This paper presents a new context modeling technique for arithmetic coding of DCT coefficients in video compression. A key feature of the new technique is the inclusion of all previously coded coefficient magnitudes in a DCT block in context modeling. This enables adaptive arithmetic coding to exploit the redundancy of the high-order Markov process in the DCT domain with a few conditioning states. In addition, a context weighting technique is used to further improve the coding efficiency. The complexity of the new arithmetic coding scheme is slightly lower than that of context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) of H.264. Moreover, the scheme is made compatible to the AVS baseline profile. It achieves on average 13% improvement in compression ratio over context-based two dimension variable length coding (C2DVLC) designed for the DCT domain, and a similar coding efficiency as the CABAC technique in H.264.

We present a simple lossless audio codec, composed of an integer-reversible modulated lapped transform (MLT) followed by a backward-adaptive run-length/Golomb-Rice (RLGR) encoder. Its compression performance matches those of state-of-the-art predictive codecs, and it has the advantage that its compressed bitstream contains frequency-domain data that can be used for applications such as search, identification, and visualization. Its compression gain can be improved through a novel data model based on cross-block smoothed spectral magnitude estimates. Its bitstream can be transcoded into a lossy format, for transfers to portable players, at about twice the speed of other codecs. The codec also supports a near-lossless mode, which allows for an extra factor of two in compression without noticeable distortions

A novel architecture of ML-decomposed binary arithmetic coder is proposed. Through the analysis of previous designs, the traditional processing unit is divided into two parts, MPS encoder and LPS encoder. With different arrangements of these two basic components, we develop two types of ML-decomposed structures. To increase the throughput of arithmetic coding, ML cascade architecture puts the coders in serial, while throughput-selection architecture offers several choices in parallel. Their design methodologies are described in this paper. Both methods achieve very high throughput, more than 800 M symbols/sec. And they are configurable and extensible to supply a wide range of specifications. Moreover, the proposed architecture can be used in binary arithmetic coding of various video and image standards.

In this paper we present a new lossless audio coder using the Burrows-Wheeler transform (BWT). Audio signals under consideration, which are assumed to be of integer values, are first permuted using the BWT to get the transform coefficients; and then the resulting coefficients are compressed using a combination of the move-to-front coding (MTF) and an entropy coder. Both Arithmetic and Huffman coding have been used for entropy coding. Simulations show that the proposed coder outperforms other lossless coders, namely, the integer discrete cosine transform (intDCT) and the integer wavelet transform (intWT).

In this paper, we propose a lossless video coding system with temporal scalability support for preview purpose. The backbone of the compression consists of an adaptive MCTF scheme and a spatial lossless predictive coding scheme. The former aims at both inter-frame coding and temporal scalability while the latter focuses on lossless coding of temporal prediction residuals in the spatial domain. Unlike the conventional MCTF scheme, the proposed one can dynamically select either inter-frame or intra-frame predictions subject to the property of the frame image. The inter-prediction is further divided into three modes, i.e. forward, backward and bidirectional to reduce side information of motion vectors. The prediction mode is determined on a block basis and can thus effectively explore data redundancy temporally or spatially subject to the variations in blocks. The adopted lossless spatial prediction scheme is basically based on JPEG-LS followed by arithmetic coding. Experimental results indicate that our system can outperform rival systems based on JPEG-2000, JPEG-LS and H.264.

Natural images often consist of many different regions in intensity variation feature. The block adaptive predictors in lossless image coding often show considerably different entropies of block prediction errors between the horizontal scanning and the vertical one, block by block. This paper proposes a block adaptive prediction approach, in which the least-square-based predictors are designed for both horizontal scanning and vertical scanning for each block. Then the sums of the absolute prediction errors for both scanning directions are compared, and the scanning giving lower sum is selected for its block. In the error image, variances of errors for each block are often spread in some wide range. Therefore, in entropy coding stage, each block is classified into several classes by its error variance and the range coders are utilized, class by class, giving lower entropies than that of no classifying.

JPEG optimization strives to maximize the best rate distortion performance while remaining faithful to the JPEG syntax. Given an image, if soft decision quantization (SDQ) is applied to its DCT coefficients, then Huffman table, quantization step sizes and SDQ coefficients are three free parameters over which a JPEG encoder can optimize. In this paper, we first propose a novel algorithm to find the optimal SDQ coefficient indices in the form of run-size pairs among all possible candidates given that the other two parameters are fixed. Based on this algorithm, we then formulate an iterative algorithm to jointly optimize the run-length coding, Huffman coding and quantization step sizes. The proposed iterative algorithm achieves a compression performance better than any previously known JPEG compression results and even exceeds the quoted PSNR results of some state-of-the-art wavelet-based image coders like Shapiro's embedded zerotree wavelet algorithm at the common bit rates under comparison.

The conventional run-level variable length coding (RL-VLC), commonly adopted in block-based image and video compression to code quantized transform coefficients, is not efficient in coding consecutive nonzero coefficients. To overcome the deficiency, hybrid variable length coding (HVLC) is proposed in this paper. HVLC takes advantage of the clustered nature of nonzero transform coefficients in the low-frequency (LF) region and the scattered nature of nonzero transform coefficients in the high-frequency (HF) region by employing two types of VLC schemes. A novel two-dimensional position and one-dimensional amplitude coding scheme is proposed to code the LF coefficients while RL-VLC or an equivalent VLC scheme is retained to code the HF coefficients. Experimental results show that HVLC greatly favors the coding of high-resolution, high-complexity scenes, while it preserves low computational complexity.

The hexagon-based search pattern (HEXBS) algorithm yields fewer search points required for motion estimation, compared to square-shaped and diamond-shape patterns. In this paper, we propose a fast motion estimation algorithm to further reduce the search points demanded by HEXBS algorithm. After exploiting the statistical property of motion vectors of the neighboring blocks, the number of selected candidate points on the hexagon endpoints will be lower than the original HEXBS algorithm. Thus, the motion estimation efficiency can be improved in such a way. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm decreases 57.62% average search points, compared to HEXBS algorithm, with only slight quality degradation.

MQ arithmetic coder has been adopted to achieve entropy coding in the latest image compression standard JPEG2000. which is a bit-level operation with intensive branch and feedback thus becomes a serious bottleneck of high speed JPEG2000. In this paper, an efficient fast algorithm for MQ coder was proposed, in which the renormalization process with BYTEOUT was performed in batch fashion instead of gradual iteration as introduced in JPEG2000. Experimental results have proved the validity of this method in decreasing computation complexity.
