This paper presents a compression scheme for color images, by using Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) algorithm, which is a neural network structure. In this application 1-dimensional SOFM is used to map 256-color to 64-, 32- and 16-color. After the quantization process, relative coding and entropy coding are performed without any loss in the information. Obtained results encourage the use of SOFM for image compression.

In this paper, we present a comparative study of different lossless audio coding schemes, which are implemented using different integer transforms. The audio signal under consideration, which is assumed to be integer-valued, as in the case of fixed-point implementation, is first decorrelated using the appropriate integer transform. The resulting integer coefficients are then entropy-coded to produce the output stream. Several integer transforms have been considered, such as the integer wavelet transform (IntWT) with different decomposition levels as well as different filters, the integer discrete cosine transform (IntDCT), and the integer Walsh Hadamard transform (IntWHT). Arithmetic and Huffman coding have been used for entropy coding. The performed simulation provides insight on the performance of the different integer transforms in the lossless audio coding context

This paper presents the study of how to accelerate CABAC encoding for emerging heterogeneous multimedia applications. The latest image and video compression standards such as JPEG2000 and H.264 both have adopted context adaptive binary arithmetic coding to achieve performance enhancement. However, CABAC requires high computing power. After investigating computational complexity of CABAC coding, firstly, instruction level acceleration is elaborated. Secondly, a configurable accelerator for CABAC encoding in multiple standards is proposed. Benchmarking performance and implementation cost is also addressed.

This paper provides a scheme for MFEG-2 to H.264 transcoding. This scheme is composed of two parts: intra prediction and inter prediction. For the intra prediction part, 8 times 8 block DCT-HT transform-domain converse is used, and then intra mode decision is done in HT domain to obtain the optimum mode, so that good intra prediction is acquired. For the inter prediction part, motion vector (MV) got from variable length decoding (VLD) in MPEG-2 stream is reused as prediction motion vector (PMV) of H.264, then motion prediction mode and search region are reset, so that better prediction result is acquired. In this paper we propose a rate-distortion optimized motion estimation algorithm that is built upon a quadtree structure. Each node of the quadtree represents a block in the current frame together with its motion vector, and the block size decreases from the root to the leaves. In the first step, the quadtree is pruned according to a rate-distortion criterion in order to obtain blocks of variable sizes. A further rate rebate can be achieved by merging those leaf nodes of the quadtree that can be efficiently represented by the same motion vector. In this paper, we propose a method to analyse the error recovery properties of quasi-arithmetic codes. This method is adapted from the one proposed in J. Maxted and J. Robinson (1985) for variable length codes. The expected number of symbols affected by a single bit error and the probability mass function of the gain/loss (P.F. Swaszek and P. DiCicco, 1995) of symbols following a single bit error can be computed with this method. A method to estimate this probability mass function when a bitstream is sent over a binary symmetrical channel is then proposed. The aggregated state model for soft decoding of variable length codes proposed in H. Jegou et al. (2005) is then extended to quasi-arithmetic codes, as the synchronisation recovery properties of both kind of codes are similar. The soft decoding results of this scheme reveal high performance with a reasonable computing cost

VSIP has special instructions and co-processors for computation intensive parts in video signal processing, such as inter prediction, entropy coding, de-blocking filter, etc. The proposed VSIP has been thoroughly verified using an FPGA board having the Xilinxtrade Virtex II. Tarp filtering, an image coder with a simple implementation, is coupled with a block-based discrete cosine transform equipped with pre- and postfiltering. The prefilter reduces intra-block and inter-block correlation of the block-based coefficients, resulting in coefficients that are less correlated and thereby more suitable to tarp filtering. Experimental results show that the proposed coder achieves a significant improvement in rate-distortion performance as compared to the corresponding tarp coder in its original wavelet-based formulation for images with highly detailed content. A similar gain over JPEG2000 is seen for these same images, while, for images that are mostly smooth, the proposed coder performs comparably to JPEG2000
