Building models and model mesh simplification multiresolution storage mechanism is the key for three-dimensional navigation widely used. This paper proposed a mesh simplification and multiresolution storage compression algorithm based on the model of edge collapse operations. First of all, it used an artificial interact method to set the protected feature points and grids and updated a series of partial model, and then simplified the three-dimensional model incremental and removal of unwanted vertex and grid, Finally entropy coding the storage part of the progressive to achieve a multi-resolution compressed storage.

Quantization in H.264 is achieved in the DCT domain using scalar quantizers, which assume a sum distortion constraint and often produce considerably larger distortions on block boundaries than inside a block in the pixel domain. This biased distortion distribution degrades the rate distortion (RD) performance of H.264 intra coding whose prediction is exclusively based on boundary pixels. This paper considers the problem of designing balanced distortion quantizers (BDQs) in the DCT domain, which, in addition to the sum distortion constraint, require evenly distributed distortions in the pixel domain. In a special case where DCT coefficients are independent Gaussian, the problem is solved as a convex optimization problem. Using this approach, we design BDQs and apply them to improve H.264 intra coding. Experimental results on typical frames show that the improved intra coding scheme consistently outperforms its counterpart in H.264 main-profile, averaging 5-9% rate reduction for QCIF frames, and 7-12% for CIF frames with aligned distortions.

In this work, we propose a high efficiency hardware architecture of embedded sub-band coding with optimal truncation (ESCOT) with word-level pass concurrent context modeling (Word-Level PCCM) scheme for wavelet-based scalable video coding (SVC). Word-Level PCCM can merge the three-pass process of bit-plane coding into a single pass process. It improves the efficiency of the ESCOT algorithm and reduces the memory requirement and the memory access frequency. Furthermore the parallel architecture scheme for Word-Level PCCM can encode 8 samples concurrently. We use the Artison TSMC 0.18 mum 1P6M standard cell library to design and implement the proposed Word-Level PCCM. The simulation results indicate that the Word-Level PCCM can operate for 1080p with frame rate of 60 fps at clock rate of 125 MHz.

The lossy video coding is a key technology to compress the video to become very low bit rate data and H.264/AVC standard performs very well in lossy coding. However, the lossless image and video coding still plays an important role, especially in medical applications. Hence, the lossless coding in use of H.264/AVC gains a lot of attentions. In this paper, we introduce simplified interpolations to replace the sample-by-sample DPCM concept, which uses the nearer pixel as the prediction for certain modes to achieve better coding efficiency. The proposed predictions are applied to all intra prediction modes suggested in H.264/AVC. Moreover, the luma/chroma dc blocks reduction can also reduce the syntax elements for entropy coding. With these proposed algorithms, the compression performance of the H.264/AVC lossless intra coding is greatly improved.

The video tool library (VTL) is one of the major normative components of the reconfigurable video coding (RVC) standard. It specifies the set of functional units (FUs) that may be interchangeably combined and connected to form different video codecs, with various compression performances and implementation complexities. In this paper, an efficient AVC baseline encoder that is described in CAL is introduced. The encoder is composed of many modules that also exist in other codecs of the same or different standards. This makes them highly reusable within the RVC framework. The main modules of the designed encoder include: Inter Prediction, Intra Prediction, and entropy coding. Brief descriptions of the designed modules, accompanied with CAL design issues are provided.

We present a lightweight lossless compression algorithm for realtime sensor networks. Our proposed adaptive linear filtering compression (ALFC) algorithm performs predictive compression, using adaptive linear filtering to predict sample values followed by entropy coding of prediction residuals, encoding a variable number of samples into fixed-length packets. Adaptive prediction eliminates the need to determine prediction coefficients a priori and, more importantly, allows compression to dynamically adjust to a changing source. The algorithm requires only integer arithmetic operations and thus is compatible with sensor platforms that do not support floating-point operations. Significant robustness to packets losses is provided by including small but sufficient overhead data to allow samples in each packet to be independently decoded. Real-world evaluations on seismic data from a wireless sensor network testbed show that ALFC provides more effective compression and uses less resources than some other lossless compression approaches such as S-LZW. Experiments in a multi-hop sensor network also show that ALFC can significantly improve raw data throughput and energy efficiency.

The ultimate goal of video compression is to provide best visual quality of the video source by using minimum bit budget. To achieve this target, spatial, temporal and perceptual redundancies should be exploited and removed such that the video source could be compressed efficiently. In this paper, we present how to improve the video compression performance by using a foveated just-noticeable-distortion model. Since the perceptual acuity decreases with the increased eccentricity, a foveation model is developed to exploit the global perceptual redundancy in addition to the spatial and temporal just-noticeable-distortion models. The foveated just-noticeable-distortion model is incorporated into the H.264/AVC video coding system. As demonstrated in the subjective tests, applying the proposed model in video coding can improve visual quality.

JPEG-XR is a new image compression standard that aims at achieving state-of-the-art image compression, while simultaneously keeping the encoder and decoder complexities as low as possible. JPEG-XR is based on Microsoft technology known as HDPHOTO and makes use of a block-transform. This transform, known as Lapped Biorthogonal Transform (LBT), requires only a small memory footprint while providing the compression benefits of a larger block transform. In this work, we propose to replace the LBT by a representation in Legendre orthogonal polynomial basis. The motivation behind using the Legendre polynomials is that, in general, moment functions of orthogonal polynomials provide better feature representations over other type of moments and have some properties related to the human visual system (HVS). However, Legendre polynomials have a unit weight function and recurrence relation involving real coefficients, which make them suitable for defining image representation. We show that the expansion in Legendre polynomial basis can be implemented via lifting operations and has the same computation complexity as the LBT. The experimental evaluation of our modified JPEG-XR scheme shows beneficial improvements in terms of visual quality over the standard JPEG-XR.

This paper presents a VLSI architecture of CABAC decoder for H.264/AVC level 5.1 applications. It adopts a symbol-prediction-based decision engine with extra-bypass decoding support, a four-stage bypass engine, along with dedicated arithmetic decoding modes to increase the throughput rate. It also reduces the context model access time significantly by applying context pre-fetch register set. The proposed design can decode an average of 1.08 bins per cycle, and can be operated at a maximum frequency of 333MHz using SMIC 0.13¿m technology. Therefore, it is able to provide a throughput of 360Mbins/s, and hence can meet the requirements of Level 5.1 in H.264/AVC standard.

The residual signal gained after motion estimation needs to be transformed and quantized prior to entropy coding in H.264/AVC. In many cases, especially in low bitrate situation, the probability that obtain all zero quantized coefficients block (AZB) is high. In this paper, we study the characteristics of 4×4 integer transform first, and then we use the divide and rule strategy to inverse the formulae of integer transform and quantization. By this way, we get a new sufficient condition for AZB detection. The experiment results show that our algorithm can find out more AZBs compared with existing methods without any loss and save more computations at the same time.
