entropy coding is fundamental for reducing the coding redundancy in image compression. However, existing entropy models for learned image compression are restricted by independent or autoregressive modeling based on presumed distribution generated from the family of Gaussian functions. In this paper, we propose a novel tensor network-based entropy model that can explicitly infer the joint distribution of image representation for learned image compression. We utilize a tree tensor network (TTN) to enable exact computation for probabilities of image representation. Specifically, we produce efficient tensor representation for entropy modeling based on bit planes slicing with gray code. Furthermore, we leverage tensor contraction to accurately calculate the partition function and jointly predict the entire bit plane for entropy coding. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first to directly infer the joint distribution of image representation in learned image compression without any presumed condition. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is competitive with the state-of-the-art in both lossless and lossy image compression.

In many modem video encoders, motion estimation is usually formulated as a Lagrangian cost function that balances motion prediction accuracy and the rate to transmit motion vectors. In H.264/AVC video encoders, including the H.264 reference software, in an effort to reduce computational complexity, the motion vector rate is often estimated using a look-up table based on universal variable length coding regardless of the entropy coding method used. However, the estimated rate could be different from the actual rate used for encoding. In this paper we present an empirical study on the motion vector rate estimation mismatch caused by different entropy coding assumptions and discuss its impact on motion estimation and coding efficiency. We also present a more accurate motion vector rate estimation method for encoding with the context adaptive arithmetic coding (CABAC) method while still maintaining low computational complexity. The proposed motion vector rate estimation can provide up to 2.26% in rate savings for low bit rate applications when all modes are considered for the encoding. Results for single mode encoding, which can be useful for fast encoding applications, show that we can achieve benefits of up to 27.15% and 7.39% in rate savings for low and medium to high bit rate applications respectively.

In this paper, we improve on our previous work regarding component-based image coding, a hybrid transform-based/perceptual image coding scheme based on a decomposition of the image into structure and texture characterized by a Gaussian Markov random field. The 2D Itakura distance allows us to evaluate the performance of our texture model in terms of rate vs. distortion. A minimal quantization step size for near-lossless coding of model parameters is determined. Furthermore, we show that texture contrast can be efficiently coded using transform-based techniques.

In this paper, we describe split field coding, an approach for low complexity, error-resilient entropy coding which splits code words into two fields: a variable length prefix and a fixed length suffix. Once a prefix has been decoded correctly, then the associated fixed length suffix is error-resilient, with bit errors causing no loss of code word synchronization and only a limited amount of distortion on the decoded value. When the fixed length suffixes are segregated to a separate block, this approach becomes suitable for use with a variety of methods which provide varying protection to different portions of the bitstream, such as unequal error protection or progressive ordering schemes. Split field coding is demonstrated in the context of a wavelet-based image codec, with examples of various error resilience properties, and comparisons to the rate-distortion and computational performance of JPEG 2000.

entropy coding becomes a performance bottle neck in video codecs because it requires a large amount of bitwise computation. Many video systems accelerate the coding process by implementing it as a hardwired accelerator or by executing it on an extra general-purpose processor to meet performance requirement. However, the variety of video formats causes a high degree of complication to a hardwired accelerator, which increases implementation cost and complexity. When an extra processor is used for the coding process, the property of using variable-length operands in the coding process significantly causes computation inefficiency. This paper presents a novel processor architecture which provides an instruction set suitable for efficient execution of entropy coding process as well as supports for multiple video formats.

Lossless video compression algorithms are used in applications ranging from archival of video records to the field of medicine. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective encoding technique for lossless video compression. Our technique automatically learns Bayesian Networks to discover Conditional Dependencies in a video stream through Stochastic Hill Climbing. Utilizing this network, variable length codes are generated using entropy coding procedure achieved by Huffman coding. This structured data is used to encode the video stream. The algorithm has been tested and compared alongside H.264, FF Video Codec 1 (FFVI) and Gzip. The proposed compression model performs on average at least as good and at times better than the aforementioned techniques.

This paper considers the correlated data routing problem in a wireless sensor network (WSN) and proposes an entropy coding based hybrid routing algorithm to solve the problem. The proposed hybrid routing algorithm takes into account both the correlation structure of the data between different sensor nodes and the path-cost of a node, and combines an entropy coding based routing algorithm and the shortest-path-tree (SPT) routing algorithm. Specifically, for a node that is away from the sink, it employs the entropy coding based algorithm to determine the next-hop node, while for a node close to the sink it employs the SPT routing algorithm to determine the next-hop node. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid routing algorithm can significantly improve the overall transmission cost and the total amount of data transmitted in the network as compared with the SPT routing algorithm.

The emerging Versatile Video coding (VVC) standard introduces several intra prediction modes and intra mode coding techniques. Most Probable Mode (MPM) is derived to enable efficient signaling for the selected intra mode. We propose the modification of intra mode coding for the MPM index. The first bin of mpm_idx is adaptively coded by regular coding engine or bypass engine according to neighboring infra modes. Two versions of the VVC Test Model (VTM) 2.0 and VTM4.0 were used to verify the proposed method with different numbers of MPM. Experimental results in 3-MPMs show 0.10%, 0.11%, 0.12% BD-rate savings for Y, U, and V components, respectively, for All Infra (AI) configuration. And the other results in 6-MPM show 0.05%, 0.08%, 0.07% BD-rate gains. No noticeable changes in runtimes of both encoder and decoder are observed.

Classical context modeling and binarization algorithms on multimedia do not fully exploit their spatial correlations under the sequential assumption. This paper proposes a novel entropy coding scheme incorporating regional context modeling (RCM) and dynamic Huffman binarization (DHB) for multimedia. RCM evaluates the context order with the line distance in Cartesian coordinate system, so that the 2-D spatial correlations can be directly exploited. RCM predicts each symbol with the weighted estimation based on the line distance and appearing frequency of its context, which coincides with the principle for context-based prediction. On the other hand, DHB is proposed to adaptively assign the length of bins based on the estimated probability of symbols for coding. For optimal prediction and coding, frequent symbols are assigned with short bins to constrain the propagation of code redundancy. Applied into multimedia coding, extensive experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves better coding performance than the benchmark coders.

High performance lossless data compression is an emerged technology that enhances fast and effective data processing such as for communication and for storage applications. The recent devices generate continuous data flow at high rate, that is very fast stream data. Therefore, an elegant hardware-based compression technology is demanded. This paper proposes a lossless data compression called ASE coding. It encodes stream data by applying entropy coding approach. The encoding mechanism works as a lossless data compression. ASE coding instantly assigns the fewest bits to the corresponding compressed data according to the number of occupied entries in a look-up table. This paper shows the performance evaluations to promise ASE coding adaptively shrinks stream data and works on small hardware resources without stalling or buffering.
