Existing video coding standards always employ line-based intra prediction for intra frame coding. However, it sometimes does not perform well for the bottom-right boundary pixels due to the low correlation with the referenced pixels. In this paper, we propose a novel joint line and pixel prediction (JLPP) method to compensate the performance degradation of boundary pixels. In JLPP, each block is partitioned into two subblocks, including a P-subblock covering bottom and right pixels and a L-subblock comprising the rest pixels. L-subblock will firstly be predicted and coded in a similar way to H.264/AVC intra coding. Secondly, a gradient-adjusted prediction scheme is applied to P-subblock with the aid of the reconstructed pixels in L-subblock. Therefore, the reconstruction qualities of the boundary pixels used to predict the subsequent blocks can be enhanced. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a PSNR gain of up to 0.63dB compared with H.264/AVC intra coding.

Fast evolving digital imaging on embedded devices imposes need for fast, energy efficient and flexible encoder implementation. In this paper we present fully software implementation of JPEG XR encoder on heterogeneous multiprocessor platform consisting of one VLIW+SIMD processor used for compute-intensive parts of the algorithm. Achieved performance is between fully software implementation on general purpose processor and fully hardware implementation, with flexibility of fully software implementation.

Summary form only given. A pseudo-random sequence generator (PRNG), L12RC4, inspired by the LZSS compression algorithm and RC4 stream cipher, was presented and implemented. In LZSS, the encoded file consists of a sequence of items, each of which is either a single character (literal) or a pointer of the form (index, length). The probability distributions of the literal, length and flag bit values are different from uniform, it is worth to coding them using an entropy coding such as the Huffman or the arithmetic coding. However, the index value is defined not only by the context of data stream but also by its temporal position in the window, it has uniform or near uniform probability distribution, so we can use this characteristics to design a pseudo-random number generator.

JPEG2000 is the international image coding standard. AVC/H.264 is the latest video coding standard and its I-Frame coding can also be used for image coding. In this paper we compare the coding performance of JPEG2000 and AVC I-Frame coding. First, we discuss the basic techniques of their coding schemes and encoder parameter settings. Second, compressions are performed on images with different resolution and texture complexity. Finally we discuss the experimental results. In this study, we have not considered computation complexity and scalability, as well as other JPEG2000 features.

Context-based adaptive variable-length coding (CAVLC) is a new and important feature of the latest video coding standard H.264/AVC. Together with Exp-Golomb(which is also called UVLC), CAVLC is used to code source data, i.e., quantized transformed coefficients (QTCs), and header data, respectively. In this paper, a hardware architecture for CAVLC and Exp- Golomb in the H.264/AVC codec is proposed, the main concept is the three-stage block pipelining scheme for this architecture. The simulation results show that our CAVLC and Exp-Golomb system can run at 31.2 MHz and 156.6 MHz clock frequency respectively.

As multicore processors have become a general in computer architecture, parallel algorithms and software designs based on thread-level parallelization are rapidly gaining importance in compute-intensive applications. However, it is difficult to exploit thread-level parallelism for multimedia applications like video encoders due to complicated data/control dependences. In particular, the H.264 encoder has data dependences between the inter mode decision and the intra mode decision, especially when rate-distortion optimization (RDO) is used. This paper proposes a new RDO mode decision algorithm based on thread-level parallelization for the H.264 encoder, which can efficiently resolve the dependences and exploit thread-level parallelism for fast mode decision. The proposed methods, slipstreaming and skipping mechanisms reduce the total encoding time without PSNR loss and bit rate increment. These mechanisms can remove most of computation overhead for RDO intra mode decision as well as improve the computational performance of motion estimation. The experiments performed with JM12.2 showed that the proposed method reduces the total encoding time by 31.3% on average while maintaining the identical PSNR and bit rate.

In this paper, a fast RDO quantization algorithm for H.264/AVC is proposed. In this algorithm, we consider that each quantized coefficient of level / may take one of the three possible levels / or I-I or / + 1 for output, thus 316 combinations need to be tested for a 4x4 block. To reduce the searching space of level adjustments, the input quantized coefficients are filtered in a hierarchical way. Firstly, the well quantized coefficients are filtered out by comparing an adaptive threshold value with the absolute difference of transformed coefficients and the reconstructed coefficients. Secondly, the RD tradeoff of each level adjustment to each of the rest coefficients is examined to select some good coefficient candidates with their associated level adjustments. In this step, a fast rate estimation technique [3] is adopted for fast evaluation of the RD tradeoff for a single level adjustment. Finally, these good candidates are sorted in the descending order according to their associated ratedistortion tradeoff gain evaluated in the second step. The top M of them are selected and combined to find the best combination which gives the minimal rate-distortion cost.

This paper proposes the design and VLSI implement of high efficient Context-based Adaptive Variable Length coding (CAVLC) encoder which adopted a modified Variable Length coding (VLC) look up table technique and parallel processing. The proposed CAVLC encoder used upper and under buffer as input buffer to perform zigzag scanning with both way ordering. Because of this, the proposed CAVLC encoder can be read and write concurrently. Moreover, we design the CAVLC encoder procedure with parallel processing which uses two generators for information signals and control signals to operate CAVLC modules such as a coeff_token (TotalCeff and TrailingOnes) module, a level module, a total_zeros module, and a run_before module. The proposed CAVLC is prototyped in Verilog-HDL, implemented and synthesized with megnachip 0.18 μm CMOS tech. The synthesis result shows that the gate count is about 12K with the clock constraint of 140Mhz. The proposed CAVLC encoder is suitable for real-time video applications.

This paper describes an efficient entropy coding method for macroblock modes in H.264 based on the statistical information of the previous frame. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video coding introduces some new macroblock sub-types (modes) that allow for better rate-distortion (R-D) coding. These modes are coded with a fixed mapping table when context adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) is used. Based on our experiments on the sequences recommended by the Video coding Experts Group (VCEG) common test conditions, the average number of bits to code those modes is 15% of that of the total bits for coding P-frames. The proposed method maps the more frequently used modes to shorter codeword instead of using a fixed mapping table, and reduces about 10-20% of the bits used for coding the inter modes. This method can be applied to other syntax elements, e.g. coded block pattern (CBP), as well.

Currently the ASIC applications such as multimedia processing require shorter time-to-market and higher performance. Furthermore, with the IC manufacturing technology developing continually, from transistor level to logic gate level, the size of standard cells in digital circuits is increasing correspondingly. New methodology should be proposed to meet the need for shorter time-to-market IC industry, and the requirement of advanced IC manufacturing technology. This paper proposed the concept and principle of operator design methodology, then focused on the entropy coding application by the reconfigurable operator and finally gave the synthesis data. The results show that compared with the hardware design at the same cost of resources, this methodology can obtain hardware of suitable performance with regular structure. What is more, it can improve the design speed efficiently.
