3D mesh compression has been studies for compact storage and fast transmission of large 3D meshes for a variety of graphics applications. However, there is still much redundancy not well exploited by the previous works, e. g., the redundancy lying in the floating-point data texture coordinates. This paper investigates the statistical property of texture coordinates of a couple of 3D models and proposes a new entropy coding method to compress the floating-point texture coordinates of 3D mesh. It uses some reference buffers and proposes an updating scheme as well as a context based arithmetic coding algorithm. Experiments show that the proposed method can averagely reduce about 40% of bitrate compared with the state-of-art prior work.

Spectral envelope modelling is a central part of speech and audio codecs and is traditionally based on either vector quantization or scalar quantization followed by entropy coding. To bridge the coding performance of vector quantization with the low complexity of the scalar case, we propose an iterative approach for entropy coding the spectral envelope parameters. For each parameter, a univariate probability distribution is derived from a Gaussian mixture model of the joint distribution and the previously quantized parameters used as a-priori information. Parameters are then iteratively and individually scalar quantized and entropy coded. Unlike vector quantization, the complexity of proposed method does not increase exponentially with dimension and bitrate. Moreover, the coding resolution and dimension can be adaptively modified without retraining the model. Experimental results show that these important advantages do not impair coding efficiency compared to a state-of-art vector quantization scheme.

DRA (Digital Rise Audio) is referred to as specification for multi-channel digital audio coding technology which was issued as a Chinese national standard in 2008. There novel algorithms which are the differential Huffman, context-based Huffman and context-based arithmetic entropy coding, respectively, are presented to improve the compression efficiency of DRA entropy coding with 3%, 11.11% and 13.52% at the expense of the different implementing complexities and the intra-frame and/or inter-frame error propagation in live transmission.

entropy coding, which acts as one of the most important compression tools in video coding standard, had been improved step by step for HEVC. There are also several advanced methods which provide better performance than current solutions of HEVC proposed during the standardization of HEVC. However, these methods are all tested in different conditions. Comprehensive evaluation of these advanced methods under a common scenario is desired to indicate where the potential improvement of entropy coding may come from for next generation video codec. In this paper, we first introduce several advanced entropy coding methods for DCT transform coefficients, which aim to improve CABAC performance from two aspects - context modeling and probability updating. Then some modifications based on these original ones are presented. Comprehensive comparison of these methods is conducted under common test conditions. Besides, some combined methods of these two aspects are also tested. Experimental results show that all individual approaches can achieve coding gain and two new combined methods can reduce the BD-Rate up to 1.7%, 1.2% and 1.0% on common test sequences and 1.4%, 1.0% and 1.1% on 4K sequences under all intra, random access and low delay configurations, respectively.

In the conventional range asymmetric numeral systems (rANS), state $x$ becomes larger after encoding a symbol $s$. In contrast, the proposed scheme directly outputs an $n$-bit digit $cdf_{s}+x\\ (\\text{mod}\\ f_{s})$ for symbol $s$, and decrease $x$ via $x\\leftarrow\\lfloor x/f_{s}\\rfloor$, where $2^{n}$ denotes the denominator of the quantized frequency distribution, $f_{s}$ and $cdf_{s}= \\sum\\nolimits_{i=0}^{s-1}f_{i}$ represent the frequency of symbol $s$ and the cumulative frequency counts, respectively. Therefore, $x$ will become too small after encoding several symbols. To solve this issue, our proposal forces the state $x$ always at a specific interval $I= [2^{T-vn}, 2^{T})$, and $I_{s}:=\\left[f_{s}\\times 2^{T-vn}, 2^{T}\\right)$ indicates the interval corresponding to symbol $s$, where $T, v\\in \\mathbb{N}$. The specific algorithm can be implemented based on the deque. Precisely, for a symbol $s$ to be encoded, if the current $x$ is within $I_{s}$, we encode it to an $n$-bit digit $cdf_{s}+x\\ (\\text{mod}\\ f_{s})$ and push the digit to deque. Otherwise, we first pop data from the deque to enlarge $x$ before encoding. Finally, the remaining data in the deque is the desired encoded bit sequence.

