MQ arithmetic coder has been adopted to achieve entropy coding in the latest image compression standard JPEG2000. which is a bit-level operation with intensive branch and feedback thus becomes a serious bottleneck of high speed JPEG2000. In this paper, an efficient fast algorithm for MQ coder was proposed, in which the renormalization process with BYTEOUT was performed in batch fashion instead of gradual iteration as introduced in JPEG2000. Experimental results have proved the validity of this method in decreasing computation complexity.

Scalable video coding is the state-of-art video coding stan- dard for the future streaming applications over heterogeneous networks. Although SVC is based on H.264/AVC, some new coding tools increase the its difficulty in encoder hardware design, especially in memory issues. In this paper, hierar- chical B-frame structure and fine granularity scalability are introduced and their memory bandwidth overhead are ana- lyzed. Two method, adaptive spatial-temporal hierarchical ME and scan bucket algorithm are proposed to reduced band- width overhead 55% and 88%, respectively, while these al- gorithms have almost no quality degradation. The concept of proposed encoder framework can be further applied in high definition SVC encoder designs.

In this paper, we present a scalable entropy-constrained vector quantizer based on Gaussian mixture models (GMMs), lattice quantization, and arithmetic coding. We assume that the source has a probability density function of a GMM. The scheme is based on a mixture component classifier, the Karhunen Loeve transform of the component, followed by a lattice quantization. The scalar elements of the quantized vector are entropy coded using a specially designed arithmetic coder. The proposed scheme has a computational complexity that is independent of rate, and quadratic with respect to vector dimension. The design is flexible and allows for adjusting the desired target rate on-the-fly. We evaluated the performance of the proposed scheme on speech-derived source vectors. It was demonstrated that the proposed scheme outperforms a fixed-rate GMM based vector quantizer, and performs closely to the theoretical optimum.

A theory is proposed for how to design minimum mean square error (MSE) filter banks for lossy source coding when uniform quantizers and ideal entropy coding are used to compress the subband signals. A signal-dependent correlation model is used to find the auto and cross correlation between the additive quantization noise within the same subband and across different subbands. This theory also shows how to find the cross correlation between the original time-series and the additive quantization noise. The simulation results show that the proposed way of designing the filter banks outperforms the minimum MSE performance results found by using the classical signal independent high-rate quantization noise model.

In the paper we propose a new lossless video coding system utilizing both Motion Compensated Temporal Filtering (MCTF) and integer wavelet transform techniques to explore data redundancy in both spatial and temporal domain, respectively. We elaborate the design issues such MCTF scheme, filter selection, group of picture size, wavelet coefficient coding, and develop an efficient coding system. Simulation results show that the proposed system using 1/3 filter has the best coding performance. The bit rate saving is over 20% compared with lossless still image coder such as JPEG-LS. The saving is also around 10% when compared with other wavelet based lossless video coder.

This paper presents a high throughput hardware architecture for forward transforms module of H.264/AVC video coding standard. The designed architecture can reach 303MHz, when mapped to a Xilinx Virtex II Pro FPGA, and it is able to process 4.9 billion of samples per second. This throughput allows the use of the designed architecture in H.264/AVC codecs targeting real time when processing high resolution videos. This high throughput is very important to reduce the intra-prediction coding time, as will be explained in this paper. This architecture is able to process 1,561 HDTV 1080p frames per second. Comparing this design with published works was possible to conclude that this solution presents the best throughput among all other solutions.

Maxted et al. in 1985 gave a conjecture stating that, for a Geometric source, the stable code has the best error recovery performance for the case of bit inversion among all Huffman codes for this source, while the unstable code has the worst error recovery performance. This conjecture was extended by Swaszek et al. ten years later, but without proof, to sources with certain probability mass function. In this paper, we prove the correctness of the extended version of this conjecture. Our proof provides a novel mathematical technique for proving the optimality of variable length code in the sense of error recovery capability. Furthermore, our result offers some insight into the working mechanism of the suffix condition that has been widely used by many heuristic algorithms to find error-resilient codes.

This paper introduces a family of integer-to-integer approximations to the Cartesian-to-polar coordinate transformation and analyzes its application to lossy compression. A high-rate analysis is provided for an encoder that first uniformly scalar quantizes, then transforms to "integer polar coordinates," and finally separately entropy codes angle and radius. For sources separable in polar coordinates, the performance (at high rate) is shown to match that of entropy-constrained unconstrained polar quantization - where the angular quantization is allowed to depend on the radius. Thus, for sources separable in polar coordinates but not separable in rectangular coordinates - including certain Gaussian scale mixtures - the proposed system performs better than any transform code. Furthermore, unlike unconstrained polar quantization, integer polar coordinates are appropriate for lossless compression of integer-valued vectors. Combination of integer polar coordinates with integer-to-integer transform coding is also discussed.

The basic building blocks of most state-of the art source coders are: a linear transformation; scalar quantization of the transform coefficients; probability modeling of the sequence of quantization indices; an entropy coding stage. The weakness of conventional separated source-channel coding approaches lies in the catastrophic behavior of the entropy coding stage. Hence, we replace this stage with linear coding, that maps directly the sequence of redundant quantizer output symbols into a channel codeword. We show that this approach does not entail any loss of optimality in the asymptotic regime of large block length. Furthermore, for practical block lengths and moderate complexity, our approach yields very significant improvements. We develop a full implementation example based on the JPEG2000 image coder and punctured turbo codes. The gain over a conventional separated scheme is demonstrated by extensive numerical experiments on test images.

In this paper, we propose a high speed CAVLC (Context-based Adaptive Variable Length coding) decoder for H.264/AVC. The previous hardware architectures perform five steps in series to obtain the syntax elements to restore the residual and the codeword length to get next input bitstream (we call it 'valid bits'). Since several cycles are required for the process of getting the valid bits and it has to be iterated several times during CAVLC process, the decoding time is increased. This paper proposes two techniques to reduce the computational cycles for valid bits. One is an improved reduced decoding step from five to four by combining total_coeff step and trailing_ones step into one step. The other is to get the valid bits directly by shifting additional shifter register instead of using controller and accumulator. By adopting these two techniques, the required processing time was reduced by 26% compared with previous architectures. It was designed in a hardware description language and total logic gate count was 14.2k using 0.18um standard cell library.
