In this paper, architecture with combination of software and hardware for AVS variable length code decoding is designed. Logical and feasible division between software and hardware for the system is presented. Under control of embedded CPU, the design can decode fixed length code, unsigned or signed k-th Exp-Golomb code and context-based adaptive2D-VLC (CA-2D-VLC) code. Furthermore, decoding flow of software is given in detail, which can output parsing results and command information in required format. A single module named "VLD" is designed in hardware to meet the requirement of being frequent transferred in CA-2D-VLC decoding. Finally, parsing results of the whole syntax elements from AVS bitstream are output on this platform correctly, which has been proved to support real-time decoding for AVS HDTV video. Though designed for AVS video standard originally, it can be adapted to other coding standards easily.

Permutation codes are a class of structured vector quantizers with a computationally-simple encoding procedure. In this paper, we provide an extension that preserves the computational simplicity but yields improved operational rate-distortion performance. The new class of vector quantizers has a codebook comprising several permutation codes as subcodes. Methods for designing good code parameters are given. One method depends on optimizing the rate allocation in a shape-gain vector quantizer with gain-dependent wrapped spherical shape codebook.

This paper proposes a novel grayscale image compression approach using the binary wavelet transform (BWT) and context-based arithmetic coding, namely the context-based binary wavelet transform coding algorithm (CBWTC). In our CBWTC, in order to alleviate the degradation of predictability caused by the BWT and eliminate the correlation within the same level subbands, three highpass wavelet coefficients at the same location are combined to form an octave symbol and then encoded with a ternary arithmetic coder. The conditional context of the CBWTC is properly modeled by exploiting the properties of the BWT as well as taking the advantages of non-causal adaptive context modeling. Experimental results show that the coding performance of the CBWTC is better than that of the state-of-the-art grayscale image coders except for images containing rich texture, and always outperforms the JBIG2 algorithm and other BWT-based binary coding technique.

This paper proposes a novel, fast, highly-parallel and configurable architecture for zigzag scan and optional scans in multiple video coding standards, including H.261, MPEG-1,2,4, H.264/AVC, and AVS. Arbitrary scan patterns could be supported by configuring the ROM data, and the proposed architecture can largely reduce the processing cycles. This makes it possible to integrate the scan unit into the transform pipeline stage, thus mode decision could be more efficient. The scanning process is divided into 2 pipeline stages. By introducing parallelism, phase1 generates all temporary-runs of an 8 times 8 block in 16 cycles. In phase2 the number of cycles used to output the final (run, level) pairs is equal to the total number of the nonzero coefficients in a block. The experimental results show the proposed architecture is able to reduce up to 80% of total scanning cycles on average.

In this paper, we will consider the joint source and channel coding problem and propose a double-level error resilient scheme of joint source and channel coding. Compared to other joint source and channel coding schemes, we insert one coordination structure named error resilient entropy coding between source coding and channel coding to achieve additional error resilient capability. Using arithmetic coding based on forbidden symbol and standard LDPC code, we prove that, in coding redundancy and computational complexity, our scheme outperforms either separate source and channel coding scheme or joint source and channel coding scheme with synchronization words.

This paper proposes a new bit plane coding method for signed integer sequences. This method consists in mapping successive bit planes onto quinary symbols (+, -, 0, 1, EoP), where the symbol ldquoEoPrdquo stands for ldquoEnd of Planerdquo, and applying arithmetic coding. Sign bits are efficiently coded in combination with the corresponding most significant bit of non-zero integers. Moreover, bit planes are scanned and coded in a non-sequential manner to exploit the correlation between successive planes. Results for conversational transform coding of wideband speech and audio signals - sampled at 16 kHz - show that the performance/complexity of the proposed bitplane coder is near equivalent to non-embedded coding (stack-run coding), while offering additional flexibility (bitstream scalability).

This paper proposes a novel residual prediction algorithm to improve the coding efficiency. It extends the scope of prediction to the residual data. The proposed algorithm is adopted for intra prediction which accounts for a major portion of the bit stream. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the bit-rate by up to 4.34% compared with the JM reference software without any degradation of the peak signal to noise ratio. By incorporating basic hybrid video coding techniques into the encoder, the proposed residual prediction algorithm can significantly improve the coding efficiency.

In implementing an efficient block coder for JPEG2000, the memories required for storing the state variables dominate the hardware cost of a block coder. In this paper, we propose a novel bit-plane coder (BPC) architecture that derives all the state variables on the fly, thereby eliminating the memory requirement. In addition, we present a concurrent column-stripe coding algorithm which merges the scanning of all three coding passes into a single context window to generate all relevant context outputs concurrently in a single clock cycle. Experimental results show that the memory requirement and overall hardware cost of the proposed BPC are much smaller than those of previous architectures. Furthermore, as the column-stripe can be encoded for all three passes in a single clock cycle, a minimum of four context outputs are generated per cycle. Therefore, the following arithmetic coder that encodes the BPC outputs can never be in the idle state, enabling fast computation of overall block coding.

The context-based adaptive variable length coder (CAVLC) in H.264/AVC is not appropriate for lossless video coding because it was designed for lossy video coding. Since statistical characteristics of residual data in lossy and lossless coding are quite different, we design a new VLC table for the number of non-zero coefficients and an adaptive scheme for VLC table selection in level coding for lossless intra coding. Experimental results show that the proposed CAVLC scheme provides approximately 10% bit saving, compared to the original CAVLC scheme in H.264/AVC.

Encoding video in scalable formats supports fast and efficient adaptation. Fully scalable video bit-stream requires layered structure of most of its components. However, layered representation requires new entropy coding strategies able to efficiently protecting different layers. In this work, we apply multiplexed codes on a scalable video coding (SVC) scheme with a spatial scalability as well as a temporal scalability. Experimental results reveal a very high error resilience at almost no cost in compression efficiency. Tests indicate that with multiplexed codes, it is possible to ensure auto_synchronisation decoder in the case of corrupt bit-stream, without increasing the bit rate or the complexity of treatment.
