Typical VLC schemes use fixed Huffman tables, thus the coding efficiency is far from the real Huffman coder. By employing multiple fixed code tables, the performance should be increased and approach the ideal Huffman coder. Since the fixed table VLC method is not the "minimum redundant" one, there is a believe that the redundancy between symbols still exists and there should be methods which could further remove it, and the possible way is encoding concatenation of codewords together, i.e., applying a post-processing on the VLC code streams. Some models are given to describe how much equivalent redundancy exist within the VLC code streams by using the channel coding concepts. Starting from those models, we introduce some modifications to evaluate the inter symbol redundancy for source coding. The estimation based on the models for the redundancies of H.263 and AVS are shown, which may lead us to understand the post-processing efficiency could achieve.

We investigate the application of distributed source coding to a single-channel speech or audio signal. We compare two methods. In the first, we encode signal sequences using low-density parity check codes in an approach that resembles methods used in video coding. In the second, we encode each sample with only a set of least significant bits (LSB) of the quantization index. In both methods the parameters of a statistical signal model are estimated at the encoder and transmitted to the decoder. The signal model is used only at the decoder. Our results indicate that the LSB coding method is more effective. We show that the order-k entropy of a sequence of LSBs converges more quickly to the entropy rate of the scalar quantized signal than the order-k entropy of the quantized signal itself. As a result, we can approach the rate-distortion bound by applying entropy coding to successive short (several samples) segments of the sequence of LSB sample. The LSB coding method can be extended to lattice quantization.

In this paper we propose applying an adaptive context tree weighting method with a forbidden symbol in the H.264 coder. Arithmetic codes with a forbidden symbol and a trellis search techniques are employed on an order to estimate the best transmitted codeword. Instead of using the context modeling defined in the H.264 standard, the arithmetic code with a forbidden symbol uses a CTW method. The CABAC algorithm is replaced by GRASP algorithm and the experimental results show that coding gains similar or superior to those obtained with the H.264/AVC CABAC algorithm and arithmetic coding

In this paper, a cost-effective architecture of variable length decoder (VLD) for MPEG-2 and AVS (Advanced Audio Video coding Standard established in China, Part two, Ji Zhun Profile) is proposed. Inverse scan (IScan) and inverse quantisation (IQ) are also merged into this design for cost-effective implementation. A novel group-based architecture with efficient symbol generation scheme is presented for MPEG-2 and a new memory-efficient architecture with mixed memory organization is presented for AVS. Furthermore, we analyze the algorithms of the two standards and propose a merged IQ scheme and a merged RAMs scheme. The proposed design consumes about 13.5K gates at a clock constrain of 166 MHz with 0.18μm CMOS technology. The simulation results show that it can achieve real-time decoding, such as HD1O8Oi(1920x1088@30 MHz) format video of AVS and MPEG-2.

We discover significant value-dependent programming energy variations in multi-level cell (MLC) flash memories, and introduce an energy-aware data compression method that minimizes the flash programming energy rather than the size of the compressed data. We express energy-aware data compression as an entropy coding with unequal bit-pattern costs. Deploying a probabilistic approach, we derive the energy-optimal bit-pattern probabilities and the expected values of the bit-pattern costs for the large amounts of compressed data which are typical in multimedia applications. Then we develop an energy-optimal prefix coding that uses integer linear programming, and construct a prefix code table. From a consideration of Pareto-optimal energy consumption, we make tradeoffs between data size and programming energy, such as a 35% energy saving for a 50% area overhead.

Most video coding standards broadly used in the world such as MPEG series and H.26x are established based on rate-distortion theory. The spatial, temporal and statistic redundancies are reduced by using transform, prediction and entropy coding technologies. However, another important factor, which is named as perceptual redundancy, is ignored or not much developed in recent video coding technologies. In this paper, the authors research the human visual model and propose a perceptual coding method aiming at reducing the energy of luma residual coefficients in pixel domain. Our experiment results prove that this perceptual coding method can reduce the output bitrate of H.264 by 10%-34% without losing the subjective quality of video stream.

Context adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) is a highly efficient entropy coding way, but its coding speed is restricted by high computational complexity, which becomes a major bottleneck in its application. Based on the analysis of the CABAC algorithm and its computational complexity, by improving the probability estimation update part, an effective way to improve its coding speed will be proposed in this paper. The experimental results show that the coding speed of CABAC has been substantially raised meanwhile coding efficiency decline a little.

As the newest video coding standard, H.264/AVC can achieve high compression efficiency. At the same time, due to the high-efficiently predictive coding and the variable length entropy coding, it is more sensitive to transmission errors. So error concealment (EC) in H.264 is very important when compressed video sequences are transmitted over error-prone networks and erroneously received. To achieve higher EC performance, this paper proposes variable block size error concealment scheme (VBSEC) by utilizing the new concept of variable block size motion estimation (VBSME) in H.264 standard. This scheme provides four EC modes and four sub-block partitions. The whole corrupted macro-block (MB) will be divided into variable block size adaptively according to the actual motion. More precise motion vectors (MV) will be predicted for each sub-block. We also produce a more accurate distortion function based on spatio-temporal boundary matching algorithm (STBMA). By utilizing VBSEC scheme based on our STBMA distortion function, we can reconstruct the corrupted MB in the inter frame more accurately. The experimental results show that our proposed scheme can obtain maximum PSNR gain up to 1.72 dB and 0.48 dB, respectively compared with the boundary matching algorithm (BMA) adopted in the JM11.0 reference software and STBMA.

Fidelity scalability involves the refinement of residual texture information. The entropy coding of texture refinement information in the scalable video coding (SVC) extension of H.264/AVC relies on a simple statistical model that is tuned to an encoder-specific way of quantization for generating a single fidelity enhancement layer on top of the backward compatible base layer. For fidelity enhancement layers above the first layer, we demonstrate how and why the current model fails to properly reflect the statistics of texture refinement information. By analyzing the specific properties of the typical quantization process in fidelity scalable coding of SVC, we are able to derive a generic modeling approach for coding of refinement symbols, independent of the specific choice of dead-zone parameters and classification rules. Experimental results for a broad range of quantization parameters show averaged bit-rate savings of around 5% (relative to the total bit rate) by using our proposed context modeling approach for a representative set of video sequences in a test scenario including up to three fidelity enhancement layers.

State-of-the-art in digital coding/decoding includes discrete image transformation, quantization, and entropy coding. The key to efficient data compression is associated with image transformation/reconstruction processes. In this paper, we present a different filters wavelet-based intra-frame video coding technique. The wavelet transformation is developed and optimized in order to enhance the visual quality especially at very low bit rate. The proposed coding technique reduces the bit rate while performing well regarding PSNR and visual quality. In comparison with the conventional coding methods, our proposed coding technique provides significant performance gains in objective and subjective quality.