The demand for video processing, storage, and transmission is a topic of growing interest due to the impacts it has on our everyday lives, whether for work or entertainment. Video coding formats arise to cope with the intrinsically related issue, allowing a better compromise between coding efficiency and video quality. Versatile Video coding (VVC) is the state-of-the-art standard currently available, where its compression capabilities come at the cost of an increased computational complexity. For that matter, a hardware design targeting VVC is suitable for accelerating its processing. Two of its core components are Residual coding and entropy coding. Thus, one may wonder how to better understand these steps and provide a tailored hardware design for them. To answer these questions, this work conducted statistical analyses to derive future hardware implementations of the VVC blocks. In addition, based on the statistical findings, this work introduces a partial hardware design for VVC Residual Syntax Elements coding.

Multiterminal source coding (MT source coding) considers the problem of compressing two or more correlated sources in a distributive manner. While the problem has been introduced for more than 30 years, most studies on implementing MT source coding have been focused on a few sources. Moreover, many prior works follow the implementation paradigm of quantization followed by Slepian-Wolf coding. In this paper, we take a different approach and tackle the Gaussian MT source coding with many (100) terminals by utilizing entropy coding and regression alone. We compare the scheme with the theoretical lower bound assuming joint encoding and upper bound when correlation is ignored. The experimental results suggest that scheme works well at low rate but the gap from the theoretical lower bound widens as rate increases.

Applications such as wireless displays, automotive infotainment, remote desktop, remote gaming, distance education, cloud computing etc. are becoming popular. Video in these applications often has mixed content consisting of natural video and screen content (text, graphics etc.) in the same picture. In text and graphics regions, patterns such as text characters, icons, lines etc. can repeat within a picture. Also since the graphics and text regions have sharp edges that are sometimes not predicted well by Intra prediction tools, the probability of prediction error having high amplitude increases. This paper presents two tools for improving the intra coding efficiency of the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard when coding screen content. The first tool is a coding Unit (CU)-level Intra motion compensation tool to eliminate redundancy from repeating patterns in text and graphics regions. The second tool is a modification to HEVC cRiceParam update process of coeff_abs_level_remaining entropy coding to adapt better to larger prediction errors in text and graphics regions. The combination of the two tools achieves an average bit-rate/Bjontegaard Delta-Rate savings in the range of 0.8% to 28.1% over HEVC Range Extensions Test Model on screen content test video sequences used in Range Extensions core experiments by the Joint Collaborative Team for Video coding (JCT-VC).

Existing video encoders, such as MPEG4, H.263 and H.264, adopt variable length coding (VLC) as entropy coding method, focusing on residue data coding. In low bit-rate video coding, larger quantization parameters are used to give a smaller number of bits spent on residue data. As a result, the header overhead is a dominant factor of yielding the overall bit rates. In this paper, macro-block (MB) header behavior is investigated. It is found that the relative percentage of the number of bits of MB header increases with quantization parameter (QP) and header correlation between neighboring MBs is high. Based on these MB header properties, we propose an advanced coding algorithm for entropy coding of MB header. The experimental results suggest that our proposed algorithm achieves lower total number of encoded bits over JM10.2, up to 10% bit reduction, with the same PSNR quality. At the same bit rates, our algorithm has about 0.3-0.4dB PSNR gain.

Neural-based image and video codecs are significantly more power-efficient when weights and activations are quantized to low-precision integers. While there are general-purpose techniques for reducing quantization effects, large losses can occur when specific entropy coding properties are not considered. This work analyzes how entropy coding is affected by parameter quantizations, and provides a method to minimize losses. It is shown that, by using a certain type of coding parameters to be learned, uniform quantization becomes practically optimal, also simplifying the minimization of code memory requirements. The mathematical properties of the new representation are presented, and its effectiveness is demonstrated by coding experiments, showing that good results can be obtained with precision as low as 4 bits per network output, and practically no loss with 8 bits.
