Video halftoning is a key technology for use in the innovative display - electronic paper (e-paper). Since e-paper is power-limited, halftone video compression becomes an emerging issue but is still relatively unexplored. In this paper, this issue is addressed and a novel halftone video compression scheme is proposed. Our scheme is mainly composed of three components: block decomposition, block-based halftone quantization, and source coding. We evaluate the proposed method via lossless halftone video compression comparison with the famous standard, JBIG2. In addition, we demonstrate the rate-distortion performance of the proposed lossy halftone video compression method.

Hybrid variable length coding (HVLC) was recently proposed as a novel entropy coding scheme for block-based image and video compression, which divides each transform block into low frequency (LF) region and high frequency (HF) region and codes them differently. To take advantage of the clustered nature of the nonzero coefficients in the LF region, a two-dimensional position and one-dimensional amplitude coding scheme (2DP1DA) was also proposed, which codes the 2D position information, i.e., run of consecutive zero-valued coefficients and run of consecutive nonzero coefficients, jointly by a 2D code table. To further improve the coding efficiency, joint position and amplitude coding is desirable. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional position and amplitude coding scheme (3DPA) to jointly code the position and amplitude information for each nonzero cluster by a 3D code table. The experimental results show that HVLC with 3DPA for coding LF region achieves about 3.2%~3.7% bit rate reduction for a wide range of quantization parameters (QP) compared with CAVLC in H.264. Moreover, the 3DPA scheme is a compact way to realize the joint position and amplitude coding and it is very suitable for context-adaptive HVLC design.

3-D video will become one of the most important video technologies in the next generation of television. Due to ultra high data bandwidth requirement for 3-D video, effective compression technology becomes an essential part in the infrastructure. Thus stereo and multiview video coding (MVC) plays a critical role. However, MVC systems require much more computational complexity relative to mono-view video coding systems. Therefore, an efficient prediction scheme is necessary for encoding. In this paper, a new fast motion estimation (ME) algorithm is proposed. By utilizing disparity estimation (DE) to find corresponding blocks between different views, the coding information such as motion vectors can be effectively shared and reused from the coded view channel. Therefore, the computation for ME in most view channels can be greatly reduced. Experimental results show that compared with the full search block matching algorithm applied to both ME and DE, the proposed algorithm saves 95% computation with near-FSBMA quality.

In this paper, a bit-rate estimation method is proposed, which could improve the performance of the H.264 encoder and avoid the strict data-dependencies of mode decision. After that, an efficient parallel algorithm for H.264 encoder with CABAC entropy coding is presented based on the Macro-Block Region Partition (MBRP) parallel method and the bit-rate estimation technique. Simulation results show that, the proposed parallel algorithm could improve the performance of H.264 encoder efficiently while maintaining the similar RD performance as JM 10.2.

In this paper, we propose an effective sequential lossless compression scheme which performs sequentially pixel by pixel in raster-scan order, also so called one-pass scheme as opposed to multiple-pass scheme. The proposed method has two major components: fuzzy neural network predictor and context based adaptive arithmetic coder. The proposed predictor which is based on T-S fuzzy neural network system effectively exploits structural redundancies between mosaic-like color components, and its residuals are well-modeled by a two-side geometry distribution centered at zero. An advantage of the proposed compression method is the clean separation between prediction and entropy coding of prediction errors. Any entropy coder, be it Huffman or arithmetic, static or adaptive, binary or m-ary, can be easily interfaced with our predictor. Consequently, we can encode mosaic images at low complexity level. Compared with existing methods of lossless compression for Bayer raw data, the performance of proposed method is apparently the best.

It is known that for sources that output symbols according to Poisson process the loss probability coincides with the utilization factor of the channel for any code on the realtime basis. It is also known for continuous-time Markov chains they take the same value for any code. This coincidence means that minimizing loss probability gives us the maximum spare time to transmit another information. That is, we can enjoy two merits by optimizing one parameter. In this paper, we specify the source class where we have such a benefit. Concretely, as a super class including Poisson processes and continuous-time Markov chains, we define a class of sources that traverse a finite state space with arbitrary random stay time. For this source class, we show that the necessary and sufficient condition for the coincidence of values between the loss probability and the utilization factor is that for each state the stay time obeys an exponential distribution. Assuming that the stay time obeys an exponential distribution, we derive the minimum loss probability. Moreover, we derive the minimum loss probability in the case that a single code is common in all states.

With the ubiquitous application of Internet and wireless networks, H.264 video communication becomes more and more popular. However, due to the high-efficiently predictive coding and the variable length entropy coding, it is more sensitive to transmission errors. Error concealment (EC) is just an approach to utilize the spatial and temporal correlations to conceal the corrupted region. In this paper, first we propose variable block size error concealment (VBSEC) scheme inspired by variable block size motion estimation (VBSME) in H.264. This scheme provides four EC modes and four sub-block partitions. The whole corrupted macro-block (MB) will be divided into variable block size adoptively according to the actual motion. More precise motion vectors (MV) will be predicted for each sub-block Then MV refinement (MVR) scheme is proposed to refine the MV of the heterogeneous sub-block by utilizing three step search (TSS) algorithm adaptively. Both VBSEC and MVR are based on our improved spatio-temporal boundary matching algorithm (STBMA). By utilizing these schemes, we can reconstruct the corrupted MB in the inter frame more accurately. The experimental results show that our proposed scheme can obtain maximum PSNR gain up to 1.82dB and 1.52dB, respectively compared with the boundary matching algorithm (BMA) adopted in the JM11.0 reference software and STBMA.

This paper describes our techniques to design the intra-prediction of AVS encoder for HDTV applications. The whole design is optimized in both the algorithm and architecture levels. On the algorithm level, since the Plane mode is the most area-costly one, it is temporarily ignored. And SATD is lastly chosen as mode decision to balance the hardware implementation with performance of Rate and Distortion. On the architecture level, in addition to five-parallel system, a new scheduling of encoding process is arranged to avoid the idle cycles together by ping-pong memory architecture between the intra-prediction and entropy coding. As a result, the proposed architecture can be implemented by 11750 Slices, achieves real-time processing of HD(1920×1088) frames at a rate of 30 jps in 100 MHz operation frequency.

CABAC is the entropy coding method adopted in H.264/AVC main profile. The combination of CABAC and RDO can represent an improvement in bit rate of around 20%. However, the computation complexity of video encoding increases drastically. To improve the coding performance, this paper proposes a transform-domain bit-rate estimation method for CABAC, which estimates the bit-rate of coding blocks based on the quantized transform coefficients and motion vector differences. Based on the bit-rate estimation method, a fast mode decision algorithm is presented, in which the estimated bit-rate values instead of the actual ones after entropy coding are adopted to calculate the Language cost in RDO mode decision and the entropy coding is performed only on the optimal mode. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm saves about 33% of total encoding time while the losses of PSNR and bit-rate are negligible.

In this paper, we propose an entropy coding method to further compress quantized mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) extracted for distributed speech recognition (DSR). In the ETSI extended DSR standard, MFCCs are compressed with additional parameters such as pitch and voicing class. It is observed that the distribution of MFCCs varies according to the voicing class, thereby enabling the design of different Huffman trees for MFCCs according to voicing class. Based on this observation, we could further reduce the bit-rates of compressed MFCCs compared to the Huffman coding method that does not consider voicing class. Subsequent experiments show that the bit-rate of the proposed method is 34.18 bits per frame, which is 1.84 bits/frame lower than that of the Huffman coding method without voicing.
