the overall bit rates. In this paper, macro-block (MB) header behavior is investigated. It is found that the relative percentage of the number of bits of MB header increases with quantization parameter (QP) and header correlation between neighboring MBs is high. Based on these MB header properties, we propose an advanced coding algorithm for entropy coding of MB header. The experimental results suggest that our proposed algorithm achieves lower total number of encoded bits over JM10.2, up to 10% bit reduction, with the same PSNR quality. At the same bit rates, our algorithm has about 0.3-0.4 dB PSNR gain.

The variable-length coding (VLC) is widely used in video coding to improve compression efficiency. However, suffering from the loss of synchronization, VLC bit stream is much more sensitive to random errors than fixed-length coding (FLC) bit stream. The EREC is a valid tool combating random errors in VLC bit stream. Due to its intrinsic property of error propagation, when the EREC is applied to video bit stream, those blocks placed later become much more likely to be lost. This paper proposes a simple method to further improve the error robustness of video bit stream by interleaving transform coefficients of blocks so that low-frequency information is always placed ahead of high-frequency information. Thus, low-frequency information of greater significance is less likely to be lost. Experimental results prove the superiority of the proposed method. In addition, block interleaving can also be used in data-partitioned video bit stream with ease.

In this paper, we propose a rank-based image transformation scheme which is a pre-processing method for enabling more efficient compression of gray-level images by entropy encoder. For this, before we do entropy encoding on a stream of gray-level values in an image, the proposed method counts co-occurrence frequencies for neighboring pixel values. Then, it replaces each gray value with particularly ordered numbers based on the co-occurrence frequencies. Finally, the ordered number are transmitted to an entropy encoder. The pre-processing step enhances the statistical characteristic of the image transformation and thus improves the performance of entropy coding considerably. The result from our simulation using 8 bits gray-scale images shows that the proposed method can reduce bit rate by up to 37.85% compared with existing plain entropy coders.

Lossless image coding is a important research field for multimedia store and digital library. H.264 provides a better compression rate than the JPEG-LS based on intra prediction and entropy coding (CABAC and CAVLC). In this paper, we suggest that entropy coding should be adaptively adopted for various image content variations(ICV) to increase H.264-LS compression rate. The ICV is obtained by existing intra prediction residue values in our proposed method. In the meantime, we add the (5, 3) discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for higher ICV images after executing 4times4 intra prediction to increase H.264-LS compression rate again. Simulation results show that using the adaptive entropy coding has 97% correct rate and 8.7% compression rate improvement than used single entropy coding. If add the (5, 3) DWT filtering again, we can at least obtain 2.3% compression rate than the adaptive entropy coding.

This paper presents the design of a hardware architecture for the entropy coder of H.264/AVC video compression standard, considering the baseline profile. The baseline entropy coder is composed of two main blocks: Exp-Golomb coder and CAVLC coder. This paper presents the architectural design of these two blocks. These architectures were described in VHDL and synthesized to an Altera Stratix-II FPGA. From the synthesis results it was possible to verify that the Exp-Golomb and CAVLC coders reached a throughput of 15.9 million of samples per second for the Exp-Golomb coder and of 103.8 million of samples per second for CAVLC coder. The H.264/AVC baseline entropy coder is being designed through the integration of these two coders and preliminary results indicate that this solution will be able to process HDTV frames in real time.
